Welcome Back. Could EVERYONE PLEASE read this?
« on: May 31, 2015, 08:15:01 PM »
NOTE:    I know this post is long, but it's all important:

I WILL LEAVE THIS MESSAGE STICKIED FOR A FEW WEEKS SO ALL ACTIVE USERS WILL BE ABLE TO SEE IT, PLUS ILL KEEP YOU UPDATED ON ADDITIONAL PROGRESS.  THEN, WE WILL STICKY THE RALLY ANNOUNCEMENTS, ETC, ONCE EVERYTHING IS RUNNING AT 100% AGAIN.

Hello Everyone.  The MAJOR upgrade has been completed and the board is 97% completed.  Here is what I've been doing the last few weeks, with the help of some developers and other hired helpers.  It was quite a chore to get everything tuned up.  One MILLION posts on this board, lots of places to put them and such.

Upgraded to SMF version 2, from SMF version 1.
o   SMF1 is being phased out soon.  We had no choice anyhow.
Upgraded to latest version of MySQL.
o   The version we had was the latest that would run SMF1.  There were lots of issues with that version causing excessive server processes to run.
Upgraded to latest version of PHP.
Upgraded to new server, which will double the capacity.
o   Unfortunately, this will be another $590 per year, but well worth it.
      o   Donations still welcome  ;-T.
Upgraded to the latest firewall and implemented many new security rules to keep everything smooth.
Created Archives per year.  Moving forward, well probably archive anything over 3 years old and put into these sub-boards.  I'll keep 5 archives on hand, then remove the oldest archive.  So if you find something you want, print it or copy/paste onto your computer.
o   This minimizes the search strings in the main board (General Discussion).  Doing it this way allows faster responses and less chance for database corruptions.
o   These sub-boards will be read only.  You will not be able to reply.  You can still reference that old topic in the General Discussion.
Created "Swap Meet" board.  I will not put the classified section back online. It caused too many problems for me to have any interest in doing it again.  Instead, we will use this Swap Meet board to post For Sale, Trade and Free motorcycle related items.
The Search function is still quirky.  Please refrain from searching.

Some minor things are still not installed and working yet. I already know which ones they are.

I do want you to reply to this message if you see problems though.  Like load times, error messages, etc.  Problems between yourself and other members do not concern me  ;D

Note for those who bought advertising space.  I have extended your ads an additional month.  Some had already expired, and those, I reactivated for 60 days.

Didn't the old board pop up the start of the thread if you moused over the thread title, like a preview without having to click on it?  Most of the other boards I visit have this - it really saves time of clicking back and forth when the title is vague or misleading.

Thanks for the maintenance and upgrade.

You'll notice the search feature has been disabled. This is necessary until we get everything completely lined up.

Not much rest.  We're still not completely out of the woods yet.  The server is still running too many processes for some reason.  We're having a hard time tracking it down too.

Take all the time you need to get it right.  Thanks for your service.

I once upgraded to new OS on UNIX at work, only to find our version of WordPerfect would not work, eeek!  Had to go back from tapes, scary just thinking about loosing everyones stuff.

Another upgrade to new Novell OS at law firm, took all night!  Some key root superuser files had to change the permission manually in order for them to be replaced.  Got back up 30 minutes before everyone started getting in to work.  WHEW!

I was shaking from being hungry and thirsty and lack of sleep.  Took another week to bring in the little stuff, but no one could tell we had moved to another OS!
Congrads on the upgrade!!!

I tried to post an image and found Manage Attachments does not include a facility to upload an image.

Are we currently barred from posting images, or did I look in the wrong place?

Thanks for the new version of SMF.  Your hard work is appreciated.

I haven't had an image uploader option in several years due to the amount of space that images take up.

See the FAQs for how to post images.

I'll not be bringing Tapatalk back online at all. Too many holes in that and it caused about 25% of the problems in the first place.

Looking at the users online and noticed the term "spiders" . Quick definition please for an internet dumbie . Nice job Luap .

  Dusty

Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.  They all use "crawling spiders" to add to their indexes.  That's what helps when you do a google search.

Apparently the phrase "Could EVERYONE PLEASE read this?" doesn't translate well in Guzzinglish.

Although it won't do much good because apparently everyone "isn't reading this", may I suggest that everyone on the list mark today on your calendar, and then go forward 30 days and make another mark, and make a resolution that until then we are NOT to ask Luap "Daddy, are we there yet?  Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" when it comes to some little item of board functionality.

Luap is certainly a patient soul.   I could never do it.   I'd be giving people giant virtual boils or changing their avatar to some gross gay porn picture every time I heard about something that wasn't working .....
