Title: Mandello Anniversary stuff..(then the trip)
Post by: Huzo on June 25, 2022, 02:10:52 AM
The prospect of leaving soon for Mandello is starting to feel very real..
My Norge is now safely tucked away in the warehouse in London on the trickle charger and I’m getting regular updates on how things are going.
My friend Francois who lives in Paris, has blocked out one week and I will be meeting up with him at his apartment on the morning of the 7th, it is later than first planned but we will travel directly from Paris to Mandello and meet up with the people who have offered us our accomodation.
Who knows who I might bump into from the WG community..?
Also I went for the final fitting of my jacket today and it looks like this..
(https://i.ibb.co/2PSv7gn/2-F1-FEB8-C-4-A11-4-F84-9-F5-D-C52-A20123-EAF.jpg) (https://ibb.co/2PSv7gn)

The script is not straight as you can see, but it has not been stitched yet and clearly the collar needs doing and some other bits, but it’s getting there.
When I get to Mandello, I will throw the jacket into Lake Como and complete a lap in the warm air to dry it..
That will serve as a christening of sorts.

So many nooks along the shore to dunk.
You could find a priest to say a few words at the christening.
Throw some water on the Norge too.  You already did that, didn't you.

Great idea dunking the jacket in the lake.  Can never be cleaned again.

Being dunked in Lake Como will stay with the jacket no matter what else happens to it. I expect it will be a good jacket for a long time. :thumb:

Wow!  That is a beautiful jacket!  And, YES a dunking in Lago di Como is appropriate!  Enjoy your trip...

All the Strayans I've met seem about as clean as regular people......

I seriously doubt that Huzo throwing his jacket in the lake would lead to any significant increase in the contamination of the lake.

The change in water chemistry/pollution levels probably wouldn't even be measurable........

You should still insist on at least half an apology......

It's high time people realized that feelings are everywhere.....

Yes.  AFTER dunking the jacket in the lake, he must never clean the magic out of it.

You will be easy to spot! A fellow from my town is going as well, he is renting a Guzzi from the same dealer in Rome and will be traveling with me for at least part of the trip. I met a couple riding rental bikes out of Barcelona, will be looking to meet up with them as well in Mandello.
I am heading to Alaska on July 24th for a couple weeks, then get back to recharge for a couple weeks before Italy on September 2nd.
Really looking forward to meeting up over a glass of fine Italian red wine

Cheers

You may have seen that I cannot now arrive until the 8 th.
The guy I’m meeting in Paris cannot get away until then, but we will waste no time in getting there.

Hmmm…..Might be a bit of a setback
Those leather scripts I had laser cut are too small for the machinist to sew. There is a leather glue, but he doesn’t have a lot of faith in it.
There’s an alternative that I might need to pursue.
In any case, I rang him today and asked if he could please get the bugger finished, there’s a large jet at Melbourne International that they’re doing an oil change and tyre kick on, in preparation for a little flight coming up.
I told him….”I’m gonna’ need the bugger pretty soon…..” :clock: :clock: :clock:

It appears I might be there.  Still haven’t made airline or any other reservations and might not until early August.  I would likely only come to Mandello for a day (hotels anywhere near are surely sold out) but my constraints on travel are slowly disappearing and my bike in Europe needs exercise. If I make it I’ll look for a guy in a funny jacket.

We should post as to our whereabouts if we want to meet up.
It seems as simple as a pre determined destination/time and just be there.

We should be there with Tasmanian friends, 8th through 12th.  Rather than random bumping into each other, I would suggest a time and location to try and gather briefly.  I don't yet know of any formal activity schedule.  So, anything we plan might still change at the last minute.

I propose Friday, 2pm, under the huge pine tree (cypress?) in the center of Piazza Garibaldi.
Do a Google Map for coordinates N45.91274, E9.31663 and ask for a street view.
If anyone else has a better day, time, location I'm fully open.

An interesting tool that I recently heard of was "what3words". By the description given I would be guessing "barstool.intensivel y.reference". Google what3words and put the 3 words in the search. You may be meaning the other side of the tree storefronts.quells. exhibitions or I might have the location incorrect.

This comes in handy in a phone conversation as you just give the three words and it narrows it down to a 3x3 meter square. Very handy in a crowd.

Good idea!

As for me, I don't presently plan to arrive that early in the day.
Perhaps schedule a meeting also on Saturday? Same place and hour -

Hmmmm….
Therein lies the problem David my dear….
Never mind, I’m sure a steady diet of pasta and red wine in Italy, will see me right..

I’m currently engineering a plan to meet frans belgium from here on WG somewhere in well……..Belgium…!
That will (hopefully) be my first stop on my trek North from Calais on Sep 3 or 4.
Then up into the Netherlands to see some more friends that I met in Pompeii in 2019.

It’s starting to look a bit like this
(https://i.ibb.co/6NTzmdD/3-A60-B0-D5-F2-AE-4-CEC-B1-E1-0-CF69-B06-CB48.png) (https://ibb.co/6NTzmdD)

Then (something like) this…
(https://i.ibb.co/1n8Lyd2/1-EB2-ECDD-394-B-4329-B04-B-A11-C3-A710913.png) (https://ibb.co/1n8Lyd2)

Now all this might work out to be really beaut, because I see that the trip up and around to Mandello is kind of in the 1,600 km bracket and my Norge has 197,300 km on the clock…
So the plan to turn over 200,000 k at Mandello might just come to fruition…!

