POLITICAL ADS ON WG
« on: January 14, 2019, 11:01:50 AM »
LUAP:

I can't imagine Montana US Senator Steve Daines offers Wild Guzzi enough $ to justify his political ads popping up on my screen. I am not interested in this forum associating with any political party or ideology.  My 2 cents...

I believe the ads you see are a result of YOUR browser history and have little or nothing to do with WG.

I.E. WG isn't choosing the ads you see and is not associating with any political party or ideology.

I think Kev is right. I never see different ads than several of German dealers for cars, bikes and stuff. Not even some from our Chancellor Frau Dr. Merkel  :azn:

just clean your cookies from time to time, and you will see a big change in what ads pop up.

Most are triggered by your browsing history, IMO.

just clean your cookies from time to time,

Yes.  Quick and easy to do.  Plus, A lot of spyware/malware/anti-virus apps will do this for you.

I googled US Saddlebag company this morning, and have gotten a few of their ads showing on WG in the couple hours since.  Friday I was on Cycle Trader, and got some ads from them on WG later in the day.

The ads are directed and targeted, based on your searching/browsing history.

I have chosen the settings on my browsers (FireFox 64 ESR, SeaMonkey and Edge) in a way that private data (including cookies) are deleted each time I close them. This also helps when you e.g. want to book a flight online, find one, but proceed to search. If you don´t erase the cookies before you return to the offer you found before it can happen it is not so good priced as before...

Maybe, maybe not. But your search history is proving that you fit the demographic (age, gender, location)…

#1: I have no say about any types of ads that are displaying on your personal computer? If I did, you'd only see Guzzi ads. But, since Guzzi don't advertise, I guess that'll never happen. The next thing I choose through market targeting is stuff that all of us like. Camping, riding, outdoor gear, motorcycle parts, etc. But, those types of ads will only show up if you're using a browser that has never searched for anything and placed a cookie on your computer. Also, some local businesses to your location might occasionally put an ad into Googles rotation. It's strange how it all works, and I could talk about it all day and it still wouldn't make much sense.

#2: Aint the algorithms of googles search history and use of cookies fun?  As others have said, it's all about your search history/cookies, etc the way the ad rotation is displayed. I cannot control it.

#3: The best solution is to use only 1 browser (Waterfox is great) for WG if you don't want stuff like this happening. Use another browser for everything else. Just a thought...

I think that this has to be the case, not only because if I was searching for that many girls I would of either died of a coronary or the old Beef Bayonet would of dropped off or been worn to a nubbin years ago but I also get ads for caravans, what in the US are referred to as 'Trailers' I believe? The day I display any interest in a 'Toad' or becoming a 'Toadist' is the day that my kids have strict instructions to stove the back of my head in with the largest cast iron skillet we possess, drag me over the road to the cemetery and chuck me in the next available open grave!

Spuddy lives in Montana, which might be enough to provoke a Montana senator's ad without any relevant browsing history.

Me, I'm drowning in Olympus camera equipment ads, having recently made a fateful step in that direction.

I think the net effect of all this targeted advertising on all of us must be to increase the volume of stuff we eventually buy. I'll try erasing the cookies.

Mmm, cookies....

All this mention of Montana, and the ads I am seeing are for Montana Timber.  Makes me want to go and ride the fabulous roads up there again!

Surely the OP must have taken into consideration that on a site that strictly bans political discussions as part of the rules of engagement, the chances of it being remotely connected, sponsored or aligned to any political advertising has to be zero.

YES! Install this; Privacy Badger's great. Although it doesn't really impact the adds you're seeing, I'd also recommend installing HTTPS Everywhere, also by the EFF. A little more security is never a bad thing: https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere
