Guzzi calls for SG oil. More precisely, the owners manual for my 2012 Stelvio NTX says "USE HIGH-QUALITY 10W - 60 OIL."
SAE 10W - 60. As an alternative to recommended fluids, use top branded oils with performances that meet or exceed the requirements of CCMC G-4 API. SG
specifications
.

So, before I started using Castrol Edge 10w60 SJ/CF, I decided to look up the classifications of this oil to ensure it would be ok to use in my bike.  Based on the below information, I don't really see anything special with SG oil, since it has been in basically every oil since 1989.  It would appear to me that SJ meets and far exceeds SG classification.

"S" – SPARK IGNITION (Gasoline, Propane, CNG)
SG = Service typical of gasoline engines beginning with the 1989 model year.
SJ = 1997 SJ may be used where API Service Classifications SH.
SH = 1994 provides improved control of engine deposits, oxidation and engine wear relative to oils developed for previous categories.

Further confirmation from my dealer was enough to seal the deal.  I have always used Castrol in my bikes, and like stated by others, I can simply go to my BMW dealer and $12 per quart later, have all the oil I need.

Thanks Luap, I was sure I researched the Castrol thing 4-5 years ago before deciding to use it. I will continue to use it. Stay safe, John

Sometime back, I received this reply from Caludio Pucci after I emailed him:

Please call 724-352- 4451 and they should be able to ship the oil to the address you provide.  If you have any problems or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me back.

Thanks again!

I am way more conversant in olive oil than motor oil.   ::)

But I, too, read the literature to say that SJ took in SG.  SL seems to have done the same with SJ, as it "[t]hey may be used where API Service Category SJ and earlier categories are recommended.”  See http://www.oilspecifications.org/api_eolcs.php.

Liqui Moly is rated as API SL/CF.

I understand personal preferences for the oil equivalents of Ford, Chevy, and Citroen ... and I can still smell in "my mind's nose  :D" my 1965 Yamaha Trail 80's Castrol-caused intoxicating scent.    :bike

Yet, from an objective POV, Liqui Moly 10W-60, at $41.64 for 5L (i.e., $8 and pennies a liter), delivered, would seem an extraordinary deal, http://tinyurl.com/Norge-Engine-Oil.

Maybe I am missing something fundamental.  Won't be the first time.   ;)

Enough.  Time to have some grappa with an espresso.  Lent arrives momentarily and I have to load up for The Long Dry.  :'(

I went on Napa's website.  Then called my local store.   They didn't have it, quoted a higher price.  I told them the web site
has it cheaper, they honored that price and ordered a case but I only bought what I needed.  They're holding the rest
of the oil for when I need it.   Can't beat that service.

Gosh darned oil threads.....

So there's Liquid Moly:

http://tinyurl.com/jw2p2mg

Then there's Liqui Moly for our machines, well.....perhaps closer to the mark for MG calling for 4T racing oil:

http://tinyurl.com/kpbyd2e

And note the prices compared to the ENI posted earlier/above.

I'm sticking with ENI......

I recently received a notification from Amsoil that they now have a 10w-60 "Dirtbike Oil".  Contacted them about the dirtbike reference and if this oil is recommended for my 1200 Sport.  Response was affirmative though dirtbike reference was the oil was formulated for dirtbikes with wet clutches.

I haven't used it yet so no experience thus far.

I am seriously offended.  Watch out for a man with a violin case at your door.   ;D

No, actually, this is interesting, and, in several respects, more helpful to me than the other dreaded oil thread going on just now.

Was not aware of your second oil, above, i.e., the "Liqui Moly for our machines, well.....perhaps closer to the mark for MG calling for 4T racing oil" http://tinyurl.com/kpbyd2e

Would have ordered that, I think, tho still think that the SL rating of the first -- http://tinyurl.com/jw2p2mg -- should also meet specs, as it "includes" SG, which is the MG standard.

So, what to do?

I may just use up the "lesser" LM in the Norge -- which, while I do try to ride (as the inimitable Jim Barron puts is) "as intended," I do not think I stress much -- and just change more often, then start using the "better" LM.  I'll order the latter now (and thanks for that), as I think dealing with ENI USA is a PITA.

The Griso?  Still thinking, but I just got some ENI from RFC.

The EV?  Heck, that sweet thing almost overdoses when I change the oil, much less were I to use synthetic.  :D

I have a couple gallons of redline 10W60 full-synthetic that I ordered from here:

http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/product/RedLineMotorOil10W60/Motor_Oils

An offer for anyone interested: I'll sell it for the same price ($51.95/gallon) and I'll ship it to you for FREE!

I have no use for it anymore because my Guzzi was stolen and my other vehicles don't need this viscosity.
