More "old folks" health issues
« on: January 07, 2023, 02:26:27 PM »
In the wee hours of Jan, 2 I woke up with really bad pain in my chest?? Got up thinking it would pass; well it did not, so woke up the wife to call 911 to be carted off to the hospital and was checked over with no specific issue found other than some blood markers looking suspicious, so they decided to stick a camera up in there to be sure; good thing they did as there were several vessels blockages; at least two of which could not even be by passed. Unsure of how to proceed due to my age (80 this coming march) they did nothing but take pictures. About 5AM he brought the pics to us and explain the options of stents or by pass with schedules available with both 3 days out but I need to stay in hospital due to chance of a repeat. I chose the stent option due to my age. Oh my, about 8AM the pain came back in spades. About ten minutes later I was in OR getting a stent in the main offender, a balloon in another and no action in the other three as the stent had eased the pain. Next AM he decided to go back in see if he could find a way to stabilize my BP. The place he thought would accept another stent turned out to be blocked so he did nothing.
The good news I have no pain; bad news is the BP issue is on going.
Message is to get check up even if no family history of heart trouble!

Hang in there, at least you are in the right place.
The dealer in IL that I bought my 1st Guzzi from just had a valve put in his chest. Two weeks out and his toes are a bit tingly. He was real worried about it. Like he was afraid. I tried to help him look optimistic at the situation. He's also 82 and don't like cold weather, want's to go to Argentina ASAP.
I'm ten yrs out yet and will run out of breath before the heart, maybe. Good Luck & prayers .

I’m glad to hear that you’re in a good place. Scary situation for sure but the pros have your back and you’ll be fine.

I’m twenty years your junior and struggle with Myleofibrosis, congestive heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. My prognosis is grave. I’ve never been overweight, have never smoked or done drugs, don’t drink. Sometimes stuff just happens that is no fault of your own. Life is precious.

Thanks to all for the kind words~ About a yr. ago we moved up to metroplex to be near our son and medical care. No way to know but I am not sure I would have survived the second event had I been at my previous location.

Thanks to all,

Hang in there your cardiologist will figure out what is best for. I've had a couple of stents installed however during my last appointment my cardiologist asked how I was doing. I told him I had no stamina and got short of breath after a bit of activity. His assistant had done a cardiogram and when she brought in the printout he said well here is your problem. I had what is called atrial flutter. I got zapped the next day and all is well.

My brother in law went to doctor for a prescription last November and got talking about his trip to our northwest with their caravan. Doc says one of his other patients just got back from the same trip and had a heart attack a week later. Tells my b in law "He's about your age, have you had your heart checked lately?". To cut a long story short, my b in law  ended up in hospital 2 weeks later undergoing quadruple by pass surgery. All arteries blocked and blown up like small balloons and on the verge of a serious heart failure. Talk about luck.

You did the right thing right from the beginning. Get the best cardiologist in your area to advise you. Modern procedures and medications are truly life savers.
I just turned 68. I had bypass surgery at 37. At 55 they found a blockage that could not be opened up. 13 years have passed. You will learn where the limits are.
About that chest pain, it is almost impossible to describe, but you will never confuse it for anything else.
Wishing you all the best in your rehab.

80 is the new 70.  Do the bypass.  I had a similar situation and had my triple bypass about 15 months ago.  It has worked out very well.

The first month post op was a little rough, but not bad at all really.  The first couple of days are pretty intense, but the care I received in the hospital was top notch.  It was an amazing and well executed process.
