Guzzi fork swaps
« on: January 13, 2019, 02:38:27 PM »
I want to upgrade the forks on my 85 Cal II Franken cafe.  Who's done swaps on a Tonti frame?
I know I can buy Showas but offset is important.  I don't want it to steer slower.
Anyone have an adjustable Guzzi front end?  Preferably right side up forks?  The early 2000 GSXR forks are nice but the offset looks too small.  Saw one set of Sport forks but they are $$$.
Currently dual disc 35mm front end.

My EV has factory adjustable forks.  Left is rebound and Right is compression.

It's not GSX-R but it works for a California.

Yes that could work.  the other dimension is the fork length.  Ideal is 29-30" length.

I put 2006 gsxr forks on both my cx100. Excellent!!! I got "best" brakes along with "best" suspension. Ohlins out back and instant mini griso.
Well worth the effort. Going from 65mm offset to 30mm offset seems to improve handling and stability for me. You will need to play with front ride height to get trail right. Check the archives for my post.

I would think the EV forks would be awesome for a swap on a older bike. They are right side up like the old ones, but they are MUCH bigger. Not sure how the geometry would work out..  But its guzzi, with huge tubes, and huge brakes..

The EV is a Tonti frame so that helps.  41mm vs 35mm.  I nee to see what the offset is.  Plus they're adjustable.  Definitely an option.

45mm, some big meaty  tubes... Me and Mr Petrus are friends and often ride together..I have done many fork swaps and look forward to helping him if necessary..My lathe will be humming making spacers , steering stem and or axle or whatever it takes.. If the yoke offset is where it needs to be, the rest just falls into place...

Talked to Pete today to confirm that he wants to take it on. Found axle, brake calipers, fender mount/fork brace. Still looking for handle bar rubber mounts. Sounds like he is more than capable of the fiddling to make it work. Got to find a box for it all.

I’d like to know how much is involved in doing a 45mm fork swap?

The EV triples have a way longer steering stem likely, that will have to be dealt with somehow.  DonG

Both the Cal II and EV have frames with the tall steering head.

Well then bolt up should be straight forward. Steering stop issues may arise?  DonG

Q1: I would like to know what what parts have been used in a successful 16" to 18" wheel conversion for a 1000 SPII. I put this in here because I have heard a fork swap may go along with that.

Q2: Also, in doing a GSXR fork swap to a Tonti. Which triple trees and steering head shaft are used? This would be for a Convert with bad forks and brakes.

Both the Cal II and EV have frames with the tall steering head.

So,...  an EV 45mm would bolt up to a Cal III frame with little modification?

Which leads to a tangent.  Steering head angles?  A.  T3/G5 head angle the same as a Cal III?  B.  LMIV the same as the Cal III?

I put a 1999-era White Power USD fork on a tall-neck Tonti frame (1980s T5 I think).  The fork came with undrilled clamps so we pressed the OEM stem in.  As yet unridden.

I think all Tontis have the same steering angle.

I may end up having to have custom triples made if the steering lock is insufficient.

17" wheel, Ducati axle and bearings and some caliper spacers:
