It's Cold Today *NGC*
« on: February 13, 2015, 04:14:14 PM »
It’s Cold Today

Today is trash day, so I just put my trash out. Since I was outside, I shoveled off the 2 inches of snow that fell last night on my deck and back stairs. I was outside for maybe ten minutes tops and I can honestly say that one degree Fahrenheit (-17 Celsius) is freakin’ cold to me. And it’s supposed to get a lot colder this weekend along with another foot of snow. I really do hate winter; but you already know that.

The trouble with being snowbound or coldbound or whatever you want to call it is that I start to run out of things to keep myself occupied. I can only play computer games for so long before they get really old. TV mostly sucks. There are three shows that I watch fairly regularly, but that’s it other than the Weather. I watch the Weather Report most evenings, but I try to time it so I don’t have to watch the News. When I watch the News, I get either pissed off or depressed. Plus, I think that all the news reporting is pretty slanted. “Control the information and you control the people”. I’m not a big Conspiracy Theorist, but I really don’t trust everything that’s presented on TV as news.

I’m tired of all the movies in my personal library. I’ve watched them all more times than I care to admit. You know, it’s kind of funny. Sometimes, a TV channel will show a movie that’s in my Library and I’ll watch it; even though it’s been cut and I have to put up with commercials.

Hey; Good News! I just looked and the Outside Temperature is up to three degrees F (-16C)! The forecast says that it’s going to make it all the way up to 11 F (-12C).

Yesterday, I made an offer on the bike I want from Guido. I hope he takes it.  It would be a win-win for both of us. If he decides not to, I have a couple of other irons in the fire.  The salesman from High Octane Harley in Billerica is pretty aggressively chasing my business. I made the mistake of looking online at a new Sportster 1200 T that’s pretty much set up the way I want, and clicking the button for more information last Sunday night. I’ve gotten three calls and two e-mails in the past few days saying he wants to get me “into a new bike in that Superior Blue that you like” I don’t really want to go in hock for the 60 or 72 months it would take for me to get affordable payments, but a new bike does have its appeal. Then, there’s Craigslist. There’s an ’06 1200C for short money. I’d have to change the bars (it’s got those stupid Apehangers on it), the exhaust (it’s been wrapped with black heat tape) and change the forward controls for mid controls. But it does have the 4 ½ gallon gas tank, which I like, and it’s painted a semi flat grey color that looks good.  I guess I’ll just wait a couple of days and see how it goes.

Tonight it’s supposed to go down to  five below zero F (-21C); then we’re looking at a foot of snow tomorrow along with a week of low temps near or below zero. La-De-Freakin’-Da.

I’m listening to a couple of Randall Leonard CDs. He’s a New Age pianist that nobody has heard of, but I really enjoy a couple of his albums. It’s very soothing music and it’s become a frequently played item at this time of year. Terri found one of his CDs years ago at the Eliot Church fair, and it kind of grew on us. He’s not as good a pianist as George Winston, but his music doesn’t have that “depressed” air that some of George Winston’s works hint at.

My diet has been going well. I’ve lost 14 pounds since Christmas, If I can just keep doing what I’ve been doing, I’ll be back into my 38 waist blue jeans by the time I hit the road. That’s what I hoping for, anyhow. It’ll be interesting to see how my weight goes once I start traveling. While I suspect I’ll continue to lose weight, I won’t know until I actually get out there.

On a positive note; the days are getting longer. It’s light enough at 6:30 in the morning to be able to distinguish color, and the sun doesn’t go down until 5:15 in the afternoon.

Spring is coming; I just wish it would hurry the f**k up.

George Winston depressed? I don't get that at all. Have you heard his version of the Barf Brooks song "The Dance?"  Way better than Barf's version. Sorry your weather still sucks, we actually had some sunshine in SW Missouri today, but the weekend forecast is el-stinko >:(

Yup, same here.

Had to start the morning with 2... count 'em, two shirts.

Then things got much worse, when it got up to 81 I realized I didn't have a bungee cord to strap the outer shirt to my seat.

Had to wear it the rest of the day and got quite... well, extremely tepid.

