Waking up 2015 Griso...
« on: July 01, 2020, 01:51:39 PM »
Hello all,

I'll be waking up a friends 2015 Griso. It has been stored properly, no oil or gas, and in a conditioned storage unit. It has been in storage for about 3 years.

Besides getting the thing, dropping a new battery in, putting in the engine oil and gasoline, and giving it a start... any suggestions?

Questions:
-What engine oil is standard on the griso?
-Best to cycle the engine with the engine switched to off, so that oil gets distributed in the engine, yes?
-anything to look out for on these bikes?

Thanks so much!
Richard

The oil is 10W60, 3 LT of it w/no filter change.
Olil film on bearings should still be there.
Need a manual---https://guzzitek.org/gb/ma_us_uk/1200/Griso1200_8V_072008_Atel(GB).pdf

Nice.

Amsoil or standard stuff?

Also, this battery okay? https://www.batterystuff.com/powersports-batteries/YTX20CH-BS.html

Thank you!

I use the Liqui Moly available at NAPPA or on Amazon.  Someone just posted a link to the Motul on Amazon, however, and it was a little cheaper.

https://www.amazon.com/Motul-106144-74-x-Power-10w60/dp/B018EO46CQ/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=motul+10w60&qid=1593630618&sr=8-2

The Yuasa is the the OEM.  I just bought the Motobatt as it was the same price, comes factory sealed, and has the extra terminals.  250 vs 270 CCA however.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Motobatt-MBTX16U-Replaces-Yuasa-YTX16BS-YTX16BS1-YTX20ABS-YTX20CHBS/124168136137?hash=item1ce8ff65c9:g:Ez8AAOSwLu5epw4n

I use Mobil1 75w90 in both the tranny and the rear drive even though the manual has a different spec.
Can't hurt to check the valve clearances since it's easy to do.
If you have a service indicator or anything after you get things going then you will need the service code (12425).
You will need to reset the clock.

Amsoil all the way! They have 15/60 for Indian/Victory which I use (2016 Eldo) and they have 10/60 dirt bike oil. Either one will be fine. I have used Amsoil for over 20 years and I have never had any kind of engine failure.

No kiddin' When did they come out with the 15/60? I've been waiting on them to come out with something like that.

low miles...

Question for youi all... considering it was prepared for storage by a guzzi dealer, do you think they would have left in the tranny gear bevel box oil? or is it likely that I need to fill that up to?

Going to visit it soon! Wish me luck...

I can’t imagine any reason to drain for storage. Same goes for the motor oil, why would you drain that to store the bike?

This would be a good time to get the owner to round up both of his keys, and make sure he knows or can find the user code. (If he can produce two keys, OR the code, he will be able to re-establish two coded keys and a user code by following instructions in the owner's manual.)

It would also be a good time to grease the swing-arm linkage and rear shock, and maybe the steering head bearings.

Good advice right there, mine had just the shipping grease in the bearings.

Helllllooooo...

Soooo. GRISO WOKE UP! 2015 1200 SE.... it is sooooo beautiful.

A few questions, mainly about the Oil Level, but also the clutch....

OIL LEVEL:

I first check the very hard to read dipstick, and there was oil on it... It was hard to read how much. It was difficult for me to read, and I thought it was just the oil that had drained from the heads or something as it sat in storage for 4 years...

I put in 3 Liters of the Motul 10w60.

I put in a new battery and air in the tires, gas... It started up and idled just fine. At first the kickstand switch light was on and I fiddled with the wires that led to the kickstand and it allowed me to put the bike in gear. Off I went!

On the 5 mile ride home, it rode pretty much fine. However the red oil light would come on a few times when near or at idle. Once moving it was fine. I put in exactly 3L. Should I put in more?

Could there have been a chance I overfilled it?

CLUTCH:

According to the owner, the last time he got it serviced the mechanic said he needs a new clutch.... at 4000 Miles! Riding the thing, it seems the clutch doesn't engage until the lever is nearly all the way out. Is this just an adjustment to the cable? Or is this a fluke and the clutch needs to be replaced?

Thanks all!
Super excited!!!

The oil light will only come on if there is low pressure I believe.

1.  Follow the oil check procedure in the manual:  https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2jFtQYegrtubXZoTFRQSWJGSjQ/edit

It's on page 139-140.  The bike needs to run first then while upright (not on the sidestand) pull the stick, wipe and set it in unscrewed to check.  Yeh those lines are little tough to read especially with new oil but a flashlight can help.

2.  If the oil level is good and the light is coming on I'd suspect the pressure switch.  The stock ones aren't very good but you can pick one up at Autozone for about $12 or so.

3.  You adjust the clutch via the lever.  Page 98. Mine is set on 4 for reference.

Thanks!

The clutch level adjustment seems to only adjust the location of the lever relative to the handlebar...

... the clutch is a little strange, in that I pull it all the way into the handlebar to disengage, and when releasing the clutch lever nothing happens for the first 95% of travel, and only at the very end does it engage and start moving...

... is this a clutch cable adjustment? or....

thanks,
r.

ah! its a hydraulic clutch!

but still, why is the clutch only engaging in the last little bit of lever travel?

thanks,

With regard to oil light coming on, double check that it is indeed a 2015 model.
I believe that earlier years some bikes had issues with the sump spacer gasket blowing  out internaly between the spacer and the block and known to have destroyed motors due to oil pressure loss. Remedy is to replace with thicker updated gasket. (PN  GU01003650)
2015 on use the one piece sump same as Cali 1400 and different internal plumbing so weren't subject to that problem.
Just a heads up.

Yeh that's always a possibility with a Guzzi!  A 2015 may not be a 2015 :)

Here's the thread on the gasket:  https://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=87885.0

I've never seen the lights so I never bothered with it on my 2011.

That clutch doesn't sound right.  I'd ask the fellows over at the Ghetto

I see the gasket issue thread, thank you. And Pete, you have helped me through over 20 years of guzzi love, thank you!!!!

Where to purchase the thicker gasket?

And in the meantime.... since I only put in 3L of oil (because I didn't change the oil filter), should I put in maybe .25L more to see if the light goes off?

Thanks,
Richard

Clutch- first thing I would do is bleed it....actually, change fluid while you bleed it.

The bikes of this vintage do not have a clutch 'adjustment' of sorts. There is a rod that goes through the trans that can be of variable length. You don't need to change it if it isn't slipping under hard loading.

My stelvio service manual lists these rods. I can't imagine yours is much different. I would read the station service manual on the trans rebuild to get an idea of the parts involved with the clutch (bleeding, master, slave, etc):
