Thanks, that was inspirational. A few years ago while still in college my son worked as a salesman at Malcolm Smiths dealership and sold a new R1 to an 80 year old.  Hell yes.

ChuckH, or Ralph, you boys step right up here and see this 75-year-old youngster off ....  :D, or we'll sic JN Smyth on him to tell tales of the old days!

Great story, though; he talks about the friends he lost on road races over the years   :( , I'm sure he feels that he's been really lucky over that period to still be here and still be hammering his bikes up and down those roads.  ;-T

After seeing that, everyone should want a Moto Morini with clip-ons now!

I've also had an older guy in his 70's come by the store where I worked. Traded in his KTM RC8 because it had gotten a bit to hard on his body. Drove off with a BMW K1300s.

Next to that with a sidecar tour we always had some old germans come along who were also well into their 70's and 80's. One of them needed help getting around but on his bike he was king...

Cross your fingers and hope you're one of the lucky ones  :bike

I loved his comment "The lust for racing is the same as when I was twenty.  More or less." (with a smile)
Miss my 3 1/2 which didn't, by the way, start as easily as his; then again, maybe it's technique I didn't have.

OK- so a warning first that this post could contain philisophical content.

What makes this guy so cool is because he is the antithesis of hipster. Unlike a young man who is still trying to find himself and who in so doing may adopt certain affectations, our hero here IS that guy. He DID race against Ago. He DID wrench on his own bikes and ride them to the race. He still rides them on the same runs. He is so inherently the sh*t that he can afford to be humble and self effacing.  In my mind, the true essence of cool here leads back to Popeye's great contribution to this debate: "I y'am who I y'am and that's all that I y'am."  This man had a self awareness early on and pursued his passion. By the looks of it, he pretty much got it in a headlock and wrestled it to the mat.  My thought is that this is NOT a "bucket list" type of thing. Plenty of people feel that they must go out and experience certain things- that's all well and good. Certainly, the wealthy will always win that competition. However, what we're talking here is a state of being.  I have no doubt that Bhuddists would be right there to agree that this man has lived his life with a rare honesty. In fact, I can see the Dalai Lama jumping on a scooter and following him up those hills.

Our shop sold the new Honda V45 Magna to a 70+ year old retired railroad guy. Walked a bit stiffly, but tall, handsome, looked more like his 60's than 70's. His wife on the other hand was your typical little old white haired lady.

Come late winter he would start riding that thing all over northern Wisconsin. No fairing. No modern clothes (he dis have a leather jacket). The first year I think he had to hide the bike from his wife.

We had some folks that would brighten up the shop when they came in; he was one of them. If someone told me he was still alive I'd believe it. :) Kinda hope he is.

Wow ! you nailed .

In the 60's/70's Italy fortunately or unfortunately was a poorer Country than now and ppl were prone to be different , more passionate , friendly , humble ...and well maybe also more genuine and maybe also a little bit more "ignorant" ( in a good way ).
I met a few men like this one , i could listen them talking about their/our passion all day long.
I really admire them , they are my real Heroes.

My half sister's husband quit riding at 72. She told me that he was getting old.  ;) I asked him if he quit riding because he got old, or got old because he quit riding?  ~; He said, "You know, I *don't* know, but I just didn't feel like I was in control any more." Good enough. Just the same, he wouldn't give up his Lead Wing. I'll down size to a Whizzer if it keeps me on two wheels...  :D

Lannis

Some of us have wanted a Morini 350 since the middle 70's but all we could afford was a Honda 400F - with clip-ons and rearsets, of course.

I wonder what it would take to import one from England.  It's one of the items on my "pail' list - I have a really small bucket.

I *have* watched my diet. EVOO is our main fat, and beer scrubs the other stuff out of our arteries.  ;D  Sometimes drugs *are* the only answer.  ;D I'm genetically predisposed to high cholesterol, and take Lipitor. Dave the doc says I could be the poster child for that stuff. I lost 25 lbs a couple of years ago by watching carbs, and my cholesterol and blood pressure went down.
You know the saying that if I knew how long I was going to live I'd have taken better care of myself?  ;) Naa, I probably wouldn't have. I've lived a little too close to the edge a few times.  ;D

I've started using that wherever I can.   Doesn't do much in bread or high-temperature frying, but for most other uses it's good stuff!

Well, you have to eat SOME carbs or your body falls apart.   A low-carb diet will have 30% of your daily calories coming from carbs, which (if you're eating a low 2000 calories per day), means that 600 calories of your daily diet will be carbs.

Some days, it's worth it to me for most of my carbs to come from a big chunk of fresh, warm, whole-wheat bread with a bit of olive oil.   Matter of fact, my neighbor just last week brought me a couple pounds of home-ground whole-wheat flour (they are some real back-to-the-landers) and being a good locavore, I'm letting a batch of bread rise now ....  !
