Tire size on a 2000 Quota
« on: October 18, 2016, 03:43:43 PM »
Hi. Just introduced myself on the introduction page. I am the proud owner of a Red 2000 Quota and just have a quick question (probably the first of many). The specs call for a 130/80 R 17 tire on the rear and that is what it currently has. In the deal for the bike, I got a new tire (Michelin Anakee) but the size is 140/80 R 17. Will this wider tire fit the rim? And, will there be any clearance issues? Hate to sound like a noob, but I are one. Thanks!!!!

Shouldn't be any clearance issues, but the last thing I'd want on a Quota is a taller back tire!

I hear ya. I wouldn't either. This one is just a bit wider, if I understand the tire terminology. 140 vs 130.

A 140 80 series tire will be slightly taller than a 130 80 series tire . Rocker is referencing the fact that Quotas are already geared too high .

Sorry to interject at a tangent with nothing helpful about tyre sizes, but i can't let the abusive remarks about Quota gearing pass unnoted. I absolutely love the tall gearing on my Quota.  Sure, I spend most of the time in 4th, reserving 5th for highway cruising where the Quota feels effortlessly comfortable. First gear is deliciously tall - great for smooth easy starts, with no need to instantly click into second as soon as one is moving. Yet, with the Quota's grunt, it's not too high for comfortable 1st gear trolling along rough roads.  I might agree with Rocker that raising the gearing even more might be a bit too much, but it's just great the way it is.

Depending on the tire a 140 might be really tight from what I remember. Some brands of 140's will fit and others have reported that some do not.

Thanks for the input, guys. I had no idea that the 140 would be slightly taller than the 130. Anyone want a good deal on my new Michelin 140 tire? lol

The 140 is a measurement in MM's , the 80 is aspect ratio . In other words , the sidewall is 80% as tall as the tire is wide . Thus , a 140/80 tire will be slightly taller than a 130/80 .
