Tasmania trip .... Speeding fine in the Mail, a good one !
« on: December 23, 2014, 01:13:46 PM »
This will be the first time I haven't lounged around opening presents and eating all day.  But I think an Upside is I'll, be on Griso heading south, (as Maxwell Smart would say) Annnnnnnnd Loving It  :D       2nd upside, we might be cheating and opening Santa's things today.
It will take my arthritic bones 2 days to Sydney, 1458 km, 2 more to Melbourne, about 1000 km, overnight on the Ferry, the "Spirit of Tasmania", then the holiday can begin.
I'm torn between feeling a little sad I won't be with family for Xmas and the excitement of a long road trip.
Griso is nearly all packed, when it gets light enough to take a photo I'll pin it up, and photos on the way too. :bike
A steady trip as the police have Double the normal speeding and traffic infringement Fines until January 4th  :+=copcar
Maybe they'll eat there donuts at home on Xmas day ?

Where are you staying in between Sydney and Melbourne? We'll be down at our beach house just South of Narooma. If you'd like a bed there for the night gimme a call or PM me.

I'm a tad envious actually. I'd love to visit Tasmania.

Meanwhile, I've just discovered that I should have fitted the crash bar before the leg shields!  Damn! Should have seen that.

Saw this one at Goulburn NSW. It looked like it still has the original owner. Still registered and used regularly.

Bikes all secured on the 'Spirit of Tasmania'. Side stand down, bike in gear, soft padded cuffs go over the grips , strap between them and down to hard points on the deck. Some people were a little worried but not me  ::) They were very professional and careful, talked to each owner before tying down.
Many Thanks to Kurt ( Tazturtle ) and friends who took the time to show us around first day here. They have these bendy things on the roads here, Corners ? I found it hard to keep up with Kurt as he rides well , and sorry to James on the Stelvio, I'm sure I was holding him up when I was wheeling Griso through some of the windy bits  :D

Folks we have someone famous in our midst. Our Tazturtle is somewhere along the line of skiers in this pic

Visited 'Strahan Seaplanes and Helicopters' , business part of the trip done , exchanged caps, talked about planes, maintenance and mutual industry friends. He has a couple of C185 F's for sale.

My first time on the Spirit of Tassie was not a good experience. I was on the LeMans which didn't have a side stand which they weren't happy with. They needed to swing the rear end around a bit and used the tail light as the lift point, which ended in tears. They ended up putting the tie down strap over the seat which at the time seemed ok but two days later in Queenstown when I lifted the bike on the centre stand it collapsed. Lucky for me there was a mechanic on duty at the local servo who was happy to weld it back together for me, at no charge.

On a brighter note the Spirit did pay for a new tail light lense and gave me a free bar tab for the night.

Tasmanians love bike riders because thousands per year spend thousands each and it's a major source of income for the state and in my two visits  I have never seen any kind of highway patrol presence. This was recently confirmed during a conversation with a rider who had recently toured the state when he had a friendly talk with a duo of officers who said if they see you having a bit of fun they will turn a blind eye. If they see you again they will issue a warning  ;-T

I'll be back there in 2016.

Any Guzzi riders looking to tour in Tassie, feel free to give me a hoy.

We live only 15 mins from where the Spirit of Tasmania docks and always happy to have a ride.

There are many, many great roads, many of which the locals know and the bike magazines seldom mention.

Stay away from the major highways and the Police presence is light to non-existent. Mind you, the speed limit is plenty in the tight stuff till you learn them.

Was great to ride with you this week Ron. Love that Griso.

We found this little fellow foraging for ants in one of the parks. One of our group was Chastised for touching him. It's an "Echidna" about 1 ft long,

I recognised this one from a distance among a group of other bikes. The proud owner standing guard to keep sticky fingers away. They have sold for over 100 K here in Aus. I have only just noticed the art work on the helmet  ;-T

That Echidna must be used to people if one of you could get close. They're  normally quite skittish. Not that quick though....

I managed to save one that was plodding across the Princes Highway down near Bega a couple of days ago. Dumb wee bugger obviously never got given a copy of the road rules when he was in the pouch. Luckily I was able to stop, duck across the road and pick him up and he didn't manage to get a grip on the pavement! Glad I had stout gloves on! ;D

OK, I just asked my daughter and it seems that my assumption was entirely wrong. I was expecting both sexes to simply have a cloaca but no. Echidnas have, to quote Erika, "The weirdest looking penis you've ever seen." Probably most folks here aren't interested enough in the odd reproductive proclivities of monotremes so I won't bother finding a pic but I'm sure Google will be your friend if you're interested. Having a daughter who is an environmental biologist comes in handy sometimes if you're hunting weird facts!  :D

Yes but the eggs hatch and then they live in the pouch. The females don't have nipples, just small areas in the pouch that secrete a sort of 'Proto-Milk'.
