2017 V9 Roamer plug gap
« on: May 08, 2021, 07:49:05 AM »
Afternoon All

Could someone confirm what the plug gap should be on 2017 V9 Roamer please?

The manual I have says 24 to 27 thou, but the plugs on the bike are reading 35 thou

Given that the bike has only done a few thousand miles since a service by a main dealer before I bought it, you would hope that they got it right!!

Before I sort it out, I want to check that the manual is right before I blame the dealer

Cheers

Is it reasonable to expect a dealer to check the plug gap?
I tend to think that’s a bit over the top.   Why would you think the manual would be wrong?

Does anyone change the plug gap these days like we used to?
I just put the plugs in and assume the plug manufacturer have it right.

IMO it's good practice to check plug gaps before fitting

Because MG have a bit of a reputation for iffy manuals. I found a second MGref in the user book that says 0.9mm or 1.98 inches.

I'd also just found the NGK ref

Maybe 0.9 35 thou is right!!!

I gap every plug, right out of the box. Way too wide of gap for Loops and early Tontis. Have to open them up for Mom's pickup.

Agreed.  Good idea to check gaps, they don’t come from the factory gaped for every application.

OK I had better smarten up then. Funny thing I carry a set of feelers in the tool kit too.

I prefer this type of gauge for gapping plugs:

I'll play the devils advocate here , how was it running ? . Peter

Slightly "fluffly" especially when cold so decided to check the simple/obvious

However, with a bit more research and a think, I've come to a conclusion

1) The NGK CPR8EB-9 plug is a "special" that comes from NGK gapped to 0.9mm (36 thou)
2) As far as I can see Moto Guzzi fit this plug from new

Therefore, I suggest that its HIGHLY unlikely that Moto Guzzi employ a 1st year apprentice in the engine shop to re-gap the new plugs supplied by NGK at 0.9mm down to 0.6-0.7mm (24 to 27 thou) before they fit them

I'm assuming that the 0.6-0.7mm in the manual is an error and shall work with the 0.9mm

Thanks for the input

So now I find after running without gapping new plugs for years.
I set the Loop plugs to 0.6 as per the manual now the talk is 0.9 which was probably closer to the ungapped setting.
What's it supposed to be for a loop?

Loops or models w/points I set at .024", newer models or ECU, electronic ignitions, high output coils, I set at .028".  This is like an oil thread, bend over, how big is your crack. (meant to be humor).

That's the thing Steve,  I RTFM and this thread wouldn't even exist if MG were capable of putting the same number in 2 of their own documents

To make things worse they seem to have done copy and paste from the V9 to the V7iii and have the same error

:violent1::violent1::violent1:

Moving on though, and taking on board the points raised previously, if I were to reduce the gap to 0.6/0.7 is there any risk to the engine apart from a miss fire for example?

Yes, Guzzi is known for wrong info in their books. Usually they just use the last models stuff. They came out w/V7 classic in 07 or 8 and they stated 4 & 6 for Heron heads(wrong) and took them till 2011 before they came from factory loose enough to break in the engine. I guess they have no info or tech bullitans from the 70's. They did same thing then and corrected it. Maybe they have no real engineers, just computer software.

.023" for Loops, what NGK recommends for the application.
