One probably stupid question ... sorry.
« on: October 16, 2021, 04:26:03 PM »

Autumn is here. Nevada has been put on rest (like I wrote a week ago). Winter is coming. First snow has came down in Lapland.
Today here (bit southern) was windy day and +5C. I still saw one motorcycle on road.

Ok, now to question. There are again lots of time to think for next season and what to do . A fuel gauge level came to my mind. That would be nice addition if only possible. There seemed to be quite a many aftermarket products available (even in reasonable price range), but has anyone really installed one of those into his motorcycle? If yes, how to do that?

I'm mainly wondering about possible fuel level sensor used in tank
 - What kind of (model, shape) because of shape of tanks
-  How to connect the sensor to gauge (wires, where)?

Can't help you with the fuel gauge caper but I've been riding two wheelers for a bit and if I had to choose between a fuel gauge and a trip mileage function, the trip meter would win hands down.
So if you have the trip function I wouldn't go for a gauge.

I prefer it by far.

I do not think there is one in Nevada 2005. It just shows total km. Or I'm not aware anything else.

That little black button below your red flasher button should cycle through several guage settings clock, temp, odometer. Does on Brevas anyway.

Thanks a lot. Me, washable blond ...  :azn:
I have removed the battery now, so I can not test that, but I trust on you.
Of course if using trip (as a help/indicator) that will need to fill the tank fully everytime.

If even thinking to set any fuel level sensor into tank, I wonder will you always need to make extra hole for it?
That sounds not nice.

Of course you can just open the cap and peer inside, shake the bike to see if you can see it sloshing around, you might even have a calibrated stick.

Tripmeter is right there

Push the bar once to get the tripmeter mileage

Push and hold for longer than you think you should and it resets to zero miles

Push again for temperature..keep pushing for total miles

 :bike-037:

I’m getting 50ish miles per gallon on my Nevada

125 miles or so to the low gas amber and warning light, with 1 gallon/50miles left in reserve

I always top up and reset the tripmeter

Do you have an owners manual for your bike, Arctic Fox?  Take a look here:

https://www.thisoldtractor.com/moto_guzzi_small_blocks_owner-s_manuals___rider-s_handbooks___use_and_maintenance_manuals.html

This Old Tractor may have your service manual too, or you can take a look here:

Don't ever worry about asking questions, that's all part of motorcycle ownership.  We're pleased to see you enjoying that bike.

About asking questions...

They're all good because those that know get to answer, making them feel good about helping. Those that wonder get to speculate and exercise their brains. Those that don't know get to learn. And there is good conversation to be enjoyed.   :thumb:
The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

Yes. Tank's shape just is so ''up curve?'' (quickly (after gas station) you'll hardly see fuel anymore but there are actually lots of it still in tank. Of course you can feel that if shaking bike.

I checked local Moto Guzzi forum. Actually one person had asked there exactly same question years ago :D). Outcome/replies? They suggested the same as you here (use trip meter).
I also got feeling that installation of aftermarket sensor could (in worse case) be painful job. They also said that bike has actually sensor (in tank) which will inform then fuel will start to end. Now I think I should test that next year. To see it will really work.  They said that with Nevada (full tank) you should easily get 200km, and after the warning light turns on ... still some 50km. Enough to keep pauses anyway. Will those sound realistic? That is hardly problem here (where I live) but if I ride to North (Lapland), Northern Sweden, Northern Norway ... distances (between gas stations) can be pretty long.

Manuals? I have these:

I think two small red ones are originals? Opposite the big one is more like book for self maintenance ... one (skillful) person could open whole engine with it or take a part the bike into small pieces and then put all back together.

So the answer is? I guess I'm just bad reader.

But thanks for these links Sarah. I will print them (the right ones) as I just get into suitable place (this -).

It's a good question. It is the 21st century and Moto Guzzi can't add a fuel gauge??? Harley can.
