2013 v7 special won't idle when cold
« on: September 19, 2019, 06:31:27 AM »
Bike is stock. Always have to warm it up before taking off or it dies, which is normal for a factory v7. Just recently it won't stay running when "cold". Would idle up at start but then idle down and die. Won't restart without some throttle either. I can keep it running by playing with the throttle and once it warms up It's fine. Starting to miss that choke cable.

Beetle's map will take care of the cold stalling and probably help with the idle too.  I'd take a look at the valves, plugs and plug caps.  If they are out of spec or (in the case of the plug caps) failing they just make the minor issues that much worse.

What he says. Also ensure the air filter is clean (replace it) and that there's no oil overflow to the airbox. V7's seem to prefer good air.

Must have been bad gas. Problem went away on it's own.

So.....only acts up if its below around 75 degrees.   Thought it took care of itself but it was around 80 when it worked fine. Went for a ride the other evening and it was 73 out and wouldnt idle.

I'll mention it again...Beetle map will solve the problem.  It's a known issue with the OEM mapping.

I'm aware the map makes it better. I have put 16k miles on this bike in 3 years and have never had this issue. Is my temp sensor going bad?

Nothing against a Beetle map. My 2013 Stone has none, it has the last iteration of the standard map. And I can start the engine in any temperature between - 8°C and +38°C, it idles, and after putting on the gloves I can ride without any problem. I think the bike in question has a small issure that should be mended before the map is exchanged. I would take a look on the Lambda probes first (I know similar issues from cars). There is a whole chapter that describes the test procedures of the probes in the shop manual.

So it seems that a valve adjustment has solved the issue. Intake valves weren't to far off but the exhaust was .003, should be .008

my old air head needed the valves adjusted religiously at 2500 miles or i would get the same problem.  of course modern bikes with modern metalurgy allow far longer intervals but it is still the simple things isn't it.