It’s getting close Peter!
A friend of mine has joined me, we are both picking up Guzzis in Rome on the 1st and working our way up through Umbria and Tuscany with a potential ride to the Cinque terra before lading in Mandello. We will get in touch with you around the 6th

Cheers

No worries Jim.
My friend in Paris has lost his licence for doing 170 km/h so I’ll not be stopping by his apartment. The loose plan for me is to fly into Heathrow on Sep 1 and depart for Dover on Sep 2.
Turn left at Calais and up into the Netherlands to visit on 3rd and 4th, then down through Mt Blanc tunnel via Chamonix, up and over Simplon Pass and drop into Mandello.
I’ll probably arrive Mandello around the 6th.

Or something similar.

I'm flying Wednesday to Venice for a week of Dolomiti/Veneto  touring with Falcone friends before moving on to Mandello.  Alas, Regina's mother (97) has become very frail and requires daily care so Regina must remain home.  People generally prefer to meet her rather than me.  :-(

Not much yet, but I got into Heathrow@ 4:30 am as it said on the tin.
Straight through the formalities like a rat up a drainpipe and got to the depot @ 6:15… only to be greeted by a closed door, they open at 8:30…..
Went for breakfast and came back at 8:00 am and the door was opening…. :thumb:
The guy who runs the show had inflated the tyres to spec and test fired the red rattler……..Boom…! :thumb:
This is the action around that.

So now I’m parked up in Sarf London and will head for Dover either tomorrow morning or Sunday morning, but no later.
The plan is to cross to Calais then up to the Netherlands to visit some folk, with a bit of luck maybe Frans Belgium.
After that it’s Mandello in the Tom Tom and no more buggerising around.

Hoping that the rain in the Alps isn’t as per the current forecast.  What does 60% chance of rain mean exactly anyway?

I’m sitting in 104 F/40 C heat now, and will be flying to Europe tomorrow night.  Cooler weather doesn’t sound so bad today.

A nice quiet ride up to Peize in the Netherlands today in 28 deg C…
The Norge ran typically beautifully and it’s good to have the long legs back again. I was surprised to encounter this.. https://youtu.be/Wj-5-kg-0xM
I have never seen one before.
On the 18 hour (non stop…!) leg of the flight from Perth to London, I watched Blues Brothers #1 (again), and yesterday reminded me of the leap over the tilt bridge in the movie.
I didn’t try it…. :undecided:
Anyway.
A short (ish) ride today down to Neiwhuisen then on the morning of the 6 th, down into Switzerland to the home of a brand new WG member who lives 3 hrs from Mandello. He he’s offered to put me up and I really appreciate it..
I won’t mention his name yet because permission is pending..
Here is the journey thus far..

On an aviation forecast it means that there is 60% chance of significant rain in the forecast period.
Not as I used to think, that it will rain 60% of the time…
But good point Tus.

Mandello tomorrow!

Road from Genoa north on the tiny twisty roads, lovely mountain pass, roads made for motorcycles! Narrow, steep, hairpins all along the way.

Visiting the MV Augusta Museum this afternoon, went up to the factory at Varesse but couldn’t get past reception, they felt sorry for me and tossed me a keychain, one takes what one can get.

I did walk around the outside of the old Aero Macchi sea plane factory that became Aermacchi and then Cagiva. Amazing that after all these years motorcycles are still being made in the picturesque lakeside factory surrounded by such beauty.

A few delays today as product of a late getaway from Holland and lots of time searching for Wi Fi to load maps.
A couple of young guys on bikes let me search using their “hot spot”……
They are trying to get an association together, their e mail is..

Thundertribe2020@gmail.com

They were great young guys and were well pleased to hear that I would give them a mention here.
The upshot is that I’m currently in Saarbrucken and I’ll do the 500 k to Christoph Steiner’s place in Switzerland tomorrow.
That’ll put me in Mandello early on the 8 th…..That’ll do.

I heard today from my friend Lorenzo from Galatina in (deep southern) Italy. He's riding his Norge to Mandello but was in Austria today at the Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum (a bit south of Innsbruck). It looks fantastic and not that far from Mandello in case any of you in the general area might be interested.

Sorry no pictures yet but...
Rode down from Liechtenstein yesterday following A13 till we turned off on SS36 over Splugenpass. Extremely tight switchbacks are not so much fun on this HOG as one Guzzis! Judi maintained well until the pavement ended for a few turns. She decided to walk that part. Then  as it was starting to rain, a good Samaritan stopped and offered to take her over in a car. I followed them up and over . She managed to avoid donning the rain gear as it had slowed to spotty drizzle by the time she got back on the bike.
We are now set up in our quarters in Lierna, by the harbor at Grumo. We're about 9km north of Mandello where we went to the grocery store last night. Lightning and rain came in after we got home and kept up most of the night.
Anyone else in town that would like to make contact PM me and we can share phone numbers.

Rain in Austria this morning but it cleared in time to cross Albula Pass on dry roads in the sunshine   Now hoping to play a little in Switzerland, weather permitting, before heading south on Lukmanierpass and from there to Mandello tomorrow.

It seems like about half the bikes seen on the road today were Guzzis, in some areas more.

I'm spending the night in Zernez, in the Engadina valley in Switzerland, right up for Chiavenna.

Saw lots of Guzzis heading towards Mandello today!

Unfortunately I can’t make 2PM, I’m sitting at the ferry port in Menaggio, no ferry to Varena until 2:20 PM.  Mandello is so near but so far.  Think I’ll ride around the top of the lake instead and hope to run into few people later.

The peninsula in the foreground is BTW Bellagio.

I would spend a week in Mandello next week after the chaos has left town, accomatition will be easy. all power to you.

