Ugh. Thanks for sharing Chuck. Lately I’ve been using my extractor to just suck the oil through the filler hole and not touch the plug.

No ............. but did forget to replace the oil fill cap on my W650 after an oil change several years ago.  When I cranked it, I thought "what is that unusual huffing/puffing sound?"  I found out as soon as she started up, and blew at least a half pint of oil skyward, all over the inside of the open overhead garage door.  What a hell of a mess!  Glad I wasn't sitting on the bike.

Ah, I'm reminded of the time as a lad when I changed the oil in my Slant 6 Dodge pickup before going to my night shift job. I got about a mile from the old farmhouse I was living in before the oil light came on. WTF??

I stopped in the middle of the rock chip road amongst the cornfields and checked the dipstick against the glow of the headlights - sure enough, nothing! Peering beneath the truck, I could see the trail of oil behind, reflected in the moonlight.

I'd imagine quite a few of you know exactly what happened. The oil filter on the Slant 6 faces upwards, and my young inexperienced self didn't check the old filter for the presence of the gasket, nor did I see it clinging to the flange face when reaching up to spin the new one on.  The extra gasket sealed up long enough to survive the test fire and get me a mile from the house.

Lesson learned! make sure the oil stays in the engine!!

Never.
I've done other stuff that might not be considered a best practice, but I've never missed replacing a drain bolt.

Well here’s a story for ya. When I was working in a factory back in the 80s a guy had a newer Toyota pickup he decided to change oil in. He brings it into the factory and drains the oil into a storm sewer and drops the plug out of sight down there. So genius that he is he cuts the end off a broomstick and hammers it into the hole thinking he’ll get a new plug later. Welllll he keeps putting it off and the wood plug falls out on the expressway and his oil light comes on but he can’t be late for work again so keeps driving until the engine seizes. The warranty didn’t cover stupidity so new engine.

Everyone know you need to use ash or hickory for oil plugs. Broom handles are too soft and don't take the heat.

Wow must be the day for forgetfulness, I was changing oil in the Kubota today and a buddy of mine showed up and I lost my train of thought and poured the oil in and it ran right out on the ground. I blamed it on him for interrupting me.

This one is pretty big but I got it for my boat diesel. For the bikes I just stick the tube into the filler plug hole.  If the engine is warm it sucks it all out in about 30 seconds or so.  You can reverse the flow and pump the used oil into discard jugs. They sell them at most auto parts stores.

Everybody has 'that day'.

I used to work on material handling equipment. I changed the oil on a truck, using the customer's dock space. Forgot the plug, the puddle got my attention somewhere in the middle of the 4th quart. Put the plug in, filled the pan, started the truck to move it...
Forgot the filter. 2 more quarts.

I used all 4 bags of floor-dri I had with me, got laughed at by their entire crew, and made some poor truck driver wait an extra half hour for the cleanup. I have oil plug ptsd.
Something wistful and amusing, yet poignant.

Uhhh.. nope. One time I was servicing the mower and drained the oil when hot. Thought, "Don't forget to put the drain plug back in," so did that. Changed the filter, put in fresh oil. What I didn't do is remember to remove the drain pan from under the mower, and a week later backed it out dumping a good part of the  quart and a half on the ground.

Never done that, but my wife added oil to her car, left the cap off and closed the hood...

The car had a couple leaks, so I thought nothing of it when I smelled burning oil while driving it to Lowes later that day. I pulled in the parking lot and was idling in the car, checking the size of something on their website.  The guy parked next to me was pretty mad when he went to exit his car (parked downslope of me) and stepped in a big puddle of oil running out from under our car.  Opened the hood, what a mess!

Luckily the cap stayed pressed between the hood and the air cleaner, so at least I didnt have to spring for a cap!

Yep, and I was sitting on the Griso backing it out of the garage.  My pants leg and boot smelled great!

Drained the engine oil in the el Camino, got distracted by something and only a quart went in the engine before I realized the problem.
