forum newly blocked at work...change?
« on: January 12, 2015, 06:27:47 PM »
Admin, members:

WG forum is newly blocked from my work PC.  Message is : "parked domain".  IT recently "upgraded" security, etc.
Any idea what is causing the red flag please?  I would ask IT for an "exception" but the oil price crash gives pause since there is a new normal?

Does anyone else have a blocked access from a work location?

thanks,
Lucydad

Terrorist based threat over the internet?

But I would think Italian flavor would be OK.

OK -- end of potential political thoughts.

My work also blocks some sites to limit surfing (but thankfully, WG comes through loud and clear).

The stupidest thing is that IT doesn't block ads or pop-ups - when I'm killing time, I want to do so as efficiently as possible and ads just make pages load slower!

Not sure if you really want to ask IT to unblock a site though...

You'd have to give IT a good business-related reason to unblock a site.   They are always adding to the "blocked sites" lists, if they find that there's no possible work-related reason to use it.

It's pretty uneven, usually.   Surprising what sites you can get to, and which ones you can't.

A lot of the business networks I support have a parallel gateway to the internet that does not connect to the company network.  It's there to support personal computer use v company network and allows a personal computer to bypass some blocks and other company-related security.  You might ask IT if there is something like that available to use.  Be honest about why.

Since the events of the last few months involving hacking and especially involving insider network security breaches many companies are getting brutal about network security.  If a site is blocked and you go to IT asking for a workaround it's going to put you under scrutiny.  You need to ask yourself if it's worth it to do personal business over the company network.  Personally, if I was in charge of a network, was given the mandate to secure the ratsnot out of it and then someone came by asking for an exception for non-business access, I'd suggest that his supervisor sort it out with mine and that we move forward with what they decide.  An IT admin is simply NOT going to risk his network and career to do someone a personal favor.  Compounding this attitude is the chance that the company has a 'secret shopper' on the payroll with orders to try compromising an admin.  So move delicately.

Exactly the same problem here  :(

You don't work for the same company I do by any chance?

Was WG now a joint venture with Siemens called EE. If you do work for the same company then you'll know what the initials stand for!!

My work too. I assume they all use filters which subscribe to  lists which is updated by a third party.

Once the website is categorized it will either be blocked, or allowed by the filter. I doubt your local IT had anything to do with it, maybe those of us affected are using Cisco Cloud Web Security/Scansafe?

Such events can be triggered by an update in anti viral software. I had to ask my IT guy to unblock the word "guns", since at the time I was shopping for a pistol for my wife.

Your issue is probably based on the word "italian"  ;D

How much does your employer pay you to watch motoguzzi porn?

Since he has blocked it so you cannot watch, you should ask for a raise as compensation.

Surf on your phone, but not in Houston traffic, especially not in Houston traffic while on your bike.   I know bosses are against surfing at work, although many do it themselves.  IMHO, surfing the net during a specified break or during lunch should be accepted.   In a stressful job situation looking at motorcycles is relaxing as is planning your next vacation, or looking at real estate in Panama.  Less expensive than using Company dollars for counseling or blood pressure medication.  Bottom line  it's the Company's equipment so they have every right to determine how it may be used.

Thanks for comments.  Yes indeed IT has cranked up security.  No real surprise.  My last company was hacked by the Ch+++, and after they stole everything they screwed up my PC and others and we lost a lot of work.  Previous company both C+++ and R+++ hacked us, and L+++ tried everything also.  Both companies had employees do it, inside jobs.

Guess no more Guzzi porn at work other than you tube, etc.

Good news is Thursday the sun is supposed to come out and temps warm up in Houston and Friday is a day off.  I envision a lot of V7R miles this coming 3 day weekend.  Best I can figure we have had about ten inches of rain the past month, and maybe two days with any sunshine.  Spring comes in February though.

Other good news is I remembered to throw the three bags of poodle poop out of my jacket pocket and put them in the trash.  Hate it when I forget.

I use my cell phone for all non work related surfing.
Many companies track internet usage.   Ours even tells us this in a message that we see every time we log in.

I don't want to give 'em a reason to pick me at the next layoff, so, I avoid non-work related surfing over the company network, other than during my lunch break.

Nothing I've done.  I'd say your work has caught up with you.  A lot of IT security team members for their companies do random audits on websites being visited, how much time was spent on them, content of the site, etc and make a judgement call on whether to block it or not.

When I worked for a large corporation, they had this site blocked after a while too.  I guess I spent too much time on it to their liking.  For some dumb reason, it's categorized as a "shopping site".  Don't know why.

While working for the Navy, in weapons development, I could not look up "bombs".

We had to get the new net filter folks to use some sense.

We weren't terrorists.  One size didn't fit all.

1) your company may have noticed the wildguzzi traffic. be glad they didn't can you.
2) learn what a proxy is...

Our company firewall blocks all known public proxies.
Private ones however......

If you're tech savy, have a Linux or Mac OS X computer, and can use ssh through your firewall, then you can run your own SOCKS proxy on top of an SSH connection.
If you're a Windows user, you could run a Linux virtual machine on VMWare to handle the SSH proxy.

Check out FoxyProxy for Firefox.   You can define rules that select a proxy server (or direct connection) for specified hosts.
For example, use the company defaults for most traffic, and then your private proxy for wildguzzi, advrider, etc.
