Are reservations necessary at the campground, or could I just show up?   I haven’t been to Datil before.

No...plenty of camping spaces available if you just show up.

There are about 8 rooms at the little motel there, but they sell out a year in advance.

35 miles down the road is the infamous LARGO Motel, where we have stayed a few times. :thumb: It's good, clean, cost effective, and there is a good restaurant on the property...

The Eagle campground web site says RVs only, no tents.

The Eagle campground web site says RVs only, no tents.

That is incorrect...it is "TENT-CITY" for the Guzzi Rally...and that's a FACT!! :thumb:

See all the photographic evidence of TENT-CAMPING at previous Guzzi rally at The Eagles Nest Campground in scenic Datil, NM!! :thumb:

The Largo Motel in Quemado is more than adequate for this rally.  Datil has one gas station offering only 86 and 88 octane. Remember to fill up before if you need premium. I was told that premium is unnecessary at 7500 feet. I doubt that’s true but I’m no engineer.

I posted the excerpt because I thought the place may be under new ownership, had changed its rules, etc, since the last event.

No worries - you can call / email Matt Forsland & Stephan Baylay, (who put on the event every year, if you have any concerns....they know the owners of Eagles Nest General Store / Saloon / Campground / property, and have a good relationship with them.

Yes, the Largo Motel and Cafe is thumbs up all around...but it is 35 minutes up the road...

Of course, in the OTHER direction, past the VLA (Very Large Array), and toward Socorro, there is the town of MAGDELENA, and the High Country Lodge.    :thumb:

We stayed there one year, but the Largo Motel is much better!

Of course, just a few minutes down the road from Datil, is the famous VLA (Very Large Array), well worth a stop! :thumb:

Roy

Roy,
Take a look at the this route:

US93 south throu( Kalispell to Missoula.
US12 east to Bozeman, MT
US191 south all the way to New Mexico, near the rally.

This is a scenic and fairly direct route, no slab.

A must do ride each year.   Fun place, fun people.  Plenty of tent camping, plenty of good food, and riding is wonderful. Matt puts on a great low key gig.  Don’t miss it!

JJ, were you a cheerleader in an earlier life?  You do such a great job of promoting these events.

Now, we need you to join us in Ouray, CO on Sept. 5-8 for the Wildguzzi Great Western Adventure at the Ouray KOA, likely the nicest KOA anywhere.

Thanks for your kind words, alanp ....not a cheerleader, but I did spend >25 years doing sales / marketing / business development for a number of high-tech companies.  Photography is also a hobby of mine....

I will be at Datil in August  :thumb:, but unfortunately, will not be make it to your Ouray event this year.  Maybe in the future? Ouray is lovely in September...
