Earlier the year I bought a Racebike Chassis and tank that was built by Andy Sidlow from the UK in the late '80's. It was raced for the '87 or '88 season before it was retired in favor of a spine frame. It was an impulse buy.

I have a bunch of leftover parts from the LeMans SE racebike restoration/build and am going to use them up here.
The frame had been altered from the original build and I will be putting it back.

Will be installing a Lemans 1000 motor that already has a cam, but no heads. I have a bare set of big valve heads and am deciding where to send them. I'm not concerned with streetability, as I have other bikes that fit that bill.

It is an interesting way they have mounted the rear shock. Right on the middle of a piece of tube.

I don't know if it was successful. probably not. They did switch to a spineframe later. It was designed with quick drivetrain swaps in mind?

Al, the fellow I bought the V11S from was the original owner. He purchased it as a new leftover 2004 the summer of 2009 from Rose Farm Classics and had it shipped to New Jersey. Al had known Eraldo Ferrraci for many years, since the Fast By Ferracci shop had opened not far from his house. Al promptly brought the bike to FBF and Eraldo performed a few of the usual modifications - the front crossover was eliminated, de-cat, slip ons and "race" ECU. I must say this is one strong V11S!!!

That is the original SE Block. I bought a set of bare big valve heads years ago. Heads will be reworked. According to Lance Baker, that engine has a cam he got from John Wittner, so I'd guess it's a Norris RR3. Should go pretty good.
Huzo, I disagree. Your project is a much more Herculean effort. ( I'm looking forward to seeing it) We all know what an MGS-01 is so there will be expectations right or wrong.
I have free reign to do whatever i want. I could paint this thing pink with purple bathtub flowers and install a banana seat and ape hangers and there would be no nits to pick.

Fascinating. What provenance do you have to positively track it back to Sidlow? The brazing certainly looks like his trademark work, but the stuff around the swing arm pivot is not brazed. I see you have a different swing arm to that in the first pic which shows a floating FD.
Regardless, it is an interesting frame and I will follow with interest, good work so far.

I'm not disputing it for a moment, in fact I think its a cool project & I would like to follow it. I met Andy when he passed through NZ a few years ago, he stood in my workshop and gave me great advice regarding mt replica Egli Vincent frame. By all accounts, he made more than a few, & I have seen one which arrived here about that time. We were surrounded by Guzzis in my shop but I dont recall Andy mentioning that he had ever had involvement with a Guzzi frame for anyone, but then we were engrossed in Egli talk at the time. :laugh:

I didn't take it that way at all. I had no clue who he was until after I bought it. As far as I'm concerned, it is a weird one off race bike frame campaigned by Raceco UK. for a short time. I still don't know much about him, there is not a lot of info about him on the net. I'd love his E-mail to send him a picture when it's done. You wouldn't happen to have that, would you? :grin:

Yes, he is very elusive. It took a considerable amount of time & effort to track him down 7 or 8 years ago. Then he passed through NZ and returned to the UK and disappeared again. I havent heard of him since. He chooses to live in the shadows.

At a point in the bikes history, the frame was modified poorly. The Original frame was made from thin wall T45 steel tubing. All the recent stuff is being cut away and tossed. Everything will be put back as originally intended with Chrome moly 4130 tubing. My Buddy Tom Hull is on the job!

I'm lucky. My buddy Tom Hull ( local euro bike fixer ) really likes fabricating and the creative process. He saw the two distinct types of welding and said that shit has to go before I had a chance to open my pie hole. I'm more of the vision / parts accumulator. My last project and a lot of these parts came from his Dad who was THE guzzi dealer here in phoenix up until about '97 .

I like the work on the triples, As you may recall, I've had my eyes on those for a while now, so I like to keep track of them - I want them now even more than before :-)
Which fork/fork tubes do you plan on using? Are there ones like the LM1000, but shorter?

Good to see progress. I was informed recently that T45 tube is European mm sizes, have you procured 25mm? (or was I given duff gen?) It will be great to see it repaired with the same material that Mr Sidlow used to build it.

under the seat hump is one possibility, and building a box for the electronics under the tank is another. I'm leaning towards the seat. That's where it originally lived.

Gotta ask about potential exhaust heat vs fuel/gas tank issues. Will there be any heat shield, baffle, exhaust wrap, ?

Not an issue. The gas tank is miles away. There is not much choice if I want equal length head pipes. The frame wants what it wants. My buddy Tom Hull loves making exhaust systems.

