Roundhead breather upgrade...Convert
« on: June 26, 2023, 05:14:04 PM »
Hello Folks, I decided to get rid of the awful Convert airbox/filter and installed K&N pods. I also installed one of the breathers MG cycle sells for the old V 7 sport, and since that change ,I noticed I get a bit more oil out of the breather hose than I used to with the stock set up. I made a small" catch can" out of  a pill bottle to see how much oil accumulates. after about a half our ride, at highway speeds, I get about an ounce of oil in the catch can. I think thats a bit too much. Any suggestions?  How about substituting a ball valve for the flapper?
Thanks
Rick

That would be a good modification just something to follow up on the V7 sport air box excuse me breathe the Box has a flapper valve on the inside it's sometimes gets stuck some people take it completely out if you're using this these seven sport bre the Box and it does have the flapper valve in make sure you don't have the Breather attachment inside the big pipe see their ball with a round hole or a ball with a square hole you can't have two at the same time if you take one out I would suggest take the one out of the the end of the crankcase and make sure your oil level is current not overfilled it's only takes three quarts for running a little bit more if you change the filter and you should be okay
Others will be chimed in with their suggestions as a footnote I run the stock air box on my convert and I don't have any other problems with oil coming through the Breather however I did take the Breather assembly out of the pipe from the crankcase and there was a modification years ago that inside the you don't have it anymore but on the stock air box the oil breather part of it the pipe that came into the Breather assembly was a t and apparently that wasn't Scavenging enough so the modification was to cut the T where the two pieces meet cut it off so you just had the straight pipe coming in as I said others will chime in good luck

My Convert had the "ball valve" in the larger diameter tube that comes off the top of the crankcase, I removed that, when I installed the V 7 breather. Would I have been better off leaving the ball valve in the tube, and disabling the flapper inside the breather box?

A sump spacer or deep sump is good thing IMO. I run a "Le Mans" breather with the flapper-valve still intact (and no ball-type valve of course).

It looks just like what you have. Has a spigot w/2 hoses on it for valve covers.
I would not add any oil & see if it stops 1/2 way down the stick before making any mods.
They usually puke out till comfortable w/space in block. All mine run 1/2 way down stick.

What Steve wrote - V7 Sport/850-T/850 Le Mans is all the same breather. I run 3 qts. only - any more and the "excess" will be ejected.

Thanks Guys for the info on the breather. Thats what I have. I am going to re check my oil level, and run it at half way on the stick, like Steve says. I poured three quarts in, but you know how it is when pouring oil from a one  gallon container.... its kinda hard to tell exactly  where you are at,from the markings on the side of container.

I have a bit of an obsession with crankcase breathers, mainly because my 900 Monster has a penchant for blow-by so I have fitted larger breather boxes to all of my bikes.

On the LM2, I replaced the OEM Lemans breather with a larger Agostini part but fitted a (customised) Ducati corse style reed valve in line as it is a much larger bore than the Guzzi part. Seems to work fine as I've had no evidence of any oil getting blown out though it maybe overkill?

Thats a very interesting setup Dukedesmo. It looks very clean. Do you also have a sump spacer?

I have a G&G, external filter deep sump and a windage plate, presumably both help with oil control.
