One of the things I am very much enjoying living in NM. My first mow will probably be in June and last untill September. Oh yeah, mowing consists of a five foot wide strip where my front yard meets the street. Mow about once a month. At my previous home I would have been mowing about weekly from March till end of October using a weed wacker, push mower, riding mower and tractor with bush hog. Used up a lot of quality riding time. Cut the lawn today but I went all electric for those tools, so it's just push a button. I have to get the old Honda running so I can sell it down the line.
Oh, I thought you were gonna tell us about your first experience "manscaping" Steve.
I solved 80% of my lawn mowing headaches as well as reduced my annual mowing time by 80% simply by setting up my mowers so they cut the grass at about 5.5-6" high. Some mowers won't cut that high without modification, but usually the modifications are quite easy.Cut the lawn to a height of 5.5-6" high. Then let it grow to a height about 9-10" before you cut again. You'll find in the time it takes before you need to cut your lawn again, your neighbors, who are obviously bored and have nothing better to do with their time, have cut their lawns 4-5 times!Of course this will depend on what kind of grass you have in your yard.I can't count how many times my neighbors have asked me "Why is your lawn so green? No one else's lawn looks that healthy!"I always reply "I think you are cutting your lawn waaaaay too short. Set your mower to cut as high as it can. Then see what happens."
How did you reduce you cutting time/sessions? Grass generally grows at the same rate no matter where it was last cut. So cuttings 4 inches off grass that was last cut to 4" is no different then cutting 4 inches off grass that was last cut to 6 inches. Personally I think 10 inch long grass would look bad to begin with and even worse after being mowed because the grass would be pushed over from the wheels and foot marks if using a walk behind. The only ways to reduce cutting time are mow faster or mow with a bigger mower. I did both. My old neighbor used to do this. Their grass would be around 10+ inches in length not because they were concerned with the health of the lawn buy laziness. THey lawn look amazing when they would mow it once every other month. It looked like a hay field with thick wind rows that would that would dry out clump and shade any grass underneath so it struggled to grow. It was no where near a healthy lawn.
Yep, I'm about to have to do that too. The 1st one is tough, chopping up the winter dog shit
