I put a little in only because I had it left over. I think the GL5 oil should be fine on its own.......maybe.

Not in the GRiSO. When first I drained the bevel drive and gearbox the oil came out a clear golden brown, looked like new. I refilled with Red Line Heavy Shockproof, the pink shit. I am coming up on a major service, so I guess I'll see how it fares. The manual doesn't mention any oil additives that I am aware of.

The Scura, I'm not 100% but I believe I read in Chucks maintenance log that he had added Moly to the bevel drive on at least one occasion.

Now, guys around here seem to add Moly to their older Guzzis. Those being Loop Frame and Tonti Frame bikes.

I suppose if it helps you sleep at night you can add some and it won't hurt.

Not the transmission, but the rear drive on all the non-CARC guzzi I own(ed). I also added ZDDP additive to the engine oil on the smallblock (80's model)

I use whale oil. I have to get my own whale one of these days, are they easy to catch?

Shop manual calls for Moly in the drive, so it gets molybin the drive.

Absolutely not. Found a few bikes that used moly and had roller bearing failures. I figured the particles piled up in front of the rollers causing them to skid and gall the bearing race.

Amsoil has a "Severe Gear" product that has served me well even on the mediocre gears used in the Ural differential. I also use the companion "Manual Transmission" product in gear boxes. Haven't seen a failure yet.

YMMV

done that  as a precaution for the last 40 years in all my guzzi twins.
it might , or might not be necessary with current oils.
Having said that , it obviously didnt hurt ( the V7sport gearbox has only been opened once in 200.000 miles because the sppring broke)
its cheap, so i'll keep doing it

I used Moly additive on my last lube change, because I only had 'casual' gear oil available.

Upon disassembly and inspection subsequently, I found about a pound of black mud in the bottom of the housing- far, far more moly than I put in previously. So either a previous owner poured an enormous amount in, and let it settle for a long time, or the moly settles out and doesn't drain. After a lot of homework, I've settled for Chevron ESI 85-140, Boron-based extreme pressure additive package rather than Sulphur-Zinc or Moly.
Somewhere in the literature it does say beware of water contamination as it may deteriorate seals. Regular inspection to follow.
Something wistful and amusing, yet poignant.

A lot of varied answers.  I guess I will stick with the recommendation in the service manual.

I used it in my 02 stone. May or may not next time. So for you all thats been around longer, does the old Moly thats settled down get remixed after a fluid change?

How much moly does it take. I forgot as it has been years since I did it last. The bike has been kept running but not ridden for awhile due to illness. I need to change the tranny and rear drive and forgot how much moly I used to put in it?

Inner needle bearing race from a "moly enriched" final drive.

I got to wonder why Moly was required, none of the major auto manufacturers required this, likely not required in your final drive either.  DonG

BMW (older) had a very similar final drive. I don't remember anyone adulterating oil for the BMW final drives.
The older BMW drives lasted a bit longer than forever.

Yes, I go with the manual says to do.  I added it and never had an issue.  Maybe it would be just fine without it but since the manual says to add it, I added it...

In the rear drive only. 20mls to make up the 190cc total in my 750 Breva.

I have been adding some Fortron in to the gearbox.  Don't know whether it does any good but it is not coming out iridescent as it used to.

Thanks for posting that table. As luck would have it, I was changing the gear lube in my Guzzi(s) when I noticed that the Guzzi owners manual and Haynes manual for the T were different for the rear drive lube. So it was great to have a table from Guzziology. Not sure why I couldn't find it in my copy, maybe it's a different version? Anyways, you can read about my tale of woe and intrigue by pressing the green button!