Craig. Melbourne (OZ)
Yeah it’s a bit under an hour but I take your point.
Spent some time around the place today and crashed into a few Aussies.
So far I have met ccoli on the first day.
Tomorrow I’ll be back there at about midday until whenever. The offer to stay here is open for tomorrow night, although I might throw the tent up in Lecco.
The Norge is on 199,300 so I’m gunna’ hang around and turn over the 200,000 at Mandello as was always planned.
The new coat went belly up in Lake Como today again as planned, then a ride up and around various places to dry it out.
There’s not much point me taking and posting shots, the guys that are here will do a better job than me.

SPIII rig we admired
Main entrance to the factory
Crowd outside the factory
Ditto
There's always a guy like this in the crowd...on a Galletto
Me with Carlo
Me admiring some vintage bacon slicers
The WG crowd
Check out the front end on that! And I thought my earls fork was complex.
Custom bike builders row
The view from someone's office in the old factory
The restaurant across the street from our apartment at Grumo Beach
I'd like to thank my wife, Judi for taking pictures.
I didn't take any.

The Guzzi press only wanted to talk to you if you were under 50.
Eliminated alot of the attendees.
Hope Huzo made it over Stelvio today as there was snow up there overnight!
We're here 1 more day yet. Weather has been really good.

Well yes..
As is widely reported, the thingo came and went fabulously. The band was an AC/DC tribute outfit and I can tell you they didn’t cut ANY corners. The lead singer was unintelligible and as such was an absolute copy of Brian Johnson.
Great stuff…
So it came to pass that I hooked up with Aussie Mick from the forum and we ended up staying in Lecco, although I did do Saturday night at the concert venue with the tent 50 metres from the back of the stage.
I was lulled of to a gentle sleep by such classics as..
“She’s got the Jack….”
“Hell’s bells…”
“Whole lotta’ Rosie…”
and a veritable gold mine of other gentle rock classics….  :thumb:
But that’s not what you came for..

I did indeed depart from Lecco and darted off to Bormio at the foot of the Stelvio Pass and I note that the road has been improved dramatically on that side, as indeed it has on the descent side.
The surface is like a Moto GP track, I almost got my knee down…!
Speaking of which..
I was zooming down the Pass at a speed that made Jack Miller look like Pee Wee Herman..(fast that is..) and there was a guy behind on a BMW GS contraption, he was all over me like a cheap suit and seem to be able to pick the worst time to have a crack at passing.
Well…
I dived into a right hander on the old Norge and was having unbridalled fantasies about hanging the back end out like Marc Marquez, when an old geezer in something that looked like a Nissan Cedric with wooden panels, thought he’d take the line..
Here’s a much neater example of one.
(https://i.ibb.co/nz0sM7n/9-F3-B2-ECC-6-E01-4833-9449-D8-E891862397.png) (https://ibb.co/nz0sM7n)

Nice eh…?
Being the economist that I am I braked, stood the Norge up a bit to go around the outside Buffalo Boy style, and was greeted to the sound of expensive German metal, smearing itself over the hallowed surface of the Stelvio Pass.
Put simply, our intrepid BMW Pilot lost it, took the third of two possible options and went arse up into the ditch.
I tried my best to look crestfallen as I stopped to help but his mate arrived shortly after, so I left the scene of the carnage….
Funny as…
Here’s some random shots of stuff.
Our new member csteiner’s place in Switzerland.
He hosted me over night, it’s fantastic.

Bormio was about 26 deg C and Stelvio Pass about 11 deg C.
They’ve done a nice job of that road..

Thanks Craig, but it needs to be said that Aussie Mick….Peacemealadventurer
Does every bit as much as me and more, but anyway it is good to be out and about.
And while you were away…..
I darted off over the Stelvio to a nice camping place on the other side and set up the tent and the stuff inside, except for one important piece of kit…
I have an American made ultra lite cot that I’ve used since 2014, it puts you 4” above the ground and is fantastically comfortable.
As I was assembling it which usually takes 5 minutes, I came to the bit where you get the 6’ x 2’6” Kevlar bit that goes over the top and fully intended to fit as I’ve done hundreds of times.
Seems while dealing with the ever present media pack.. I’d loaded the bike without packing it and took off.
So I had three options..
#1 Do the rest of the trip without it…
#2 Buy a whole new one…
#3 Ride back the 200 km to Lecco, with no guarantee that it would be there…

I got onto Aussie Mick and mercifully he had not left Lecco, he pulled himself out of bed…(so to speak) and confirmed that the sheet was indeed there and my trek back across the Pass would not be fruitless. So I did the trip back and will stay here again tonite.
I took some more shots for general amusement.

Left Mandello/Lecco with 300 k or so still short.
It clicked over the 200 just outside of Verona. Sorry I did not get the shot at the gate, things just never seem to work out for me…

Home now.  Got to meet everyone I intended to.  A few more I didn't expect.  Alas there were even more I could have met but never knew they were in the crowd and only realized after I got home.  Crowd?  Local magazine estimated 70,000.  Official ceremonies ended at 3pm Sunday.  I left Piazza Garibaldi at 9pm and others were still downing the brew.  What a hoot of an event.  Non-stop at every corner.

I noted that there were a lot of older folks in attendance.  Somebody's end of the boat is sinking.  Have to say, apart from the many static displays, there must have been 500 active Guzzi singles riding all around town.

I returned home again on Sunday, and saw and met guzzisti along the way until I was home on Tuesday morning. Here are  Guzzis on the ferry from Kiel, Germany to Oslo.

