Just saw it today - Maltese Falcon.  The line is a paraphrase from Shakespeare - Act IV, The Tempest

jdg

Yes, the Maltese Falcon is one of my favorite Bogart films.

I am a fan.  My T shirt.

She is back on 2 wheels!

One hiccup is the centerstand.  Mike donated it to the project when I picked up the bike, which was nice of him.  I knew it wasn't the correct unit but was hoping it would work.  Ends up it is just too different from the correct unit in a number of ways, so it is coming off the bike.  The good news is I found a correct stand in Germany.  I should have it in a couple weeks.

I have been struggling, cussing, and discussing bleeding the bloody linked brake system on the 1000S!  Oh what fun!  :boozing:  The fact that the whole system was thoroughly cleaned and bone dry when I started the bleeding process makes it quite a challenge.  I have used the search feature to find all the sure fire methods others have used on the forum and tried most of them, but no love so far.  Out of desperation I ordered a new rear master cylinder today as the original despite having a new rebuild kit in it just doesn't seem to be doing the job.  I will report back on if the new master cylinder helped.

Girl Meets Bike - 1000S
« Reply #65 on: June 18, 2019, 06:29:39 PM »
And for those of you that didn't know, a 1000S was a central character in the movie Girl Meets Bike.  The main protagonist, Kat was ably played by Ruth Menard.  One of Kat's love interests in the movie is a 1000S.
Who could blame her!  :)

I just rebuilt the rear master cylinder on my Morini last evening. It too acted as if the rebuild didn't "take" until I bled just the master cylinder first. Removed the hose to the caliper, screwed in a fitting and hose that was long enough to reach the (remote) reservoir. Pumped the pedal until fluid flowed from the master cylinder to the reservoir. Hooked up the brake line and bled normally from there on.

Linked Brake Bleed Success!!
« Reply #68 on: June 20, 2019, 07:46:09 PM »
Charlie, I want to thank you for your suggestion.  I tried it out right away and it proved to me without a doubt that the problem was my master cylinder.  The old M/S would not pull fluid like it should from the reservoir.

I received my new master cylinder today.  I bled the rear master cylinder per the method Charlie recommended, which is dead easy.  All you need to do is disconnect the line from the master cylinder to proportioning valve at the proportioning valve, take the end of the line and submerge it in the reservoir and pump until all bubbles are gone.  I could tell the difference immediately and then knew that I had been beating my head against the wall all weekend struggling with the old crap M/S.

After re-connecting the line you then bleed the proportioning valve, rear caliper, and then front caliper.  With a well functioning master cylinder it only took about 20 minutes to have all bubbles in the system disappear and be rewarded by a nice firm pedal!!  Whew!

A little YouTube video for proof.  :)

I checked the carbs over and found them to be in exceptional condition.  There was no corrosion  from long term fuel exposure.  I just gave them a light cleaning and installed them and the throttle and fast idle cables today.

Having a 2nd unrestored 1000S for a reference bible has been an invaluable resource for the rejuvenation of the Sparklehorse 1000S.   I almost feel guilty about it.

The eagerly awaited center stand was delivered today!   I am stoked!

It obviously sat on a shelf for a LONG time.

I also bought a new set of springs and foot rubber that they had is stock for the stand.

This was a huge event for the 1000S!

jdgretz - Yeah, know what you mean. There were only like sixty or seventy in the USA originally (wonder how many are left?) and he's got TWO of them.

Dave - any news on the seat? I've found a place in England that will make a copy of your cover for about 50 GBP. Here's their non ebay address: oldschool covers <oldschoolcovers@outlook.com>

Staintune!
« Reply #77 on: July 05, 2019, 08:16:30 PM »
I polished the  un-obtainium 1000S Staintunes to my satisfaction.  I didn't want them to look brand new.  If I had wanted that look I would have sent them to a pro.  I am happy with the result.  The level of shine and remaining warts are in keeping with the bike.

The Staintune exhaust system is very well made!  I appreciate the extra pains they took to emboss their muffler clamps.  And check out the flare on each side of the clamp.  This really aids in the ease of sliding on the clamps.  First class!

I have heard they sound great.  I am really looking forward to hearing them this summer.

I've got staintunes on some of the airheads and they sound like stock cans but just slightly louder.

There's an ulterior motive getting you to send the seat cover - I want one too. I'm bad. Make sure they return the original - I'd definitely hang onto it just in case.

I have made a decision regarding the seat.  I am keeping the original cover for these reasons.

1 - It's only original once.

2 - The seat is in great shape except for the tears.

3 - Sending the irreplaceable seat cover off to parts unknown, would worry me to death until its return.

4 - And last but not least - Mark Linkous' butt graced this seat for quite a few miles!  He loved this bike.

I used Gorilla brand "duck" tape.  It sticks like crazy and can always be replaced.

I am calling it good.  Sorry to disappoint, Wirespokes.

I have always wondered what the back story was regarding the light road rash on the left side of the bike.

I have been in touch with Mark Linkous' old riding buddy and he told me the story.   Around 2003 they were riding when it started to rain hard.  They rode to an overpass to park under.  Just before Mark was completely stopped he dumped the bike in the gravel.  Mystery solved!

I decided to spring for one of Greg Benders fabulous wiring harnesses for the 1000S.  My old harness was in fairly good shape, but had a few areas that needed help.

I was reading through Greg's website and he mentioned he was looking for a Series 2 1000S wiring harness to copy as he hadn't had the opportunity yet.  My  harnesses were off the bike, therefore it made complete sense to send it to Greg so has the opportunity to copy it.  I will end up with a more reliable wiring setup for the bike.  Win win I would say.

I started wiring over the weekend.  The workmanship of the harnesses is absolutely top notch!!

Quite a bit to it actually.

I am in the home stretch!

I can't say enough good things about Greg Bender's wiring harnesses - perfection!   Everything worked perfectly right out of the chute.  I am pleased to report that I made no errors during the hookup due in no small part to having a "reference"  1000S a few feet away!

Instruments go in tomorrow.  Then I will add some gas and fire it up!

After a very intense weekend of work the 1000S is on the road and running great.  I hurriedly got it running last night, but tonight I spent some quality time with my  Carbtune Pro and the bike is running even better.   The engine pulls hard!  It doesn't take much time to get up to 90 mph, and it handles very well.  I am stoked!  The only tasks left are doing a bit of fiberglass repair to the housing for the clocks I am thrilled to have gotten from Tom and send the headlight trim ring out for chrome.   This has been a most rewarding project!

It looks immaculate Dave! Congrats with the completion of the project! It is definitely a good feeling getting the bike on the road for the first time!

And great pictures all the way through! Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful job.  That 1000S has always been my favorite.  I doubt I could put the mileage on that like I do on the Norge or Goldwing, but damn, that's a good looking bike.

Thanks for all the nice comments.  I am taking it out on a proper ride for the first time tomorrow.  Looking forward to that!
