Head's up to Aurora watchers.
« on: September 28, 2017, 09:01:03 AM »
September 28, 2017: the prediction for a major storm to hit is 10 out of 10 on the scale.
Could be a good show. I'm setting a camera up in the yard and leaving it all night... we'll see what transpires.
Rodekyll, hope you have clear skies down there.

How far down can you see this? I'm in Ohio, central (Columbus). Any chance you think?

I'll have to 2-wheel to somewhere darker.  The trike has less than a full compliment of front end part attached right now, and the van died on my last aurora adventure.

But a 10/10 is not to be missed!

Cool site!

My sites indicate that last night was the biggie, unless there's a second wave tonight.  Fairbanks is optimistic.

Hope this isn't too late for others but I'm on west coast time: what I'm reading on different sites is the storm peaked at 02:00-ish this morning Eastern time. Nothing more is expected from what I see....
I'm all kitted up and nothing but stars to shoot...

I have the bike loaded and ready to roll if there's any uptick in the indicators, but right now they seem to be on a gradual decline.

Bust here.  Stayed dark until the clouds rolled in and it rained a little.  I made a stand in a north-facing field until the stars went away.  Civilized lights were a bit more than I like, so I had a graduated neutral density filter on the lens.  Didn't do any shooting though, and got back home just as the rain started, so I didn't get wet.

Coastal fog rolled in here in Los Angeles and we could not see anything.

Don't think the storm was strong enough to push it down to visibility in the lower 48, was it?

Turns out it wasn't a total bust but it certainly was my error in reading the notification. (sorry to all).
I ended up with 1594 images (5 second exposure at 5 frames per second).
About 5 minutes of video for the hours 21:00 to 04:00.
Some good bursts of light but nothing in comparison to 20 hours earlier. The mistake won't happen twice.

This is another example of my theory that good lights happen when it's cloudy wherever I am.

Since the storm was first forecast, it's been cloudy and raining for the first time in months.

Glad to hear you got some pics!  I'm envious!  Will you post some?

I believe in your cloud/event theory too.  I am gifted a clear view more often in winter.
Although it is much less fun standing outside watching then.

Here are 1594 pics... I posted the time-lapse to YouTube. It is really jerky compared to native on my computer so I guess my frame rate doesn't match theirs. If you run the playback at x1.5 or x2 speed it is a little better.
I'll try again with a different codex and/or a slightly higher frame rate at my end.

For now: https://youtu.be/LAEWPpCIwzM

There are some 'Grandma's' walking at around minute 1:30, minute 3:30 to 4 is alright too. And for anyone curious how bright aurora can get... there is a direct hit at minute 1:22.