Pebra, I got a kick out of seeing a Mr. Nevada shirt at the Mandello Annivesary celebration. LOL  Few people probably know what that is.  As a restrained update on The Great One, let me say that Mr. Nevada lives!  Time is catching up with him and he has slowed down a bit. Trips to Krispy Kreme have tapered off along with varied health issues so he has lot a lot of weight.  I still talk to him every few days or so and on occasion he gets out of the house.  Deep down, Mr. N hasn't changed his stripes and his urges of a time gone by are still with him.

Yes, I wore the Mr Nevada T-shirt in Mandello on Saturday, and was stopped on a couple of occasions by people who recognized it!

The Mr Nevada thread was wonderful in its bizarre (and sad, really) way, it gave me great entertainment that I'm grateful to you for.
Thanks also for the update on him! I guess it's too much to hope for a new thread?

Bugger all happened today, except what you see here..

I lost my ‘phone today and used the “find my phone “ app to locate it…..
Fantastic thing, I tracked it down to under a bench at a hotel….
Funny thing though.
I tried to get a hotel room in Slovenia and there were two left out of 200…Great..!
Until the poor girl behind the desk had to tell me that the rooms were €190 per night..!
Son of a mongoose…!
I asked her if she could explain why as the rooms became more scarce, the price increased exponentially. When the poor little soul looked nervous, I realised I was becoming the disgruntled old male western tourist and pulled my head in..
She was a dear little soul and someone’s lovely daughter..Bt Jeeesarse….!
Anyway, I found a good place here.

The young lady asked what I wanted for dinner and I said..”Just whatever you recommend…”
Then this arrived..

Judi and I have returned the loaner Harley to it's garage in Karlsruhe. Managed to miss most of the rains. Got into 1 pretty good soaker but pulled off into a gas station with an awesome canopy where we waited 30 minutes for the storm to blow by.
The HD reminds me of an old polka song...I don't want her, you can have her,  she's too fat for me!
Attending a big Rock show tonight in Stuttgart (Helloween), then we fly out Sunday.
Had a great time and met a few new friends!

Arthur Godfrey’s version:
https://youtu.be/3cn-iPEEzfA

I use to live in a predominantly Polish/Ukrainian neighborhood in NYC and every Saturday afternoon the elderly(probably my current age) guy who lived next door to us played a Polka song that sort of went like this:  “She types letters, and letters, and she types them with a polka beat”  and I have no idea who the band or singer was and I’ve look on the internet with no results.  We lived next door to that guy for years, he was not friendly so I couldn’t ask him about the song.

I darted through Budapest today before I got started.
The real excitement started though, before I got out of the underground car park.

I left my room on the 3rd floor and carried most of the hardware down to the bike and after loading that, went back up to the room to get my helmet, coat, i pad and phone etc….
While loading the first lot of stuff, I noticed a guy pull up near a sensor and the door opened up for him, so armed with that incalculably valuable piece of information, I felt that nothing could go wrong from here on…
Well, almost…
Upon checking out at the front desk, I left my key and borrowed ‘phone  adapter, planning to make good my exit. After putting on ALL of my wet weather gear, I thumbed the starter and after about 3 “shikook…shikook…shikooks…) the bike rumbled into life and I headed towards the steel door.
It looked like one of the type on the “Get Smart” opening credits.
So I stopped near the sensor and no amount of jumping up and own would make it register my presence, so I sweatily climbed off and trudged backup the stairs to the desk…
Everyone there was immaculately dressed and I looked like Catweasel…. :embarrassed:
I breathlessly asked the poke faced girl if some instructions on how to get the door open would be forthcoming after she stopped checking her socials on her phone book sized mobile.
.”Dare is ‘phone on vall of garage, you must ring udder reception and dey vill open for you…”
Well alllrighttyyy then.
Off back down to the bike, by now I’m sweating like a whore in a church and in no mood. Also bear in mind that the underground garage in terms of dimensional analysis, closely resembles that of the one at Heathrow’s terminal 3…
Big that is..!
So after looking around for ages on “vall of garage” and not seeing a ‘phone, I deduced that the little box with the button, surely must be what Miss Botox had meant all along right ?
WRONG…!
I pressed the button after lifting the plastic hinged lid, and all the alarms in the place went off and the lights in the garage went out..!
A small security light remained on up in the corner. I was able to make my way back to the access stairs, just as a herd of security personnel came hurtling towards the door..
“Are you ok Sir..?”
Asked the nice head of security lady in the six inch heels..(obviously de rigeur for duties such as tackling security breaches..)
“Hell yeah, I just pushed the little button” (and they reckon men can’t find it..)

Well by now the entire security staff were mingling in the near darkness of the underground car park, doors locked shut, alarms screaming and Sodium light security beams activated.
All I wanted was to get out, I was on the bike ready to go.
They had to ring someone on the outside to activate the door to release us….Talk about buggerising around…!
Eventually a detail arrived and got the door up and I burst out into the Budapestian morning gloom.
“You will be leaving now Sir ?”
Said the nice lady with a look of expectant hope on her face.
I replied..
“I just have to go back in to get some Wi Fi to make a call..”
But on second thoughts there appeared to be an angry mob forming amid the alarm, sirens and locked doors.
So I thought I’d make a dignified exit..(Didn’t want to draw any unwanted attention…) :bike-037:

I spoke with a dealer who spent a week over there during the big shindig.

A question asked by many is where would that new engine be manufactured.  The dealer was specifically told that the new motor would be in production very soon.  Also, everything will be made at the old Guzzi facilities in Mandello del Lario.

