Title: Well, how bad is it going to be?
Post by: wymple on September 19, 2016, 06:14:19 PM
My Call II, 1984, has suddenly decided that it no longer needs to downshift. I'm stuck in high gear. The linkage was getting a bit sloppy in it's old age, but the arm at the trans seems to travel fully. Total disassembly?

Not a bad job if you like wrenching. Right inside of the back cover of trans if it's the spring.
Any spring to the shifter? Does it just flop up & down?

It goes back to "home" position.

I was the one riding the bike. At first it wouldn't shift into 1st, then the next little town we came through it wouldn't shift past 3rd, and finally by Stronghurst Ill. it wouldn't downshift at all. Lever moves like it should just no feel of a gear change.

While it was a little hot out it was a nice day for a ride. I messed that up by dumping the bike in R&K Cycle's driveway. Downhill, loose gravel, right hand turn, at 5mph. Only damage was to my pride. Then we gnawed on a ridiculously sized tenderloin at Spoonies. Then the shifting fun started. No joke, I can mess up a crowbar in a sand pile.

That sounds more like shifter pawl than a spring. Ron will sort it, can't do any better!!

How bad?  Around 8-10hrs.

Looks and feels normal, just doesn't work. I will pull it apart and take it to Ron over at R&K. Good chance to try a new clutch with all the miles on it.
