Hunting wolfs on motorcycle (NGC)
Gliderjohn:
My wife grew up in the high plains of far NW Kansas. We still get a weekly newspaper from her home town. The paper has a section of historical news. This last week it mentioned that in 1915 a motorcycle wolf hunt was conducted. It said the chasing the wolfs through the flat plains of the prairie sent the wolfs seeking their holes. That was about it. I would guess that was pretty exciting riding for several reasons.

They did what?
rodekyll:
AK fish and game recently made a pass through some borough in the interior, doing their predator control via helicopter. Apparently the wolves are migrating to this location fro mall over the region to prey on a particular herd of caribou that is both vital for the humans living in the area and also currently having a herd-wide health problem -- some sort of virus. Since they're all a bit weak and sickly, the humans have temporarily stopped hunting them, but the kills to predators are increasing at an unsustainable rate. They say if the wolves manage to eradicate the herd it will be the first recorded extinction of a subspecies by non-human overhunting.
redrider:
Wolves are showing up here in SC. I had one flush in front of me at the NE Campus. Came out of the growth and in one leap landed in the middle of the road and then one more into the woods. Big and Grey. The grounds worker with her back to the wolf was ten feet away and oblivious.
It is a wondrous thing to witness evolution in action. Sick herd wiped out by predation. Disease spread halted?