By the way, that dealer who went to Mandello DL said he is 6'1" and he sat on the new V100 (no rides offered for anyone other than movie stars) and the dealer liked the new bike.  He said it was larger than a V7 but smaller than the V85. At home he rides a full-sized Stelvio NTX.

Well…
Today was a bit of a time for reflection and an alteration of plans.
From the moment I crossed over the tip of the Adriatic, just like last time I began to witness a gentle yet inexorable decline in the level of privilege.
The descent from Ljubljana down to Craiova, saw the entry into Romania and the realisation that the standards of living that we learn to enjoy, diminish as you head East and South. It’s not one particular thing, just a sliding of standards of social etiquette, driving, building standards etc…
If you go to a hotel, it’s as if all of the foregoing is a load of rubbish.
The rooms are clean, well heated and the staff are charming and very obliging, that’s because you are where the money is…
I’ve noticed it before, there is a wide gulf between the have’s and the have not’s. Western European money allows you to enjoy every luxury that you’ve come to expect at home, but more than once in a beautiful entrance lobby, it was intimated to me that the person behind the desk could not afford to stay in the hotel that they were working in.

I mused at the possibility that these Eastern European countries do not place the same level of importance on the outward appearance of their homes as we do, certainly in Australia. It’s possible to ascertain a person’s socio economic status, by the look of their house at home.
I think here it is not necessarily so.
Still, like before as you’re tootling through the interminable rural villages, old men and ladies sit outside on wooden benches and fix their gaze on you as you roll by, you get the feeling it has been forever thus.
Some things are just sad though.
As I left a store to get back on the bike, a young man of about 12 or so, just stared at the Norge as if he’d never seen anything so fabulous, yet in Rome, Rimini or Paris it wouldn’t get a second glance. He had old sneakers with his toes poking out, grimy trousers with a piece of cord where the belt would normally be and a top with a logo of (I think) Boston State University or something emblazoned on the back. I gave some thought to wondering if tomorrow’s corporate bankers, surgeons and stockbrokers on the Blue Blood streets of Boston, were even aware that a young man destined for (at best) a life of petty crime in an impoverished rural area of Romania, was championing their learning institutions.
I think not…
Particularly sobering was the 4 wheeled cart with horse still attached, bogged up to the hubs on the roadside and the patch of grass within stretching distance of the poor beast, grazed down to the mud and the 1’ high green shoots just out of reach. I wondered how long the poor thing had been there.
A little dog dead on the road, 10 metres from where the initial collision happened (judging by the trail), that had dragged it’s poor self that far before dying. He was probably the lucky one, no one even took any notice.

There were miles and miles of this..

You know you’re in an underprivileged place, when you can’t tell the difference between the buildings being built and the ones being demolished.
The children’s playground with rocky dirt and broken glass under the swings was I thought, a fairly powerful metaphor.
As was this…
(https://i.ibb.co/tqWpsCb/F2-D32785-AE73-4189-AD39-E00420303333.jpg) (https://ibb.co/tqWpsCb)

A symbol of faith and hope, disappearing under the years of neglect and lack of care.

I certainly did not want my Norge to break down there and in some ways felt guilty for even owning it…

It’s with a slight pang of implied guilt that I’m going to Dubrovnik tomorrow, because fortunately, I can…

We’re a very lucky bunch…

In the US they are generally not "blue bloods" even in Boston... and they are often immigrants, like the Romanian PhD who reports to me for $180K per annum. He and his wife are both engineers from Bucharest, and good ones, now happily working in the US.  The secret for those with ambition anywhere is to go where the opportunity lies, and don't take no for an answer.

I had a great Euro bike trip this year, Mandello celebration included, but am now back in the US working, making money for next time   Each trip is about $6K the way I do it.

As usual Tusayan, your words are sage and ignored at one’s peril.
However to a degree, you have catalysed my thoughts. The guy is well educated, but sees that his talents would be wasted in his home country.
Hence the brain drain.
BTW mate..
If he “reports to you” and is on 180 large a year, I can’t see why a European jaunt @ $6k would require you “saving up”.

Well, I don’t know what to tell y’all about today..
I was a bit jumpy from the word go. Last night I was assured that my dinars would not be of any use where I was going, so I used them up instead of the plastic.
But.
After 45 minutes out of town, I came to the Serbian/Bosnian? border.
I went through the usual “YOU GIVE DOCUMENT….!” Request and after sliding my passport through the half inch opening that Vladimir had arranged for me, he threw it back at me..(almost)
Then, “You now give document for Moto….”
Okay, here’s one I prepared earlier, but then the hijinx really began.
“YOU GIVE GREEN CARD INSURANCE, HURRY UP…!”
(Jeez Vladimir, don’t tell me your Marlborough is getting cold….)
“IS BIG PRROBBLEMMBB……YOU NO INSURANCE FOR BOSNIA…!”
Son of a mongoose, this is for sure not good.
“Ahhh, is no prroblemmb” says Vladimir
“You can buy here..”
You beauty Vladimir all is not lost, until I was made aware that plastic will not do the job.
“YOU MUST GIVE CASH….CASH…!”
Just like this guy. https://youtu.be/4NFv5IGP2uA
So off I went, back the 50 km over the mountains to secure 2,400 dinars..(bugger all in € but definitely required)
Upon returning all was well, but by the time you factor in finding a Bancomat (ATM) then riding back, you’ve no change out of two and a half hours..

