Sold my Norge
« on: July 25, 2021, 06:58:49 PM »
Hated to do it but it just got too heavy for me at 68 years old. I still have a low mileage 2002 California Special Sport that fits me very well. But I still wanted a sport/tourer type bike so I searched for months and finally found this 2008 Triumph Sprint ST.

It's about 150 lbs lighter than the Norge and physically a bit smaller. It fits me well at 5'9" and 167 lbs. I flew to Rockford Illinois and rode it home to Tampa Florida. This is my second Triumph triple. I put over 100,000 miles on an 04 Tiger. This 1050 engine has a little more energy than the 955cc the Tiger had.

Also surprised by the weight difference. May be a bike I may have to consider as the Norge is getting heavier every year. Good luck with it and enjoy.

I'm surprised the Triumph is any lighter than the Norge.  But balance & feel are very important too.

I've sort of gone the same route getting the Ducati 939 Supersport.

The specs say 462 lbs vs. 566 lbs. dry weights.   So more like 100 lbs. lighter than 150, but that is still a LOT lighter.     NICE machine!!

I wish I knew you were coming to Rockford I could have put you up for the night and drooled over the bike before you headed home.

I'm a year behind you at 67 and roughly the same size height and weight.   I totally get the too heavy thing, as my Norge is starting to get that way for me.  I hope to be able to keep riding it for a few more years, it is a perfect traveling bike.  I also have an older California as a back up, but it is not nearly as comfortable.

The wet weight on the Sprint is 530lbs compared to the wet weight on an 08 Norge of around 578lbs. Net difference is 48lbs.

That is based on the online Sprint specs and the approximate 36lbs of gas in a Norge, I'd be curious as to the real world weight compared to the company specs.

Great bike. I've always liked the Sprint ST and look closely at one when they were new. The triple is a great motor. Not quite the character of the Norge but smooth and quick. Enjoy!

With those Norge weight numbers… I’ll have to add a Norge fairing to my 1200 Sport and I’ll drop 15 lbs!!!

I put my old Norge on a truck scale once and was shocked to see 640 lbs. Can't vouch for the accuracy of the scale but it was regularly used and serviced.

I have read over the years different reviews that weighed the Norge at around 630 lbs ready to ride with a 1/2 take or so of gas. As an owner I believe those numbers.

Unfortunately, the width, height, and weight of my 2008 1200 Sport caught up with me after 10 really great years.  Sold in June 2020.  Will always be remembered as one fine machine!

I've owned 3 Buell XB9 Lightnings and have toured on them. Once from the Seattle area to southern CO and back. They're 395 lbs. dry. With the 3.82 gallons of gas that makes them 428 lbs. wet. I'd typically get 150 miles out of a tank before the low fuel light went on. Granted no fairing, but with a taller windscreen I actually found mine to be more comfortable than my Norge. Very fun to ride too. I'd consider it to be a great contender for a middle weight *sport* tourer.

That valve cover still holding oil?

It did the whole way back home. I've since replaced the gaskets when I adjusted my valves. Think I'll always carry that gasket maker goop with me on trips now, though I have and will also carry an extra set of gaskets. The goop wasn't so hard to scrap off my covers when I put new gaskets on, but the old paper gaskets were *really* hard to get off. The prior owner must have used some kind of glue. I made a scraper out of a scrap of G10, which is the fiberglass composite stuff they make printed circuit boards from. Sharpened an edge on it on my belt sander.
