CARC Swing Arm Bearing Access
« on: February 11, 2019, 01:29:54 AM »
My Breva 1100 is currently up in the air on my Eazy Rizer jack and I thought while it's there I should take the opportunity to lubricate the swing arm bearings

The Eazy Rizer lifts the bike on the foot pegs and under the sump

So the question is can I remove the swing arm with the bike supported that way or will I have to make other arrangements ?

cheers

You have to make other arrangements.. the side plates/pork chops/footrest hangers have to come off.

I was in there recently on my Norge and had the bike on it's centrestand with a chain block into an overhead beam to support the majority of the weight of the bike.
The centrestand mounting plate will pivot around the one remaining bolt each side due to the weight, if you don't do similar and there'll be trouble.

Thanks  Huzo

I'd just been looking at the parts list to see if the center stand alone was an option but came to the conclusion it wasn't

I'd better get a skyhook on order as I suspect I'll pull the roof of the garage down if I go off the weedy trusses up there!

I'm in bed at the moment so I've only got one hand to draw a mental image..
But if you block up the engine under the sump to support the weight and stabilise the whole thing so it doesn't come crashing down around your ear holes, you just might succeed.

Nevada is still going.  Still amidst a LOTTTTTT of drama in his life but no use in going into it here. He's driving a Slingshot now, no bike.

Skate is still the same.

Both still the same, just older.

Swing arm bearing and shock link service on the Stelvio CARC was done with the bike on its center stand.

Cheers LM60

I'd found that and it in part triggered the initial question.

I suspected that the B11 was different to the Stelvio which appears to be the case, but once I get access I shall use your guide

You're probably right

I think a couple of these @1.7m - that I have

I have to opine that, no matter what kind of lift one uses, and/or how well one supports the lifted whole bike,
pulling off the weight of the rear wheel, caliper, CARC pod, driveshaft, torque arm, and swingarm ...
...will dangerously disrupt the balance dynamics of the remainder.

Not in London and Creswick it didn't.
You see if one was stupid enough, you could crank on the chain block and keep going until the centrestand left the ground and then you'd end up wearing it around your head.
However this does not eventuate because you just bloody well don't, also I have the front wheel clamped in the
front jaws of the scissor lift..
However if one WAS to lift the whole bike, apart from swinging like an unhappily married couple, the thing would wobble every time you put any force on it, but it would not fall over or be "unstable".
Stability is tendency that an object has to return to it's at rest position when displaced by a force, pendulums are examples of this.
Anyhow, to put it another way...
It works.

Pete suggested that he held some concern that the swingarm pin seals would dislodge upon reassembly, especially the brake lever side.
It can and does..
So to that end.
I measured the nominal distance between the seal and inner race and made two aluminium spacers to go between the seal and the race...(one for each side). Make them so there is a few thou' rattle room, or else when you torque up the adjusting collar, the space MAY, squash against the seal. I allowed 25 thou'.
The seal on the gearshift side is no drama because it is pushed against the register upon assembly, but it got one anyway.
The other side seal though, will fallout if you so much as look at it, so suffice to say that when the end of the advancing pin touches it, the seal will fall into the grease space and you won't even know...
The spacer will and does prevent this..

Sounds like a good idea - there's nothing worse that fiddling about for ages trying to do a simple job that with a shim or simple fixture would take minutes
I seem to recall that you have a lathe so did you turn some bar to fit?
I don't have a lathe so could I cut some some ally sheet to do the job?

Jan
Thanks, and the block you have under the sump might be an option for me too. I shall climb under the bike and have a look tonight

Yeah Tris, I do have a lathe but even without one, a neatly cut piece of tube suitably dressed would suffice at a pinch.
All it has to do is sit between the inner race and the seal, so the seal cannot migrate out of it's register on the brake lever side.

Cheers Huzo - the offer is much appreciated :thumb:

Before I call on you though, let me see how I get on making some here

I'm sure if I get 2 meters of tube I should be able to get 2 good 'uns out before I run out of material

Might be a few days though before I get to this as the dash is in bits while I sort the dead LCD out and I need to finish that before staring on a new mission

Thanks again though for the offer