The real destabilising thing about today and it wasn’t a fun killer, but the way that drivers coming towards you, WILL NOT, stay on their side of the road. All of the driving side (left) wheels were over the white line and gently drifting into my lane, just for no damn reason and when going around (mostly) blind corners in the mountains, the ubiquitous black Audi or silver Benz absolutely flogging around the bend and coming across the line…!
I don’t know if I’m just getting old, but I rather hoped to keep doing it and I’m hoping not to die over here..
I have a V85 to service in Australia.
The worst one was and I am not exaggerating…
It was a straight road with good visibility approaching a small village, speed was about 50 mph.
There was a guy riding a pushbike quite safely and legally coming in the opposite direction…No dramas.
But old mate in the red Fiat Panda coming up behind the pushbike, seemed to judge it perfectly so he needed to pull out..(I wish his Father had all those years ago..) and flung the Panda to (his) left and headed STRAIGHT at me. His position in the visor did not move left or right, it just got bigger…
When the old fart realised there was 350 kg of red bike and rider about 30 metres ahead, he woke from his stupor and slammed back across into his lane…!
If he had flipped the thing over and it caught fire, I SERIOUSLY don’t think at that point I would have felt disposed towards dragging him out…
Cruel I know, but fair..
Anyway I’m here, who could ask for more ?

I had a similar insurance problem when riding north from Dubrovnik, through the little piece of Bosnia that pokes out to the coast.  Nobody at the border asked for a ‘green card’ to show proof of insurance, which was expedient because I knew on my card Bosnia had an X through it.  I rode the short stretch back into Croatia very carefully.

Earlier that morning (still in Croatia, just north of Dubrovnik on the coast road) a local kid on a scooter came up from behind, almost hit me and then lost the front end in front of me.  I was sure I was about to witness something pretty bad when he saved it like some knee-down Moto GP rider and carried on, throttle twisted full open.

Enjoy dinner, give thanks that the day went without incident, and ride with care tomorrow…. It worked for me anyway in Slovenia that evening.

Here’s an example of believing what you want to believe..
Today as I was coming up out of Dubrovnik, I had occasion to sample some long uphill (and downhill) grades.
Because my Norge is no monster in the power and torque department, I noticed that given the loaded weight, I opted to downchange a few times where an 8V would not have needed to..
But here’s the thing.
I feel that having a bike with less than tyre shredding performance, means you have to be cognisant of what load you are asking it to bear.
Something like a Centauro or Ducati Multistrada et al, would just take the hill and crush it with no conscious twist of the throttle.
I’m not sure that is necessarily a good thing.
My bike tells me what it is feeling and that is because it needs a mindful approach to working it through the mountains and overtaking in marginal spaces.
You are cajoled into considering the bike’s “feelings” if that is not too romantic a notion.
An example might be, you are looking to overtake a truck on a twisting mountainous road and only get short 100 metre sections to accomplish it.
With an estimated 90 kg of rider and 60 kg of luggage aboard, you’ve to plan and understand your bike to get it done safely, where a Centauro or V100 would doubtless just slam past in top gear, my 2VPC tractor needs to be spun up to 4,000-6,000 rpm… and I love it..!
A bike like my mate’s Kawasaki ZX14 R will just crush anything beneath it’s wheels, but you do feel insulated from the work being done for you.
You can tell what the Norge is thinking and how it is feeling by how it responds.
With the Kawasaki, you just have to order a hit and the job will done without you feeling a thing…

Not sure that is necessarily a bonus…..

BTW..
A bit of today’s action.

Well, it was an estimate..
But the left pannier holds tent, and other wet weather gear. Gotta be 15 kg.
Right pannier has extra clothes, oil, various items for repairs and such. At least 15.
Top case has documents, bathroom supplies, spares, various other paraphernalia. No way under 15.
So conservatively 45 kg.
The red Ortleib bag that is ever present between me and the top case, would be 5 or 6.

Really, the empty weight of the panniers and top case is not negligible.

Ok..
About to leave Venice (again) and I’m heading up to Cortina at the start of the Dolomites.
The weather is forecast to turn somewhat and so if it goes downhill, I’ll park up there. I got a call from a friend in Paris this morning and a rough plan was hatched to meet up with him next weekend, where if things go as usual, the bike will find itself in an underground garage and I will have to settle for a couple of days slumming around Paris with a native Parisienne Lawyer, who knows every square millimetre of the place and is across all of the customs….
On the way across, I’ll be stopping at Mandello to have the oil changed in the bike, it will not be 10,000 km at that point, but close enough not to ride by.
I expect to do something like 15,000 on this trip, but could blow out to 20,000.
It’s happened before..

Anyway…
Off to the Dolomites.

Those panniers can hold a lot. I have the same ones.
I haven't tested them in rain yet.
I am curious about the repair items and spares.  What items turned out to be needed and what did you have to buy locally?

I'm not trying to jinx you, but check your top pannier is locked to the rack and doesn't rattle.
Mine flew off and tumbled into the middle of a highway.
It unlocked itself after going over a very rough patch because some of the rubber bumpers on the rack went missing.
I was procrastinating replacing them and didn't expect it would fall off.
A truck couldn't avoid it and hit it with the front tire.
The box skidded across two lanes into the breakdown lane.
Nothing broke. Just skid marks. I should be able to sand and repaint.
These bins are really tough.

I have been down to Sicily and up again in the past and it was great..!
There were some things about travelling in and around Romania and Albania that I did not like. Now I have to settle for the Italian Alps and later Paris….

I have added a latch to the front of the pannier as well, it now has three.
Also I have made a 5 mm steel pin that is fitted to the rear rack, there is a corresponding hole in the top case and the pin pokes through it into the inside when the case is on.
Then there is a Clevis pin that goes through that..
The case cannot come off.
I actually forgot once that the pin was in and wondered why I could not get the case off…!

