A friend stopped by to give me a Christmas gift for having loaned him Max Oxley's book on two-strokes.
In the back of his truck was a 1967 Yamaha Trailmaster, a seized engine and a box of miscellaneous parts... and two "new' old tires.
The bike is all there, all original, and not in terrible shape compared to some I've seen on WG.
He's off to Australia for a month which should give me enough time to learn what I am facing.

Any guidance on approaching the project would be gratefully accepted.
I think that my first step is a photo record and inventory. I don't like electrics so I might be recreating the wiring harness if it is fully complete. If not... anyone know where I can access a diagram or other details?
Some place that might sell old Japanese format bolts?
anything? (crickets)

We've got a few guys here like Triple Jim that are into the old Japanese bikes (he even has a Yamaha 100 but I think it's a bit newer model) ... and I'm sure that they can give you links to forums sort of like ours but into old Jap bikes like you have, with user manuals on line, supplier lists, and guys who will tell you the order in which you need to do stuff.

I don't know anything about them myself (my knowledge is 45 years old now) but I felt bad about the crickets ....

It appears to be completely different from my 1978 DT100, unfortunately.  But there's a good 2-stroke board that leans toward Yamaha here: http://www.2strokeworld.com/forum/index.php  There are some very knowledgeable guys there, and I bet some of them know a lot more about that Trailmaster than I do.

I found several suppliers when I rebuilt the engine in my DT100.  Boats.net sticks in my head as a good one.  Your bike is a YL2C when you go to look for parts.  Once you get the part number from their site, even if they can't supply it, you can search for that part number on the web and find other sources.  You can probably also find a Yamaha shop manual if you snoop around a little.  I got some hits when I did a search for "1967 yamaha yl2c manual" just now.

Lannis, thanks for the empathy on the crickets.
I figured a 50 year old two-stroke wasn't likely to gather much interest.
I know the Ebsco small engine repair data base (found in many libraries) has some of the basic measurements but that's all I've found so far. (the bike arrived last night and I haven't even copied the VIN yet)

The Trailmaster was actually pretty innovative at the time, using disc-valve induction rather than piston-port. I really like old strokers...you should have an enjoyable time with the restoration. I suggest that you buy a parts book so you can identify the parts that may be missing or broken...

Sounds like a fun project. EBAY could be your friend. About the only place now a days that I can find parts for my 72 Kawasaki F7 175.

yeah, it is a nice gift for free  ... all I need to do is pay for the parts on a bike I didn't know I owned.

I've finally had a chance to explore the links and addresses you all have sent. Thank you.
While at work I found a copy (2 actually, I work in Libraries) of Chilton's motorcycles and atv from 1945 to 1985.
I'll be checking that one out a few times.
It is surprising the amount of information that has come my way in just 24 hours.
Now I decide if I'll pursue the gift or politely offer it back.
Looking at the parts catalogue from Charlie, dealing with a bonafide business for reliable parts may be challenging.
But, in theory, it could be interesting.

If you think the definition of interesting is spending $4K to build a motorbike worth maybe $2K , then yes

Much though I like the person who found the bike and know his intentions are well meaning I agree with your appraisal. 'Do I want to do this' was my second thought as we wheeled the bike off the pickup. First thought was 'cool'.
When I've assessed the bike and parts etc I'll set a budget of what I'd be willing to pay for a toy to run around my property. Then I'll cost out repairing the drivetrain. If it works out... fine. If not, maybe it'll end up as a signpost at the highway end of my driveway.

If the donor bike were an RD or a Morini I'd have no hesitation in diving head first into a project that I already know is going to be a vertical learning curve for me.
This bike isn't speaking to me other than when it is saying: sucker!

Sell it get this? Seriously he has been listing this since spring at $1800, slowly dropping his price. Seems worth it now

2800 miles at 20 avg mph makes 140 riding hrs over four weeks divided by the $3 gal gas should get you flat broke from restaurants and hotel stays and home about two months after the riding season...why not?

This guy has 7 vids posted on YouTube for a "barn find" 1971 Honda CB350.  It has a seized engine.  He records all the work to get it back on the road.  Worth watching in a "watching paint dry" kind of way.  Slow speed entertainment.

Don, I'm about 2000 kilometres north of you. Alternately; 600 km south of the Arctic Circle.
Got winter covered. ;) ..... for 7 or 8 months every year.

Merry Christmas to you.

Merry Christmas to you.

I'm glad it's helping.  When I did the DT100, I was in a hurry to get it done before that year's 2-stroke meet, and I bought from quite a few sources.  By the end, I was starting with boats.net, and going to other sources only when necessary.

I hope you and your family have a great Christmas too.
