Dangerous Pot Metal Foot Pegs
« on: January 24, 2015, 05:16:20 PM »
Today I got an interesting surprise. I was backing my Jackal out of the garage, and the right highway peg caught on another bike's bag. It was just dragging across it without much force, and it wasn't scratching the bag, so I just kept backing out.

Then the peg fell off.

It snapped at the screw holes that held it in. When I picked it up, I saw that it was made from pot metal. If I had tried to rest my foot on this thing, it would have popped off at 70 mph.

I don't remember where I got this. Somebody was selling kits. They come with solid stainless supports that are threaded to screw into existing holes on the Jackal frame. Anyway, they are clearly worthless. If you have them, don't trust them.

Thanks. Anyway, you can see the pot metal in the break. I suppose it's possible that it's cast iron. I guess I'll have to make new pegs from actual metal.

when things like this happen, it is often due to earlier damage

Sadly, in the case of many consumer items, you can't buy quality anymore.  As, with all the cheap Chinese crap on the market, no one bothers to make any for the few people willing to pay more for quality.

I agree. I've looked at 1.5" 303 stainless, and it appears that I'll be lucky if I can copy these parts without spending at least $50 on the metal. On the up side, it's a simple job.

Someone mentioned the possibility that the peg had been damaged in the past. I don't think so. The bike went down once, but it was on the left side, and the peg that broke was on the right.

Imagine having peg like this in the normal position, where you might put your weight on hit when riding over an obstacle! Lawyers dream of products like that.

This was a kit made specifically for Jackals. I didn't get it from China on Ebay.

I build a few custom bikes from time to time and using available parts from other bikes works well if a guy has some fabrication skills. Example,70's Honda 750's and some smaller bikes have heavy gauge steel and forged steel folding steel rider pegs .East to modify by or use as is. They can be found on Ebay for chump change.
The broken peg above looks like the cast aluminum aftermarket pegs often used on Harleys. Only they usually have a solid aluminum peg with a steel clevis. That's a poor peg design no matter what it's country of origin.

And as highway pegs, they would be fine.  You're not likely to stand up on highway pegs.

I wouldn't want one breaking off and flying into the windshield of the driver behind me. Pot metal just looks like a bad idea here.