Sometimes I’m certain that what I do is somewhat out of the ordinary and possibly noteworthy in some small measure, then there are times when I’m sure it’s nothing.

A couple of days ago I was sitting and on the point of dozing off, while waiting for the campground washing machine to finish. I saw a guy who looked about midway between 40 and 60 come riding in on a pushbike, with various items of paraphernalia hanging off it.
His legs looked like the skin was paper thin, because every damn muscle that existed in them was visible, although he was wearing long socks…???
After what seemed like a reasonable time, I engineered a chance encounter and found that he was (and presumably still is), a lively conversationalist.
After swapping a few dot points on our respective lives, he happened to drop the comment that he had spent some time (2 years) in a wheelchair as a result of a paragliding accident..(No I did not use the gag…)
Realising that my life was about as boring as a faceless inner city office worker’s compared to his, I asked him could he share some insights as to what he was about.
Well it seems that prior to his mishap with the paraglider, he was the standard social drinking, partying (in every sense), ordinary Belgian male, but the time in the chair caused him to reflect on how he wanted to spend the rest of his life…
So…
After finding that the surgery on his (now) crooked lower limbs, was showing signs of success, he became determined to leave the chair behind and alter his outlook on things. I did not ask what his vocation was but whatever it had been, he threw it in the scrap bin, sold EVERYTHING, bought a pushbike and began circumnavigating the world.
After having done it once, he thought the only thing he could think of to do, was do it again…and again…and…well, you guessed it…
He has been around “multiple times” and top to bottom USA and Australia, it’s all he does now…Nothing else.
I felt that he knew he had my respect, so I felt it safe to ask..
”Do you need to work to fund your venture..”
His reply was..
“I don’t need to work anymore..”
The accompanying look told me that his accident whilst dramatically unfortunate, had left him able to support his lifestyle indefinitely.
As for the long socks..?
He rolled them down and his lower limbs looked like they’d been attacked with a hammer over an anvil…
I asked him how he managed to do what he does with them in such condition..
His reply…?
“Sometimes it hurts a lot….”

None taken Jorg old mate..
I posted the encounter with that very aspect in mind. I think the take away for me, is that we should all endeavour to do as much as WE can.
But that guy was a Rock of Gibraltar in my eyes. I mentioned to him that I never pass a cyclist without sparing a thought about their mental toughness.
If you read again the opening line, you’ll see that I’m in no way comparing my trip to his…

A Mandello memory, a picture of the Guzzi factory taken from the hill above, behind that yellow plaster facade of the ancient factory walls is a pretty busy looking plant.

I’m currently parked up back in Sovico after spending a couple of days in Cantu’ just out of Como.
A guy saw my bike in a car park at the base of the Stelvio and recognised it from some other place. He made himself known and put me up for a couple of days…
I’m going for a ride on Saturday, but until then will just hang here.
Here are some shots of the landscape and I went to the same museum as Canuck 750. Some of my shots are the same as his, but you might see something different.

Yeah Jim.
Those hairpin bends had me being pretty careful. The temp gauge was reading 3 deg and the water was on the road, not far from ice…!
I’m getting old.. :undecided:

I’m not convinced of the first premise Mark, but I’ll bet what’s left of my life on the second one…
I don’t seem to have any (realistic) dreams that haven’t been realised or potentially can be.
I would like to ride a CT110 Honda from Melbourne to London. I will get to meet Nathan Millward in London on this trip.
He’s the guy who did it on 1 week’s notice.
That will be good.

hope you can make the "states" one of these years so we could meet up - but if not guess we can also do it in Italy.  I'm overdue to get back there.

safe travels,

I can get a bike from one of the forum members.
I have a rough plan…
If I can get enough volunteers to put me up with no more than 500 km between, I’d like to go from Charlotte down and across to San Francisco, over THE BRIDGE, up the West Coast to Canada then across the top to end up descending through New York back to Charlotte.
If I could get accomodation pledges, I’d donate what I would have spent to the forum…
Sounds like a plan to me…

Hmmm..  I’m only a little more than 100 km sw of Charlotte.  It would make for a kind of short first day of riding.

I'm in - BUT you'll need to head to the North Coast of USA to make that work!

Photo Stelvio sit on a corner and photograph everything that passes. You order what you want from the net.
These are a selection from the last crossing.

Passo Stelvio isn’t really the best pass to ride, even if it’s very photogenic.  Short straights and hairpins, more of a traverse than a sport ride.  On the weekends it’s often a scene, literally a parade of bikes all in a row, and its a place where you’re likely to run into trouble.  One time a guy on an MV Brutale lost it in front of me but I was happy to miss him.

Another time (2002) I had an adventure there that was completely my own fault.  I’d stayed in Mals Venosta the night before, pretty much at the base of the north end of Stelvio. I’d decided to cross the next morning, knowing the road was closed but also knowing that closed in Italy means something different than it means in let’s say Switzerland.  Half way up the plows were working, the drivers motioned that I really needed to turn around but I wanted to get to the top.  Eventually and inevitably I tipped it over on ice, scratching the fairing on a rental Ducati ST2.  Happily it had already been lightly tipped over on that side and my added scratches were not significant. I picked the bike up and decided I’d pushed my luck far enough, heading east towards Merano and Bolzano to get eventually get to the south end of the pass.

