RIP John Prine (update online tribute 2020 June 12-14)
« on: March 29, 2020, 10:46:36 PM »
I know that there are quite a few John Prine fanatics here, so I thought it best to let you all know that he could use our thoughts and prayers.

I just learned that John fell ill with CV19 symptoms on Thursday 26 March, and has been intubated and in critical care for a couple of days now.

He's overcome some major challenges in the past, I hope he can pull through this one.

National treasure and one of my longtime heroes.  Watched a large part of his Sessions at West 54th Street on YouTube last night, got choked up about 15 times.  Hope he can pull through.  The guy has endured divorce, cancer, and far too many early Dylan comparisons.  Dylan, btw, is a giant Prine fan.

Kasey Musgrave lead in to John at Red Rock singing...Burn One With John Prine. We were backstage during John's last 20 minutes or so of his performance. Night to never forget. Hope he pulls through.

Back in the day, Rolling Stone told me about this guy that might be the new Dylan. I went out and bought his first record.. but he was a little too "country" for me. Over the years, he became one of my favorite poets.

Not to deny John's birthright and obvious love of his homeland, but he is truly a treasure of the world.

I first saw him on tv in the early 70's, I believe it was on the West 54th St sessions you mention.

He performed 2 songs that night, "Sam Stone" and "Everybody", complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

     "Sam Stone" was such a hard hitting song on the true tragedy of war, and yet "Everybody" was such a lighthearted whimsical tune about religion and faith;

I was amazed that this young man was able to paint such vivid pictures with such simple words.

I believe that was John's true gift, he could tackle such challenging topics and issues in such a way it was always thought provoking but never offensive.

There's a lesser known tune of his, "Blue Umbrella", that I usually play every few years, whenever something needs grieving; there's a line in that song that is so appropriate, especially in these crazy times.

Tks for sharing that Chuck, I can't believe that I've been a rabid fan for almost half a century, and am still discovering gems of his that I wasn't really familiar with.

"All  the Way With You"  What a beautiful little tune.

It shows how deeply Prine’s music touched many of us when I realize that after almost 50 years, I can still remember all of the lyrics to “Sam Stone.”

Well, it *is* a memorable song, and explained drug addiction in an understandable way.

Wasn't familiar with the song, but just listened to it on Youtube. Nice.

Hope John makes it.

Hope you ALL make it. This thing is insidious.

I found John Prine  when I was in my twenties. I was in the last stages of a divorce from my first wife. I picked up his album that included the song "Far From Me". At that point I was a fan forever. Hope he can stay with us for a bit longer.

Way back in 1972 I was in college at SIU Carbondale,my roommate was a music major, guitarist and he turned me on to John Prine! Just last week on my google news I read where they shut down Paradise, the coal burner power plant, down in Muhlenberg county where paradise lay,I’m sorry my son but your too late in asking,Mr Peabody’s coal train has hauled it away...This had special resonance for me,I was a Boiler maker apprentice on a new coal burner in my home town in 1977, they just pulled the plug on it a month ago...

I just happened to be particularly acquainted with that one; lord knows I've done my share of "misheard lyrics" of which you can look up thousands on-line.

Before you could do that, I think my longest running one was from Creedence's "Willie and the Poor Boys" "Down on the Corner", where I heard

Down on the corner
Out in the street
Willy and the Poor Boys are playin'
Bring a nickel, tap your feet

as

Down on the corner
Out in the street
Willy and the Poor Boys are playin'
Playing a guitar, can't be beat

My boys admitted to me not long ago that they had always heard "Owner of a Lonely Heart" by "Yes" as

"Molerab the Hungry Horse".   Never made much sense to them in the context, though ... !

There is a really bad hair band song by a really bad hair band that even after someone showed me the lyrics is still heard as

                                                                                   "welcome to the omni" .

You can guess what the song is .
