Apparently I have a tiny oil leak
« on: September 07, 2015, 08:45:07 PM »
Resurrected the 1984 Cal II, and yesterday took it out for it's 1st good run, North of 200 miles (getting ready for the Mo-Kan). It appears as tho I have a small leak at the rear engine seal, oil is dripping out of the tiny slot at the bottom of the bell housing. I'm not afraid to ride this thing anywhere, keeping an eye on it, and fix it post season. But I really want to take it to the rally, a 400 mile rounder from here. What are the odds that seal will just go poof and end up on a trailer? Bike sat for a couple of years while I was too busy to get to it. Or is this a one day fix if I find a seal real quick like?

Put a catch can under it and see how much it's actually dripping.  It might be nothing.

Oh, it's not much. I just wondered how fast it might deteriorate.

Carry a little extra oil just in case it's leakage get's to be more. If it has synthetic oil in there put in dino oil.  That could take care of your supposed leak.

Is it motor or gear oil? If its gear oil a jigger of Bar leak transmission might help seal things up until you have time for a proper fix. When this happens to my bikes I also pull the starter and the rubber plug on the right of the transmission and squirt a can of brake cleaner into the bell housing to flush out as much crud as possible. Then take the bike for a ride then part it for the evening over a clean piece of cardboard to see how much its really leaking.

The source of the leak is most likely the crankcase ventilation hose. Replace it and, "Bob's yer uncle."

or if gear lube, push rod seals.. give it the smell test and report back.

As mentioned, first thing to determine if it's motor oil (engine), or gear oil (tranny).

I use Bel Ray gear oil so I have not only the smell test, the Bel Ray is red.

Both tend to drain in the same spot, just coming from different directions.

No, all hoses are in fine shape. I'm pretty sure of the seal leaking. I'm going to give it a real good looking over anyway.

there are no hoses involved with the clutch push rod, it's inside the tranny.

you'd have to be pretty good to fix a rear main seal in a day.. the motor must be split from the tranny.. you can hope it's gear lube, for that you just need to pull the swing arm and do the o-ring fix.

I believe dad was replying to this when he said all hoses are fine.
