Years ago when I rode year around in Colo I had a pair of ski mittens. They were really warm. They had fleece on the back which I think was more for wiping snow off goggles rather than insulation purposes but it couldn't have hurt.

I spent an entire Michigan winter riding 27 miles to work and home on a sportster. I never missed a day when the roads were clear. I found that down to freezing, cross-country ski gloves were great, and survivable to about 20*. I used regular ski mittens when it was colder than that, although they felt weird. That was top-end gear in 1991, probably $80+ per pair.
Something wistful and amusing, yet poignant.
