This is a new thread for the Okie Campout. Oct 8-10, 2021.
Please keep it on topic.
Talimena State Park, near Talihina Oklahoma.
The state of Oklahoma has some new regulations regarding use of state camp grounds , Doug is working hard to sort thru the changes . Anyway , the Talimena state park is now managed at the Wister State Park office , 918 655 7275 , so if you are coming you need to contact them . The state is requiring a parking pass that comes with the reservation , apparently the state is enforcing this seriously .
Some of you have been asking about when it will be .
If you have never been to the Ouachita Mountains in SE Oklahoma , ridden the Talimena Drive or the other beautiful roads in the area , there simply isn't anywhere better to spend a few days exploring on a motorbike . The park is located in the Ouchita National Forest , one of the most lush and green places in America , clear mountain streams , light traffic , a wonderful area . The park has nice amenities , first rate , there are two good restaurants in Talihina , and as always , you will not go hungry .

There are changes to the camping arrangements also.
The pavilion rental is paid. Five tent site's and parking permits are included. That rental and availability is in my name please don't call the park and ask for your name to be assigned to one of those sites. I can see that getting the really screwed up.
I have been told that those tents will be allowed near the pavilion with limitations.
Tent camping in the grass near the pavilion is currently not being permitted for "safety reasons" .
I was told that the five tents associated with the pavilion will have to be placed adjacent to the RV sites next to the pavilion . Rv 9 &10 are rented to members of our group.
At this stage everything is workable and like always if you think you are coming GET YOUR RESERVATIONS MADE. RV sites will fill fast and can be cancelled if your plans change
As Dusty already said Harold and Mary are no longer there. Harold passed from complications of --19.
With Harold's absence there is not going to be free firewood like we have enjoyed in the past. We'll probably have to work on that.
I'm sure not the only thing I missed but worth mentioning is that the parking permit monies are supposed to be funneled to the park they were collected at. From my view that's about the only thing they got right
The new park manager Crystal seems to be good to work with certainly not deserving of any grief over any of these new policies.
I'll get her contact info up later

This area has some great scenery, and some nice motorcycle roads

P.S. I went online and reserved the site across the street from the pavilion. Count the Cajun/coonass contingent in.

She floated away the year of the monsoon. She finally called from a Arkansas river sand bar. At least I caught her before she made Little Rock. No tellin' WHAT could have happened to her in NLR! :thumb:

Good to hear that Colleen is going to make it.I guess if David is part of the deal we can let him tag along.

Are reservations required for tents?

Are reservations required for tents?
No I have been assured by camp host that accomodations will be made for tent campers. There are still tent spaces available near the shelter house

Really? When I called and made reservations for a tent site and motorcycle I was told that was a requirement now…so maybe I paid for something that is no longer needed?
-
To clarify, all campers will be expected to pay. Five tent site allotments come with the fee already paid for the pavilion rental. One of the spots has been spoken for at this point. If someone else would like to claim another send me a PM. I have been assured by management that late arriving tent campers will not be turned away, they will still be expected to pay

Just rode the Talimena Parkway, Ark 88/OK 88. Road in great condition (but rainy and foggy)

we should have some spill over room to add some tents.
Shhhhhhhh!
-
Thought I would bump this up and start filling in some blank spots. . The pavilion rental is paid for Friday and Saturday. I will most likely be there Friday morning, work commitments dictate that. Will be prepared to do breakfast Saturday as usual. Sat dinner is open but I'm leaning along the lines of burgers on the grill or the like. As always no one who comes hungry will leave hungry. Would like to have those coming to chime in so some sort of headcount can be made. So who's coming?
-
I'm booked at Site 1. I'll be glad to help out but am distancing until I get the next booster.
Of course my cigars usually ensure that no one wants to get close.
Prolly get there Thursday evening with the travel trailer and a motorcycle.

My plans have snagged. I'm still 60% positive.
If I can't make it, I have RV site 1 prepaid.
-
I have a campsite prepaid. Being a bit over 1 week from my triple bypass I should probably pass.
I would be happy to make it available to anyone who cares to speak for it first. If interested send me a PM.

Bump,Got the bike loaded and most of the cooking stuff. I hope to arrive Friday morning sometime.

I'm planning to be there. Let's ride to Krebs for Italian Lunch on Friday. :bike-037:
-
Just got my e mail conformation for my campsite   :thumb:

For Friday, I thought some legacy Okie-Italian would be in order for lunch. Take an hour's ride to Krebs. There are a couple of local places, Pete's and Rossana's. We tried Pete's last time we might try the other?

Will have to miss this one as we are in the middle of a move; quite an undertaking after 26 years in this house on the lake!! Until this one, have made them all since '06!!

Hey John...90% probability I can join you for lunch on Friday, once you firm up a time and location. I'll probably meet you there, depending on the route I end up choosing to come up.

I was thinking about 1pm at Rosanna's in Krebs. Hopefully, Doug can make it if we leave around noon. You've got a little further to go. (Krebs ain't a big town, so in event that we change a venues to Pete's it's only a couple minutes ride away.)
But I'm planning lunch at Krebs at 1300.
You might PM me your cell and we can synchronize our telemetry. :azn:

Thanks John...will do...that sounds perfect! I'm planning on being somewhere around Tyler or Terrell by Thursday night...then it should be an easy ride up from there Friday morning but I was planning on meandering a bit. Lunch at 1 pm sounds perfect....save some bruschetta for me!
Will shoot you my cell phone via PM.

Krebs is an Italian community that was centered on turn of the last century's coal mining. I know there are three legacy restaurants there perhaps another one in McAlester and another one that was established a few years ago in OKC. They are also known for Choc Beer.
Nothing too exotic here. It was local styled food and some steaks at the high end. One of the places is more upscale but doesn't do lunch on Friday as best I can tell.
I noticed that Talihina al$o has a gourmet restaurant on the weekend. Lucky we have Chef's Doug and Dave or we might blow our gas money.
-
Sounds like a good plan…will send a text or call.

Great weekend! Good to see all you fellers!
-
I had a great time as did everyone else. Prescott was absent but his friends came by and shared some nice cigars. Doug cooked some fantastic Chicken Fried Steak Fingers, his secret was using Sirloin. Springfield John brought his salmon from his Alaska trip.
Some of his went to a biker bar/shop/museum near lake Sardis. Pretty cool place. The weather was great for all kinds if riding.
The Krebs lunch didn't make due to logistics. Hopefully we'll make it next year.
-
Enjoyed hanging out again. Good time. :afro:
-
Made it home…420 windy miles, and rode 100 of that with RHAT on his way home…met by chance on the side of the road! Lots of great fun and riding.
-
Perfect weather.Got to see old amigos. Food was excellent THANKS! The grounds and showers were in good shape. New hostess Crystal seems to be on top of things. Burn ban this year, so no choking all night on the eternally shouldering firepit.

Please let your friends know we appreciated the jerky and cigars.
It was a pleasure to meet a few of y’all! I hope the jerky didn’t make it through the night and the cigars treated everyone very well. My apologies for not staying longer, we arrived Wednesday mid day and started riding. I could tell my crew was getting tired and cranky. We loaded up and headed back early Saturday.
