I assume the R60 is pre 1970.

They should know the answer.
In the short term remove the fill bolt and remove some oil to get it just below the fill hole.
Check drive shaft oil level.
If it is the slow leak it should be good for many miles before oil is pushed out again.
Check again when changing engine oil.

All on the road, going nowhere in particular.

Heat the housing several hundred degrees (barbecue grille works okay.
The fixed axle spacer will slide out of the casting.
(So will a few other parts.)
This leaves the "hidden" seal exposed for easy removal and replacement.
Warm the casting and freeze the spacer and it will drop in.

Not sure. A good examination should reveal any secrets.
A reasonable Airheads group will know for sure.
Never had to redo any BMW final drive beyond '66.

Thanks Ron,I looked at the book and it covers BMWs from 1970 so the prior models may well be different, thanks for the warning.

Completely new bike in 1970. That is the year the /5's came out replacing the /2's. I got one of the very first R75/5's. It was a good bike, the factory mad some changes after. Final drive ratio for one, frame length was another. Mine was over geared.
