2017 V7III Slightly Vibey Handlebars?
« on: March 21, 2019, 10:52:58 AM »
I bought a new V7III last spring but only have 200 miles on the bike for a bunch of reasons I won't bore you with. I took the bike out for the first time since November on Tuesday and was rewarded with a CEL on the instrument cluster.  I have a separate thread on that.

The only other thing I noticed about the bike was that there were noticeable vibes at the handlebars and even foot pegs.  The vibes aren't bad enough to irritate me but I can't recall if the bike has always been that way.

My comparison is a Honda Africa Twin which is turbine smooth.  I don't mind the V7III vibrating as long as it is normal.  But I am trying to diagnose why the amber light is on the dash and wonder if vibrations are NOT normal and what they may be indicative of if that is the case.  My dealer is 300 miles away and a quick trip to them to be told it is just fine simply won't work; unless I have to.

As I said in the other thread you need to pull the code and find out.

As for how much vibey is normal, that can't be determined over the internet, it just can't. Hell to some extent even if you had two side-by-side it might not be easy to tell. Bottom line, assuming you're not lugging it (and to some extent you HAVE to lug it during break-in because that dumb shift light is set abnormally low for break-in) one man's vibey is another man's butter smooth. It's too subjective.

Yes both our MkI and MkIII V7's vibrate a bit.

I wouldn't compare them to a Honda...but then again it would take a lot of persuasion to get me to buy another Honda.

it is common for twins of this type to become smoother through break-in.  i would avoid judgment until at least 5000 miles.  in regard to your light, you should be needing a trip to the dealer for the first service so they could check it out then.

It's not annoying but my v7iii with approx 250 miles definitely has some vibes.  With my 2013 v7i, I felt it smoothed out a lot after the 600 mi service which did the valves.

Mine is mirror fuzzing vibey, especially at lower revs and my Vespa is nearly the same, which I don't mind a bit. :bike-037:

On my V7iii, I noted major improvements from say mile 50 to mile 250 ... as in, getting smoother.  Then even better (smaller amounts) between 250 miles to 1000 miles.  From 1000-2500 miles can't say I've noticed it smoothing out any.

Second, I got a Beatle map for it and that really helped it run smoother as well.

It ain't Honda smooth ... thanks goodness.

did u drain the gas tank and put some fresh stuff in. that crappy old stuff might be just enough to make it strain a bit. don't run it under 3500 rpm even though new. 4-4500 is much better.

V7iii Special. I haven’t noticed the handlebars too much although mine are cut down slightly when I went with bar end mirrors. However, in my early days with the bike I was aware of a lot of vibration in the foot pegs. Only because I had them lying around, I tried a set of Breva pegs. My purpose was really that they seemed a little lower than the stockers (it’s probably only in my head) but they seem to vibrate less as well.

+1

You said the bike has been sitting and if you didn't use gas stabilizer (and maybe even if you did) you'll have phase separation with a good amount of water in the bottom of the tank. Could also explain your CEL. Do as the man says and drain the old gas out and fill with nice fresh hi-octane go juice. You and your bike will both be happier. Also concur with the RPM statement - my V7 III is much smoother once you get over 4K.

Late response.  The fuel was stabilized prior to the four month siesta.  I have more than one bike and none of the others have hiccuped in any way.  We got into quite a bit of rain the past couple weeks so I'll see about siphoning some fuel out of the tank and dumping in some fresh ethanol free premium.

The one thing I do miss about carbureted engines is just being able o disconnect the fuel line from the petcock and drain the tank.

Op,

I was thinking about you the other day.

We're just breaking-in Jenn's new V7IIID and we're only up to about 450 miles so far, about half of them for each of us.

I was on it last and noticed that there's a perceptible difference in smoothness at this point between 5th and 6th gear at the lower end of the rpm range.

I believe that I've sleuthed from the shift light (currently set at 4500 rpm for break-in) that 4500 rpm = (~+/- 2-3 mph)

30 (27) in 1st
35 in 2nd
50 (48) in 3rd
60 in 4th
70 (68) in 5th
76 in 6th

(#) = actual according to Jay's special.

The easy way to think about it is ~ 30/40/50/60/70/75

And as such you don't want to be shifting much earlier than any of those marks.

Anyway, I find that IF I shift into 6th much below 70 then there's noticeable vibration in the bars that wasn't there in 5th.

You almost certainly don't want to be in 6th as low as say 60.

Any chance that's part of what you've noticed?