Darn, and I was having a pity party here because we will hit 18F tonight.  I guess it's all relative.  There is only so much junk I can stand on Youtube and TV is out of the question.  Somehow the 12 days we had in Hawaii about 3 weeks ago are slim consolation for the present.  Maybe I better focus on Bike Week, that's three weeks in the future.  Daytona can be strange in March, usually two days of frost on the tent in the morning, two days of rain, and two days of glorious sunshine with temps in the 70s.  Go figure!  There is always the temptation to troll for winter deals on a motorcycle...tempta tion, get thee away from me you slut!  Time for an adult beverage.

with all that snow I'd have thought you could loose 50 pounds just shoveling it, 'spose you have a blower?

as far as cold, I just layer up.. a few days ago it was 3 below zero (F) at 8am, me and the dog didn't hesitate to head out on a 2.5 mile walk, off leash she clocks about 5 miles.

I'd gladly take some of your snow, we started off the season with a lot of snowfall but it mostly melted and now we just have a few inches on the ground..it's still cold, -2 to 5 above tomorrow.. we live it here in Minnesota and our nature is to not complain, don'tcha know..

we have not had any ice storms yet this year so looking forward to that.. and then it'll be spring!

I have not had to shovel the roof all winter !

Crusty,

Hang in there buddy.

Hope you get the HD of your dreams.

If I had a magic wand I would poof you here in Sugar Land.  We have an empty bedroom upstairs, two poodles to keep you warm, and sunshine, blooming flowers, warm temps (74F today), and I would even grill you a steak and pour you some of the good stuff.

I remember winter from CO, WY, AK and UT.

Blizzard warnings in effect for the weekend, another 24 inches expected for us on the Maine coast. Took my dog for a walk this morning across the frozen casco bay. Looks like Antarctica , kind of cool as it hasn't froze over like this since I was a kid. I hope people got there roofs shoveled off before we get dumped on again.

"Cold" is relative.  Yesterday, in Oceanside it was 84.  Today about 6 degrees "colder".  No expressions of sympathy, please.  I'm tough, can handle it.

The wind woke me up; it's really blowing hard. The current temperature is -7 and the wind chill is supposed to be somewhere close to -50 by morning according to the weather forecast on channel 5. This is the frosting on the cake; the cake being the 14 inches of snow we got yesterday. It could be worse; the coast got 22 inches yesterday. There are two more snow storms in the forecast, Tuesday and next Sunday. The weatherman said that Sunday's snow could be a "significant" storm.
Oh, Rapture.

S'not bad here, occasional windy days that knock out power now and then but I haven't had to shovel the roof yet.
On the other hand a pretty girl is coming tomorrow to do my house work and help keep the jungle at bay outside.
Life is so tough here on this rock.  I mean, it is mid winter you know with the coldest days yet to come.
The bitterly cold days usually occur from end of Feb. to end of march when night time temps can get way down
  even into the 50s.

-10F this morning, bright and sunny. Last night the wind was bad, maybe 40-50 mph gusts.  In the middle of the night I thought "just get to the morning without the darn power going off and dig out to the generator in the morning like you should have done yesterday."  With the temp and wind, pipes freeze quick.  So a very grateful awakening this morning - firing up the Honda for some snow blowing fun.

Crap.  It was nearly 80 on Saturday.  Sunday night was thunder sleet and an inch on snow over that.  22 degrees now with a projected high of 31.  I planted grass seed last week.

This is BS! It's hard to believe that just a week ago Saturday it was a beautiful 60 degrees F and we took a nice long ride in N KY. The Alberta clippers are lined up and ready to blast us for the next week or two. Hey Alberta! What you got against us down here!?

BTW,

Crusty,

My father's hometown was Fitchburg; I visited there many times as a kid, but didn't remember much about it. For the sake of learning more about family history, my wife and I rode through there a few years back.

Its been a really weird winter here on the coast of BC . Very mild temps , we really haven't had winter . The ski hill shut down and the cherry trees are blooming in Vancouver which shouldn't happen until April ! I insured the old girl last week and got my first seniors discount . Plus 14 degrees C on Saturday , Sunday and sunny so out both days on the bike . It should be raining like hell here and be around 5 to 8 degrees with the constant threat of snow but no way . It's actually quite unnerving and keep waiting for a 3 ft dump of snow or maybe the big one which could mean this whole island will sink into the Pacific . Strange times as to weather for sure . The forecast is for more sun and warmer temps into next week . I feel for you as I grew up in the Niagara Region in Ontario . My sister lives in St Catharines and its been like the north pole there for damn near 3 months . They haven't had a day above zero for over a month which is highly unusual . Keep the fires burning and hopefully you guys will turn the corner soon .  ;)
