Guzzi EV porn and a gas cap problem
« on: July 19, 2021, 12:21:36 PM »
So the new to me 2001 California EV, got trailered home from Delaware last night. Spent some time this morning doing a quick cleanup. Aside from the poor quality chrome, she came out pretty spiffy. Note the painters tape holding the non locking gas cap on.

The gas cap just sits in place, but the key does not turn to lock it. I pulled it apart, and lubricated the mating surfaces, but still cannot get it to function correctly.

That’s an on going issue with these models ad my 02 Stone suffered the problem.
You can sand down the green plastic material to increase the play and reduce friction and see if that helps, it did mine. I think there is also a replacement cap that some have used.
I’m sure others will shout out assistance shortly.

By the way, beautiful bike👍

Sure that's the right key for the gas cap (a new to you bike)?

I had a problem with mine years ago. I think the plastic distorted. I called Harper's for a new metal one.   1-816-697-3411

You beat me to the same question. Right key???

Also if you need a replacement with a matching key and don't mind used. Give Guzzi Classics a call. I think he has some.

You don't sand down the green plastic shown. If you take it apart there is a pale green disk that needs to be made smaller to stop binding up the mechanism. I used a dremmel with a grinding stone point.

If I remember correctly, when the gas cap is disassembled by driving the pin out of it, the parts have to be reoriented correctly when its going back together - it can go back together two ways -  or the key wont turn.

If it isn't the correct key you can take both parts to a local locksmith and he can make the lock fit the key (or work with that key).  Which ever is the correct way to say it.  At least the local locksmith did it for me here in Michigan.

I had mine swell twice, THEN I cut down and polished the cast metal piece in the middle. That was 13yrs ago, issue never came back.

Buy the all metal assembly from MG Cycle. Assuming yours is keyed to the bike, just swap the lock cylinder over and be done with it. That's what I did until I bought Brenton's keyless replacement.

Take a pocketknife to the plastic and scrape off a little clearance in the mechanism.  Keep playing with key until it starts to unlatch.  You'll be able to see where it binds up, it only takes a little bit.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

There are two green plastic parts, the one that holds the pin.

The other, large green plastic, is the one that interfaces with the  cast metal part.

Is this the one that should be sanded down??

The green plastic, near the rubber seal, needs sanded down. You need to sand it where it presses into the metal cylinder. Or as Steve mentioned, your can grind the metal cylinder. Keep the photos handy to reassemble it.

Thanks FG I should have made that a little more specific as I figured that it would be understood that the point of friction in the cap is what needs sanding. I had to do mine and it worked fine after a little sandpaper work👍

Want to send a shout out to John Henry. We spoke earlier today, and he clarified exactly what part to sand off material. After a few minutes of scraping and sanding, the parts slipped together very smoothly. After buttoning everything up, the cap works fine.

Thanks to all of the good advice here.

On a tangential note, my EV gas tank holds a vacuum after a long ride.  Sometimes for over 24 hours.  When I open the gas cap I can hear the air rush in.  Is there something wrong with my cap, overflow line, or what ?

With the gas cap lock issue resolved, I have been able to put about 250 miles on this machine, so here is my first impression of the California EV. Its my first”cruiser” style bike.

The bike makes more than enough power, for my needs, and has gobs of torque. Rolling at 55 mph in top gear, shows about 2750 rpm. Feels like it’s just loafing along.

I’m slowly acclimating  to the heel and toe shifting technique, and finding the gearbox is pretty tight, as if somewhere along the line, it was shimmed.

If there are any drawbacks so far, it is the seat. Made me want to get off after 70 or 80 miles. I’ll start with a sheepskin cover, to see if it helps.

Back in the 80’s, I had a 79 G5, and this EV has a similar feel, albeit, more powerful brakes and motor.

John, if you plan to run 55-60mph, use 4th. You probably will hear people say 3rd, I prefer 4th. If your running 70mph, and just need to drop down to 55mph and then back up to 70mph, 5th is fine.