I still have the Northern Hemisphere issue of not “feeling” the direction that I’m actually heading. Going along the road at lunchtime, with the sun in front of you heading South, just feels….Wrong.
Also it moves from left to right in that circumstance..(have to get that fixed).
Heading towards Merano from Stelvio, I have to mentally fool myself to be convinced I’m going East.
Yeah.
There are probably better ones, Spluga was more intense etc…
But they are not called…”Stelvio”.
Plus, I always stay at Hotel Sagemuhle

I can squeeze past the end of the barrier and don’t need to remember the passcode …
What a bonus….!

The last week or so, I’ve been parked up at the homes of two very generous and kind families. One in Cantu’ and one in Sovico.
But time marched on as inevitably does and this morning I departed Sovico and I now find myself having an evening meal of seafood while having to put up with the sound of the waves lapping against the shore on the Italian Riviera..

https://youtu.be/1ZIS-RNj1nw
The vision isn’t much good, but jeez the sound’s great..!

Can’t I get some peace…?
Anyway, what is it about Italian drivers..?
They simply are INCAPABLE of sitting behind a driver or rider in front of them. The idiots on scooters are just diabolically stupid when passing cars, with vehicles coming the other way. If I saw it once I must have seen it 100 times, a scooter dives past a car ( or truck…!) with a car coming towards them..
Our hero occupies the scant space between the two vehicles with a closing speed of 160 km/hr, if the car driver wanted to, he could order the biker’s death, by just closing the gap when the overtake was half done..
Just madness…!
They live in heaven and cannot wait to get to hell…..
It’s got me rooted…

Hey Tuyusan,

I stayed in Mals Venosta when I was over there - what a great place. Stayed in a B&B and had the most amazing food at a good price. The owner was a farmer as well as running the accommodation.

Mals is surely a good central location for riding in every direction, with nice routes into Switzerland, Austria and Italy.  Years ago a group of us who did European trips used to stay there at the Garberhof for that reason but it moved up market (i.e. the price too high for what you get). It’s also a very direct route to Mals from Munich, along the Inn Valley and over the Reschenpass so now the parking lot is filled with new cars with Munich plates on the weekends.  Happily there are a lot of other choices in the area but for whatever reason I haven’t stayed in that immediate area since 2006.

This trip has been quite a bit different to all the others.
I seem to spend less time hopping from one tourist attraction to the next than has been the case in the past. I have been afforded the chance to stay with some established contacts from WildGuzzi in addition to new ones that I’ve had chance encounters with.
I came out of the Hotel Sagermuhle at the bottom of the Stelvio and was greeted by a guy in an unremarkable looking European car who chatted as if we’d known each other for ages…!
‘Seems he’d seen my bike somewhere a few days before and as he was going through the village his wife spotted it parked up.
She said (apparently)
“There’s that nice bike with the guy in the funny jacket….”
He told me continued on his way, wishing he could have stopped to chat..(he’s not a biker).
After a few minutes of pensive silence his wife said..
“You should have stopped to meet him…” :undecided:
So with that, he came back at once and we met as described. He left me with an open invitation to stay with him in Cantu’ which is 8 km from Sovico, which is 6k from Monza (where I rode a pushbike on the parabolica..!) which is 10 km from Como.
I spent multiple evenings at all those locations, with everything warm loving Italian family homes have on offer.

Right now I’m in Francois’ Paris apartment pondering the fuel crisis which now has closed 50% of the gasoline stations across this part of Europe. I have half a tank which is not enough to get me to Calais, but all is not lost since Francois has “several motorcycles in his underground garage, as well as many in other locations…”
We can milk the stale fuel from them and hurl it in the (now) venerable Norge for my jaunt to Calais.

Now as long as the ferry is not out of gas all will be good.

The complexion of my trips is changing as a reflection of my priorities. I had an enthralling 3 hr conversation about the politics of the current European conflict, most of which I had no clue about and actually did not have to fake my interest..!
As you’ll know if you’ve followed this thread, there have been some low points

but all in all, very memorable…
As I often say..
Time will write the final line… :clock: :bike-037:

All part of the big adventure Huzo!
Petrol's pretty much back on tap around here and the French Govmt have requisitioned key petrol workers so I'm pretty sure you'll be good after a bit of a search.

A couple of Francois’ bikes.
Not the little covered in BMW but I can almost see why you would for a wet city environment. The owner was really a great guy..!

The red rattler looks nice in Paris with her bottom bare…

Oh and BTW…
Last night right at the end of a particularly well lubricated conversation, Francois said that him and I should ride two small bikes to Nordkapp from Paris.
He has a Honda Monkey bike and I have the mile munching CT110 Honda.
I held my gaze as long as he did and at one point I think we shook hands, neither one of us blinked.

He has been before as have I a couple of times, but this would be different. My suggestion would be that we rendezvous at Calais and scuttle up from there….
Hmmmmm……..

I forgot to turn my tracker off when I left the bike in London post trip..
This is what it does in the cargo hold of a Qantas A380.

That's so cool.
Which one do you have? I've been wanting to get one as a theft alarm.

It’s made by a couple of lads here in Oz and they all themselves Solid GPS…
This is the result you get in practice.

Solid GPS  :thumb:

Are you back home now?
Looks like you chose the faster route back for the bike.

Nah, the bike is packed away in London.
I’m in bed in Australia. Got in this morning, the tracker was in my hand luggage.

I’ll finish off the thread in the next couple of days. It ended up 12,000 km which is a bit less than usual, but I did a lot of visiting of families.
Turned over 200,000 k near Mandello as planned and have a London to Nordkapp return trip on this

On the burner for 2024.
It’s only 7,000 k’s.
That’s a bit over one third of my Aussie lap on the same bike…
Anyone up to join me…?
