Title: 96 Cali brake/signal light trouble
Post by: flower_king001 on April 06, 2019, 02:42:29 PM
Hi,

New to me as of today...1996 Cali i

 96 Cali i

Front left signal light broke at mount. Disconnected it and removed till I get a replacement.

At this time no brake lights

When I hit the brake light (pedal or lever) the left rear signal light comes on but no brake light.

Also the left signal indicator on the dash comes on at the same time as well.

 Suggestions to start?

Thanks

Odd. Maybe a ground fault.

Besides those plastic brake light reflectors melting and failing, in those years the taillight wiring under the rear fender could rub the tire and get damaged.

Look for a damaged wire under the fender. And inspect the plastic reflectors.

Still not sure why the brake and right turn signal and interacting though.

Good advice Wayne...I do need and pull the bulbs, inspect the reflectors and make sure the correct bulbs are installed. I also thought there might be one of those "special brake light boxes' installed.

Is the fuse/relay configuration the same as on a 1998 EV?

Thanks

I had the same issue with my '97 Cali Anniversary.  The problem was the poor contact of the rear light unit on the bulbs themselves.

After much frustration, I soldered them in, including the common connection around the brass base of the bulbs.  I figured I wouldn't have to change the bulbs that often, and in fact never did.  Later, I swapped out the bulbs for LED units.

Dunno about the left signal light, these should be on a separate circuit.

This wiring diagram should help.  http://www.thisoldtractor.com/guzzi007/schematics/1996_California_1100i.gif

That info should be on a sticker on inside of side cover.

Found damaged wires under fender. Called Harper's and ordered a new tail-light harness. I figured that would be a good place to start.
