Title: SIXTY YEARS OF BOND'S BEST CARS
Post by: Tom on September 28, 2022, 02:18:36 PM
Any James Bond fans out there?  If nothing else the cars used in the movies were and are interesting.

"Although James Bond was partial to an Aston Martin (as you’ll soon discover in our list), he has driven an eclectic mix of cars over the past sixty years."

I always thought that the Sunbeam was a Tiger, which had a V8 and was very competitive.

Enjoy seeing one getting the paint pealed off the Aston Martin  in the last episode?

Either of the two Lotus Esprit would do nicely...thank you!

The Tiger had Ford V8. I think a 260 to start then a 289. I may be wrong on this though. The Alpine had a four cylinder.

Let me, umm, put on my anorak for a moment and put in a word for the Blower Bentley:

https://jamesbond.fandom.com/wiki/Bentley_4%C2%BD_Litre

IIRC (which is doubtful because I am a forgetful old bugger), Bond drove a customized Bentley with a blower in the first few books.  Battleship grey and rather ugly.

The cinnamon lotus esprit would be choice. Gold BBS wheels. Ohh man what a car.  And we’d turn it up with a nice 66mm turbo to about 700hp!!

No Tiger in ‘62. I had an Alpine in ‘65. MGBs would outrun me but at least it was faster than a Sprite.

This was actually my first car.  It was a faded yellow, but my father painted it metallic blue with white
racing stripes.  It had, IIRC a 900CC side valve engine that needed a lot of TLC.  Some hills I had to
back up because the reverse had a lower gear ratio than first.

This is my favorite Bond Car...  I think it was in Octopussy.

Not that this is the best car he ever drove, but I had one and loved it ! (user name might be a clue)

In Diamonds are Forever the villain drove a Jaguar like mine, though the weapon isn't standard equipment,
and mine is red.

After the "unaffordable" Aston Martin DB5...this would be my 2nd choice!  :thumb: :boozing:

You're correct.  The Tiger was a car that I was interested in buying at the time.  One of my friends that did independent British car service explained that I would need to get 3 "wobble" extensions for the socket wrench when taking out the rear spark plug while doing a tune-up.  Access holes were cut in the frame so that the spark plugs could be removed.     I was suppose to help him on the next Tiger service.  By then I got my B GT instead.  Easier to work on.

I've always loved that DB5.

And I have a soft spot for Bentleys. (Can't afford one, but that's another discussion.....)

The Tigers are cool. too.

I always associate the DB5 with James Bond first, though.

It was a grey GTV6. I'm with you 100% as far as favorite bond cars.

I am only the most casual Bond fan, but I did see they just auctioned off the Omega Seamaster 300 watch that Daniel Craig wore in the latest movie for $225,000.00! And an Omega AquaTerra that he wore in a previous Bond film for $125,000

Of course, if you can afford one of those watches, then you qualify for a '67-'68 Toyota 2000GT!

I had CBS This Morning on yesterday. George Clooney was a guest on the show. He was wearing a nice watch, uh timepiece, as far as I could figure out it was an Omega Aqua Terra. The one I think it was lists for $6,500. My wife said he could sure afford more than that. I like watches, the most I could afford was a Tissot Touch. I think he is careful with his money. He got hurt on a Vespa for Pete's sake. He could at least been on a MV Augusta.

2nd most memorable for me would be the 2CV (with the lovely Carole Bouquet).

The Hornet is on display at the Peterson Automotive Museums James Bond exhibit. https://www.petersen.org/bond (https://www.petersen.org/bond)

The exhibit was okay. The V8 Volante was actually only a shell with square tubing so it could be put on ski's. The stuntman who rode in that thing must have had major cantaloupes down there.

I misunderstood. I thought you were talking about Bond cars, not Bond's cars.

I have a 1965 Breitling Navitimer 806 featured in Thunderball though not worn by Connery. Paid 150 bucks for it new in Hong Kong. Guess its worth more today even broken. It was my main watch for twenty years but failed three times. I guess it wasn’t made for cross country motorcycle trips. Last repair estimate was 400 bucks. I said no thanks.
If I wear a watch, rare these days, its a 100 dollar Seiko that keeps near perfect time.

My Tissot Touch died. I took it in for repair, the jeweler sent it to the Tissot repair center. It needed a new movement,  $800. No thanks. I sold it on ebay as non working for $90.
