Guzzi went down on the BRP today
« on: September 26, 2020, 06:44:53 PM »
Was there by chance one of you guys on the BRP(blue ridge parkway) today?
Some of my riding Pals and myself did a 300 mile loop through the Smokies. Part of the run was on the BRP. We stopped at a scenic overlook for a break and a couple of bikes come from the other direction. They were several yards above us so we were not paying much attention to them because bikes were coming and going The whole time. All of a sudden we heard a loud thud crash sound, that only a motorcycle makes. We immediately looked in that direction to see a bike on its side. The rider immediately began crawling from under the bike and his buddy was helping him up. We decided not to approach them, figured since he was ok we didn’t want to add to the embarrassment he could have been feeling. Anyhow, after several minutes they both mounted and started out, going by us.
The bike that fell was a Guzzi. I’m not to good at identifying the non cruiser models but it was not too sporty looking, like a crouch rocket but it did have an upswept exhaust system. The rider seemed to be ok and we didn’t see any obvious bad damage.
I hope it wasn’t any of our guys, just checking out of concern for him and the goose.

I'd never hear that before, but like it! Crouch Rocket.   :thumb:

No, don't know who that might have been - I'm three thousand miles to the west, but glad he was ok.

It's the easiest thing in the world to glance to side for just a second, even a fraction of a second, and have the bike go "off line" in that direction too far to catch it in a turn and bang!  lowside time ... Glad he was OK.

Isn't the speed limit something ridiculous, like 35, on the brp?

45 and the park rangers gives a little lead way, I emphasize a little as I have seen them stop bikes and cars stopped and the ranger walking back with paper in hand. Actually it’s too much beautiful scenery to speed by and not enjoy.

Seth,

Yep, it's slow. But those are just suggestions aren't they?  I managed to roll through with license in tact! Some of the vistas are spectacular!

only in busy sections (at popular stops like Mt Mitchell/ Craggy Gardens area or the WNC nature Center or Folk Art Center or thru Roanoke & Asheville), it's 45 mostly in the mountains, easy to run about 55-60 which is perfect speed for the road and sight lines IMHO. speed limits barely/lightly enforced.

The one up in VA that picks up where the BRP ends is 35mph the whole way, and it is heavily enforced (Skyline Drive)

Sorry to hear anyone going down.

The BRP is a ride not to be rushed because of the Scenery.  The are plenty of roads in those mountains with 55 mph limits that will entertain you.  If you need more, go to a track day.

This explains my confusion. My brother and I drove Skyline Drive in my TR4 in the summer of '72 I think.

Love the rocker covers on the Aerolario Chuck.  Quite different from the usual generic run-o-the-mill 750's.

Last time I heard the sound of a Breva crash, I was leading a ride.  We were crawling thru a small town and a bicycle came down a hill and crossed the street  “taking out” the Breva that was behind me.  No one hurt, just a lot of pride and scratches.

Six of us are heading down that way to do BRP, Deals Gap and more.  I am a cable cutter and I get dozens of stations that run all sorts of syndicated stuff.  They show the motorcycle show "Free Ride" and i recorded the episode on BRP for my buddies. It's kinda cheesey and the bike stuff's dated, but it does right by the road.  Here's the YouTube link - enjoy.
