This was my FIRST BMW...
« on: October 23, 2021, 08:09:53 AM »
Back in 1982, except in "UPS Brown" color, and with matching Windjammer fairing and Windjammer wedge shaped hard bags. :thumb:

I put >50,000 miles on that bike, with no issues other than tires and a battery... :thumb:  :boozing:

You never forget your first JJ.  Mine was a 1983 R100CS I bought for $2500 with 3500 miles on it.  It was sitting in a Kawasaki dealership with the horn wire caught in the timing cover causing a short. It seemed so strange at the time but I grew to love it very quickly.

Mine was crashed in Nov. of 1982..and the frame was "bent" so I had to total it.  With the insurance money, I then bought a brand new 1983 BMW R80RT...another favorite...and my first *NEW* BMW!
It was a really good bike...  :thumb: :boozing:

JJ ..... in the spirit of this 'my first BMW' theme ......

Well, guys and gals ...... my first Beemer wasn't a flat twin, but a first year edition of the K bikes to be sold in the USA ..... a 1985 K100RS.

It was a leftover, purchased in March of 1986.

I'd gotten back into biking with a 1983 Virago, but while walking to a customer meeting in downtown Pittsburgh, I passed a BMW the likes of which I'd never seen.  A few weeks later, I owned my first K bike.

They had their issues, mostly heat management.  Aside from that, I loved this bike.  Put 65,000 miles on in three + years, and traded it on another K RS.

Pic quality is horrible  ....... I retrieved this photo from a Kodak Disk camera found in a tankbag I no longer used.

I still remember seeing a pearl white K100 in a dealership in NJ while riding my R bike cross country. It was simply gorgeous.  Yours was a great looking bike.

Admittedly, K bikes were an addiction!  Here was my 2nd K100RS, a 1989 model with ABS.

Ann Arbor to BRP in 1991

A K75S was sandwiched between the '85 and '89.  Followed up with 1993 K1100LT which was gone by the following year, to be replaced with a 1993 K1100RS.  I think the last of my flying bricks was the best, a 1999 K1200RS.

Your a lucky man JJ, that BMW was the top of the pack in my opinion back then and many of the marquee’s models are equal to the task today. I could only dream of owning such a bike back then. It had to wait until 2005 before I could straddle a Beemer.
You sure have owned some fine machines in your time. I am curious to know how you rate your GL1000 that you have spoken of to the BMW?
I have a soft spot for the 75-77 GL1000’s.

Thanks for your kind words, Jim!  :thumb:

My '78 GL1000 was low slung, and FAST, but heavy...More of a straight line touring bike vs. a canyon carver...

My R75/6 and my R80RT were not very fast, but fast enough, and they were light and nimble..and a pleasure to ride in the twisties...

They were two completely different bikes, but I had fun with all of them! :thumb:   :boozing:

Yup, I’m with the K-bike crowd . 85 K100 , Std. The second week I had it got stopped 4 speeding . As the officer is handing me the citation & license back he remarks “If you can afford that bike you can afford this ticket” !

Ironically, and back in day, I drove a 1993 BMW 325is, just like this white one, and got the same ticket and speech from a DPS officer in Scottsdale, AZ:    “If you can afford that CAR.... you can afford this ticket!!"

I was once fortunate enough to have a job that offered me a company bike instead of a car. Any bike you like they said.

Walked into my local BMW dealer with the intention of buying an R80 for my long commute into London. Told the shiny suited salesman I was looking to buy a company bike and he basically looked me up and down (I was still punky back then), laughed at me and removed my arse out of the dealer.

I went down the road a few miles and ordered a brand new Moto Guzzi California III.

So I never did get to be a BMW owner.
Back on a Guzzi again. 1100i Cali.

Thanks for the comparison, interesting as I have only ridden an early Wing but not an airhead BMW. I still like the GL 1000 over all later Wing models.

I got pulled over in California just north west of Death Valley back in 2008 on my R1150RT going about 35 mph over and the Trooper was pissed, I got the if you can afford a BMW speech…. Then on my insurance pink card he saw I had a 1976 XT500 registered as well and we got into a long conversation comparing his XR500 to the Yamaha. I thought I had got off with a warning but nope, still got a whopping $500+ ticket, I deserved it and he had threatened to impound my bike for 24 hrs so I guess I got off easy.
