We are a 1/4 of a mile from the railroad tracks but in the last year the trains are few and frequent.  We would regularly see coal and armament passing by but no longer on these tracks.

How about my bike from a moving train?

The Joy Line Railroad (and Harpers Ferry Toy Train Museum), Harpers Ferry, WV.

Plus, moving train from my bike:
Norfolk Southern headed south at Burhans Blvd. in Hagerstown, MD:

CSX headed north and the corner of Burhans Blvd. and W. Washington St., also Hagerstown.

Speaking of Washington: New Tag: A park, road, building, etc. named in honor of 'ol George.

Built in 1827, the original tower was the first monument dedicated to George Washington to be completed.[5] The Washington Monument in Baltimore was completed two years later, although it had been started considerably earlier in 1815. The famous Washington Monument in the District of Columbia was not completed until 1885.

The dry-laid stone tower was built on July 4, 1827, by the citizens of Boonsboro who marched to the site en masse after assembling in the town square at 7 a.m. At the end of that day, the tower stood at 15 feet (4.6 m) high on a base 54 feet (16 m) in circumference. Later that year, "after the busy season", workmen returned to complete the tower to a height of 30 feet (9.1 m).[6]

I have video! I'll post a link as soon as I upload it somewhere.

Owned and operated by Chris Wallich, son of Robert who started it back around '69-'70. My father used to make alterations and repairs to the rolling stock and other equipment for him. We (dad, brother Karl and myself) built a replica of the "Toonerville Trolley" for him in '72. We "supersized" dimensions from the scale model:

Most of the work was altering amusement park trains from 16" gauge down to 12" gauge. One I remember clearly was the Ford Model A powered streamliner. At idle in first gear, it was still too fast.

When Robert Wallich started the railroad back in '70, the only locomotive was a Cagney live steam locomotive. But, just as full scale railroads found out decades before, steam propulsion is a lot of work. Not to mention, boiler inspections and high liability insurance premiums. It was soon replaced by one that looked like a steamer, but had a 12 hp Briggs & Stratton engine in it. I remember seeing the Cagney there when my father started doing work for him in '72, but it was sold a few years later.

One of these days, I'm going to make the trip down to Leakin Park near Baltimore to check out the Chesapeake & Allegheny Live Steamers operation. http://calslivesteam.org/index.htm

Yes, there's two built to look like an EMD F7 in the car barns, powered by Wisconsin V4s. They also have a one-person track speeder powered by a B&S 3 hp engine. More photos:

I thought about riding to Washington Indiana, but it would have been a boring interstate trip in Indiana. I'll admit it, the California Canyons have made me a bit jaded about riding around here.

I've got a couple of building signs and of course the more interesting one was painted over before I got there which is a bummer. The whole building was covered with an interesting sign from what use to be a tailor shop.

Just a couple of more because I have them:

For the tag, it's either or on this.  A boat, ship, tug boat or a John boat.

Or a converted horse barn or stable.

This particular one was the horse barn for the local police department.

These are mule statues in Jasper, AL placed in homage to the mining history of Walker County. There are over 20 of them throughout downtown.

Man, that's one classy looking paint job.  Sorry, I didn't mean to rush you but I was out looking for covered bridges and hoped to get a new tag in the process.

That's a good tag.  I took the long way home in the hopes of finding a high school mascot or somesuch but no luck.  Not many animal mascots in rural West Virginia.

I haven't been anywhere very much this year.. and when I do, it's normally on a bagger to go to the farm store or something like that. I'd almost forgotten what a stonkin motorcycle the Mighty Scura is..

For the tag.. artesian wells are findable around here. If they're not all that common elsewhere, I'll come up with something else..

Thanks!  I wish the paint around the fill cap wasn't bubbling/peeling. It would be perfect then.  You didn't rush me, I was out for a nice Sunday ride just going where the front wheel took me.

An artesian well is a water well that doesn't require a pump to bring water to the surface; this occurs when there is enough pressure in the aquifer. Same thing as a "spring"?

Springs and Artesian Wells
Springs are often confused with flowing artesian wells. An artesian well is a hole or boring that has been drilled into a water-bearing formation or "aquifer" that is under pressure. The water in an artesian well rises above the top of the aquifer (water-bearing formation) until the pressure is equalized. In a flowing artesian well, the water rises above the ground surface and the water flows out of the well casing to equalize the pressure.

Artesian Springs
Occur when the groundwater, under pressure, finds its way to the land surface (Fig. 1).

artesian springs diagram Fig. 1

The spring flows because the pressure in the aquifer (water bearing soil or rock), which is covered by a confining layer (clay or other impervious material), is greater than atmospheric pressure at the land. A spring is formed when the water reaches the surface through a fracture or porous layer. These types of springs usually occur along faults (a fracture in the earth), or in areas of great topographic relief such as cliffs or valleys.

Gravity Springs
Are formed by water soaking into the ground until the water encounters a confining layer that will not let the water seep further down (Fig. 2). The water then flows across the top of the confining layer until it reaches the ground surface. Examples of gravity springs are springs found in hillsides or cliffs. The springs along the north shore of Lake Superior and along the Mississippi and St. Croix River Valleys are generally of this type.

I can't think of an artesian well near me either.