Slow going with life getting in the way but work has resumed. The back half of the frame was butchered by someone who should never have been allowed near a welder. Why you would weld crap seamed thick steel tube to lightweight T45 is beyond me.
We studied what pictures we had, took measurements, and my buddy Tom Hull is doing his magic. The whole frame will be BS T45 steel tubing again. Some liberties are being taken as we do not have the original swingarm. The swing arm is a nice piece, don't know who built that.

I like the fairing pics. I have no idea how the hydro blasted surface may show straw like polished ss does (?). That might look kind of cool, if it would color and look kind of like the matte blue finish on Britten exhaust.
All I can say is polishing is the gift that keeps on giving.. and taking… and giving…

engine torn down and mocked up for blueprinting. The engine was a stock lemans 1000 with original B10 cam. Timing gears are the only bonus. Other than a little dirt that got in the motor, it looked like new. Almost a shame to tear it down.

Crankshaft is back from balancing. Marine Crankshaft inspected, magnafluxed, dynamic balanced the crank and micro polished the journals. $240.00 with one way shipping back home. I had wanted more exotic work, but Marine Crankshaft wasn't on board with going nuts. I can appreciate being told why and when I'm wrong, especially when it saves money. I have a windage tray/sloppage plate going in too.

They drilled the hell out of the weights. What % overbalance did they set it to?

I have no idea to be honest. sent them everything and told them what I was after and a wishlist including knife edging, polishing etc. Marine Crankshaft poo-pooed most of my ideas and only did what they though was needed. Probably saved me a good chunk of change too.
The crank still heavy. 20 lightening holes is like scraping a few cubes off of an iceberg.

If you add up all of the weights you get 1421 grams. Multiply that by 52% (a common balance factor for Guzzi engines) and you get 738.92 which is close to the 743.6 bob weight used. 52.3% gets you even closer - 743.18.

Engine is starting to go together. Here are pics of the Trankontinental clutch/flywheel assembly. The entire set up weighs 7.54 lbs.
If you look down into the motor, you can see the aluminum windage tray and the filter poking through it. Tom Hull machined an additional hole into the rear left side of the windage tray to ensure all of the oil drains back into the pan and doesn't pool on top when the bike is parked.

The engine is together. Squish is set at 44 thou, it may tighten up a tiny bit after it's gone through a few heat cycles and re-torqued. Piston and valve clearance is a none issue. I went with the mystery cam that came with the pile of parts I bought 10 years ago. It has slightly less lift than a P3 with a ton of duration. It should rev like a two stroke ( I'm hoping)

Shorten the clip-ons. I'm taking 2 inches off of each bar.
Then break in. I'm optimistically hoping for 80- 90 rear wheel ponies. It feels extremely light. I'm guessing 450 lbs. with a full tank.

flipped the tarrozzi clip-ons to bring them closer and shortened the bars on each side. The narrow tank makes the wide bars look wider than they are. The fork angle sits at 23.5 degrees. The leverage is needed. Installed lemans bar ends and one bar end mirror to keep things legal.

Had my first test ride tonight. The bike feels very tall, even though it uses lemans 1000 forks and triples. Handling is alien and unguzzi like, part of that is the 23.5 degrees of rake and 3 inches of trail, and the rest may be due to the lack of weight. (I'm looking for a scale, will report back).
On the highway the motor is eerily smooth, almost like an 850. Not much engine braking to speak of. I won't be taking it past 6000 rpm for the first 1000 miles. After that, I'll give her the beans. It should make power to 9k. (I can hope). So far so good.

I have some work to do.
The forks bottomed out and locked up. No movement. Didn't hit anything harder than a speed bump and the rolled curb at my driveway. everything was new, weird.
The transkontinental clutch needs adjustment/help. The bike walks forward with the lever pulled in. It also slips when you give it a handful of throttle and then catches. It may also need a shorter clutch arm.
*forks fixed.
Transcontinental clutch does not disengage after the bike is warm. may have to go with something more conventional.
*Longer screw has been placed in the clutch arm for more leverage. Tip from A.G.

One cylinder quit firing. Dyna ignition took a crap. lucky, I had a spare. It's mounted in the electronics box. I wonder if the box Dyna needs to be in the breeze.

Yes, the Dyna box needs to be located somewhere in the air stream to keep it cool.
