I have listened very carefully to my tape of Etta James' "I'd rather go blind" and I believe that Beyonce did a superior job of it in the film "Cadillac Records".
It is always hard to tell whether you are hearing a better singer or better sound engineering when making these comparisons.
The Beyonce track is a lot "cleaner".

I'll still take Etta's version, call me nostalgic. Personally I'd prefer Davina and the Vagabonds version of "I'd rather go blind" over Beyoncé

Okay. I'll grant you that she has a big voice but so do a million others. A big voice empty of soul or emotion.

Here is the real deal. Watch this and then ask yourself if they are even close to being in the same league.

And here is Janis at her very best (in my opinion) at Monterey Pop.

No one was suggesting that Melanie is Janis , two different voices , and Janis was very young , not to mention that her voice was altered by the consumption of alcohol . But to say Melanie has no soul is silly . How many singers would even attempt this song , anyone here ? Uh , didn't think so . Kind of like comparing Stevie Ray to Jimi , a useless exercise . Besides , Cry Baby was first recorded in 1963 , JJ was just reinterpreting the song herself .

Check out Leon Bridges.  Also, the Arcs.  So much good music these days.  But nobody
like Arthur Alexander.
