Lost my lights, Cali 1100
« on: July 26, 2018, 02:29:21 AM »
Hi all
Noticing my hand brake was not lighting my stop light had to do with a broken wire I decided to fix it. As I touched the connection a could see a sparkle. Now all lights are gone, presence, medium and maximum beams and also panel. Only turn lights are fine. Changed fuses but still no lights. Where should I look next?
Bike is a 2000 California 1100 special.

Thank you all for your comments.

I just learned how to test properly a relay.... sometimes they may sound good and be broken. Thanks.

Can you pop the top off the bad relay and post a picture?

I was curious to see what went wrong under the cover.
I suspect it may have blown the wire from the 30 pin (the top one in your picture) to the armature.
Then again it might have blown the contact away.

It is something else. I got one new and all fuses and those relay are fine. Also tested the lamp low/high beam. I am about to give up and trust the Guzzi to a specialist :’(

Welcome!

Have you checked the connectors on the right side of the headstock?

Fuse 3 comes to mind.  Does the horn work?

But with sparkles on it you might have a broken or burnt wires.  It might be more complicated than the average person wants to fix.

Where are you located?

Horn is working, so do turn lights and back light. Stop light does not show. Presence light in front is burnt... and I am sure it was working some time ago.
Previous owner did some custom shit that undo as much as possible and now that you mentioned burned wires....

Located in Portugal. [emoji1201]

You're new here, so you haven't been introduced to Kiwi Roy.  He's our intercontinental spark guru.  If you work with him your chances for success will be better.  He asked you to pop open a particular relay and photograph the innards.  He might be able to tell something about the problem if you do the things he asks and report back.  It might not make sense to you, but it does to him.

The broken brake light wire - what colors and how is it broken?  Cut? Stretched? Mashed? Burned?  Where is it broken?

From your second post I think we all assumed you had it sorted
Don't worry about opening the relay for now.

I'm not sure which of Carl's schematics are closest to yours

We may not have one that matches exactly, If you have the handbook could you post the schematic in the back.
Was this bike originally sold in Portugal?

The wire you shorted, was that the one feeding the front stop switch?
Note on the schematics how the light relay feeds the stop switches but the fuse feeding the light relays is fed differently.
Unplug the headlight relay and see if there is power at the 30 pin socket, that's the big one by itself (top pin of your picture)
Does the power on 30 need the key On or not?
Report back.

I see... I feel honored and a appreciate the privilege.
I hope I can get some photos soon of my front break wires.

First schematic is closest to mine.
The wire that was lose was on the front stop.

Fuses are labeled but not the relays. How can i be sure which relay is the head lights?

This is my bike in original colour when previous owner got it in Portugal

Many thanks for your great tips.

Thanks for the diagram

F4 feeds the light relay and on your bike F4 is supplied from the ignition switch so its socket will only be alive with the key ON
The other connector of Fuse 4 goes to 30 of the headlight relay socket so that will only be alive with the key ON and the fuse placed back in
At a guess I would say relay 1 is the start, relay 2 is the light relay 3 the Side stand then the 2 ECU relays
You can also look at the wire colours and match those to the socket.

To recap, with the key ON look for power at fuse 4, then 30 at the relay socket then 85 of the relay socket which will disappear while the bike is cranking.

The Start relay on your bike has to have 5 pins, when the bike is not cranking the 87a pin feeds power to the headlight relay coil (85 pin)

Since the wire you shorted is connected to the 87 pin of the light relay I would inspect the fuse closely, it may have a tiny gap

Good Luck

I have seen a few odd relays with two 87 pins (no 87a) in which case the light relay would only pick up While cranking but I doubt that's your problem.
