V7 Racer auhentication
« on: March 06, 2024, 09:17:22 PM »
Hello to the Guzzi group ,
I'm looking at purchasing a 2011 V7 racer and the number plate showing production # out of 1000 is missing ?
Everything looks find and have two questions;
1- Is there a way to decode the VIN # to confirm if this unit is a true V7 racer
2- Would it be possible to order a replacement number plate
Anything else I should be looking for ? I read somewhere that the V7 had a plastic gas tank that had a tendency of cracking up to 2013 when they might have switched to metal? I doubt it since DOT required metal tank I believe and sure this group knows.
Thanks in advance for your response and wisdom.

No idea on Vin vs racer#.

Yes the 2011 definitely has the plastic tank. IIRC it's maybe a 4.0 or 4.5g tank.

Starting sometime in 2012 they started using a larger 5.5g metal tank.

The V7 Racer is worth no more or less than a comparable V7 nor are the any more or less desirable.

V7R's should have a red frame and swingarm clip-ons, rearsets and a upswept exhaust. There is also a number plate riveted to the top triple and the top triple does not have castings for handlebars.

As for the plastic tank there are plenty of non-metal fuel tanked bikes out there of the same vintage and still currently produced.

My 2012 V7R VIN needed in 212 the same number as my V7R. It really doesn't mean anything as the I'd bet the entire V7 lineup that year started at 001 and ran to 9999. The V7R was just a block of bikes built within that VIN range.

my 2011 Racer's number plate matched the last 2 digit's VIN. not sure about the newer racers but 2011 seems that way.  there were reports of paint cracking on the chrome plastic tank in Europe. I think thats the main reason they switch to the black tank when bringing the bike to US. I am still using the plastic tank. only problem is it expand a little and I have to trim a little bit of the engine mounting "puck" to secure the tank back on the frame

Looks like 2017 racer frame VIN should start with ZGULB00
