The Datil NM rally now with more great pictures
« on: May 17, 2017, 12:45:29 PM »
Coming up the third weekend in August.  :thumb: Always a fun and scenic ride near the Continental Divide and the plains of St. Augustin. :1:  As always, there will be a core Arizona contingency riding there this year!   In previous years, I rode my Triumph Sprint GT and/or "Moby Dick", (my Victory Vision), but this year, I will be flogging my Centauro GT for the first time...

To go along with the Pie Theme, and the subject of Guzzi Rallies, I suggest that we have our very own theme song .....

Since Rodekyll is here helping me getting my trusty rigs back up to running, no telling what I'll be riding into Datil this August.   Even have a motel room reserved this time.

That part of New Mexico is a great destination, or just a nice area to pass through. It's a pity that the rally isn't in the Spring, though. The wildflowers near the Very Large Array (VLA) are really beautiful.

If you're there by tenting, be prepared before it happens. If it's really nasty we all get in the MGNOC reps. (host) toy hauler 'till it blows over.......but that's not too often.  :thumb:

...and I can tell you from personal experience...you DO NOT want to ride your motorcycle down a fire road like THIS after a good Datil rain!

It turns into a HUGE mudslide and I dropped my poor Triumph to the tune of $2300 in damage (paint and plastic mostly...) Never again!!

I've going to do my best to make it this year.   Looks like Datil is an easy 750 miles from Dallas!

Who won the bike last year?  What style was the bike?  Cafe 850T?  I'll do my best impression of a chef.  How far is the nearest market?  I'm looking at making "pupus" for the cocktail hour.

The closest real town is Socorro 60 miles away.  The motel/bar/café/gas station provide the food, and it's good.  They have booze but not much selection.  I bring my own box wine.

I never minded the rain, but, at times the lightning gets REAL close!  That's when it's time to head for Matt's trailer or the restaurant.

A few years ago that one tree in the middle of the campground was fresh 'kill' from a lightning strike.

I've never done the Datil rally, but am really eager to do it this year.

I'm not much for tent camping.   Any suggestions for where to stay?  I don't need anything fancy, just something like a real mattress and a shower.

Any tips on cool stuff to see between Dallas and Datil?

There will be more than a few of us staying at the luxurious LARGO MOTEL in Quemado, 20 minutes west of Datil.  Nice, clean, cost effective hotel with all the amenities. :1:  :thumb   Call and make your reservations NOW!

Pie Town is the only thing interesting in between.  Look at your map!!

Pie town is west of Datil, Dallas is east.

Depending on how much time you want to spend:
Texas Hill Country - Butler has a map
Big Bend N.P. and S.P.
Carlsbad Caverns
Roswell, NM. UFOs and Goddard's rocket development
White Sands N.M.

The best part about the Datil Rally is the characters you meet up there.    :thumb:  :1:

Here is the famous British actor, Sydney Grenstreet from "Casablanca!"

I was really looking forward to this last year but got stuck in town due to forest fire. It's on my calendar again along with the deep forest. Should be a good summer

Who's this McDermot MGNOC  Az. rep. fella?   I've been to the Cottonwood shindig this year and Datil rally the past few years and still don't recall meeting him.  Is he afraid to introduce hisself in public?     Hell, JJ, I thought you were the rep.  You seem to do the most effort.
