No More California 1400 Touring or Custom?
« on: February 19, 2016, 09:35:38 AM »
Buried in another thread (about whether the Touring SE is available in the US), someone wrote that he had read somewhere that Moto Guzzi will be dropping the California 1400 Touring and Custom in favor of the Eldorado, Audace, and MGX-21.

Strangely, that thread was derailed early on , and no one ever responded to this statement. Consequently, I am creating a new thread in the hopes that someone with knowledge will notice it and respond.

I have not heard any updates from people who would know, but remember that it's not unusual for Europe to have variants that never make it to the USA.

There were several Tonti California variants, "California Classic" and "Bellagio",  that never made it here.

There were also variants of the Nevada that never made it Stateside.

Audace, Eldo, MGX would be a full lineup for a platform only selling by the dozens here.

I can't imagine WHY Guzzi would drop the original two Cali 14s. The Custom is the basic "sporty" version of this platform, and the Touring is the only out-of-the box bagger, a popular class and Guzzi's answer to the Road King.

I wouldn't like to see it any larger.

I am sure that is far too logical a reason.  At this point as a dealer we have no idea why no California's.  The best I can do is say that they ran into a few roadblocks. The company that produced the California Saddlebags went belly up and they are evaluating another source. The intended having a touring version of the Eldorado ready by Daytona time and when that did not happen the pulled out of Daytona.  The brackets for the saddlebags on the Eldorado are in the works.  Then of course there is always a touring version of the MGX-21 to look forward to.

large enough to lap the island? Not enough to traverse on backroads west of the Blueridge Parkway in the USA without planing for fuel stops.

There is enough air space behind the Cal 14 tank side covers for probably a gallon on each side !!!

The tank doesn't have to be physically any larger, it just needs to use all the space already between your knees!

One of the things that puts me off about the Cal 14 is its limited fuel capacity and range for its intended mission.

Well, I confirmed it for myself. No Moto Guzzi at Bike week! What a shame.

Having seen all 4 lined up in my dealer's showroom a couple of weeks ago, I think that the only difference between the Audace, Eldorado, Touring and Custom is paint and saddlebags and maybe rear shocks but I could be wrong

Oh come on. Does anyone really think the "Flying Fortress" is going to sell in numbers greater than the Cali Touring? Only a pirate wannabe with a very small penis is my guess.

Newsflash:  There are more pirate wannabees than there are discerning Guzzisti.

The Cal 14 variants are currently selling in the dozens of units per "model".  Hundreds per year.

I don't think any of them are going to sell many, but Baggerz are hawt right now.

Just looked at the Moto Guzzi USA site. They show the Audace, Eldorado, Custom and Touring but no MGX-21 or SE. They also don't mention what year is available but are offering $2500.00 cash back on 2014 Custom and Touring models so they must be sitting on a back log now! It's nice for Guzzi to come out with more models but I would guess it cost dealers more money to stock them. I think they would be wiser to do a better job with marketing what they have and increasing their dealer network rather than spending money marketing basically the same bike. I like them all but just saying. I guess if they stop selling the touring it will increase the value of my Touring!

I will be sad if Moto Guzzi drops the California 1400 Touring. That is the two-up bike I would have bought if the Norge were not such a screaming deal... Such a beautiful bike.

Like the V7 line, or the basic 5 Harley model lines, these are all just variations on a theme. There may be different ancillary parts, but it's the same basic motor and frame. Any one of them can be any other one of them with enough effort.

my guess is there are probably a few leftover Customs and Touring models.  I would imagine that once the supply is down, Guzzi will replenish those bikes perhaps with with evolutionary updates.

I think it's a great platform.  I wish the riding position was more standard than cruiser and Guzzi had a slimmed down package similar to the Beemer RT (without all the electronics).

Guzzi has said publicly that the MGX 21 will be revealed at the Sturgis Rally this summer.   No, really, I'm serious.

MGX will only appeal to those that have to have the most over-the-top look. It's actually cartoonish. It will not sell more units than Cali 14, Audace, or Eldorado sell individually.
