Question re: T3 style console hole
« on: June 01, 2021, 12:35:23 PM »
Looking for some guidance here. I'm installing my instruments into an MG Cycle repro console.

I'm doing this from scratch, The bike is an '83 SP1000 and it didn't come with the original console, fairings , etc,  and I've decided to go for the standard bike look.

So to my question: There is an almost rectangular hole in the bottom of the console for (I assume) passing the wiring into the console. See the pic below.

How is this hole sealed around the wiring? Is there a grommet or a boot?

I've looked at the T3 parts diagram but I don't see a grommet. And I've not been able to find a pic that would show what's what around the console bottom.

Any suggestions for a DIY seal?

The short answer is there is no seal there, but there is a some what triangular plate with 2 allen head screws that is centered on the bottom side between the tach and speedo and it half covers that rectangular hole. The wires (for the indicator bulbs) disappear up into the triangular piece. I've driven in some torrential rains and never noticed any problem.

I converted my 81-CX to the same clock holder and have never had a problem with the wires and I've also ridden through some driving rain without issue.

Thanks. In the parts diagram, I see an odd shaped plate bolted to the handle bar clamps, I think that's what you mean. And now that I think about it, the opening is partly shielded from spray by the headlight.

With a fairing you could have the instruments buck nekkid!

BTW, I like your bead breaker "tool"- I'm going to make one of those.

Even without a fairing, I don't think it would be an issue. Of course it would be an experiment, and under the right rain conditions it could be a problem over a long period of time. I assumed you were keeping the SP fairing.

That bead breaker works really well for very little money.
