Shop Vac
« on: January 27, 2018, 08:45:36 AM »
I need to replace my 20 yo Hitachi shop vac.  I use it almost everyday, and it has been great.  It seems that a lot of the choices out there are definitely cheaped out.  All thoughts from the Guzz tribe are appreciated.

If I owned and used something everyday for 20 years, I'd be picking that brand

Fein. Expensive, but worth it in my opinion.

Rigid (men of few words)

Yeah, I have one. Quiet. Sucks.  I had to wear hearing protection with the old Craftsman that I've dedicated as a bead blast cabinet vacuum.

I have two Ridgids; a big one and a little one. I don't use them daily, but when I do they get a hard workout. The big one is about 16 years old and the small one about 12. Due to breakage and loss, I consolidated the hoses and attachments some time ago. I put an intake muffler on the small one...it cuts the sound a little. I like these because filters and hose kits are readily available locally or online.

My neighbor who doesn't understand how a screw driver works, recently threw out what looked like a brand new ShopVac, so I grabbed it before the scavengers could get their hands on the tool. Cleaned the filter and it works like a charm.

Had a 2.5hp Craftsman for about 20 years and for 10 years of that it had a squeel in the motor but still worked. My wife bought me a 5hp Craftsman for Christmas and it has less suction than the old 2.5hp model.

I have used a Craftsman for 25 years now. Still works great. The one before it used to shock me. I sold it to my Boss at the time. I even told him it was dangerous. He didn't care. Said his wife needed it for their house renovation.

I have bought some of the small shop vacs. Lowes and HF. Both failed after very little use. Once the smokes gets released from their motors, they don't work too good!

I bought a big Craftsman in 1988 when I built my house. It really sucks. So much so that when the motor bearings started screaming I replaced them. Have used some new ones, they don't seem to have the same suck.

I have a 2.5 Craftsman that does duty as a wet vac, dry vac, and evacuation vacuum for the powdercoating booth.  It's been working fine for 20+ years.  My only issue is that it's top heavy.  If I'm dragging it around the floor by the hose it tips over a lot.  Otherwise it sucks like a Hoover.

It seems that Hitachi is disappearing from the tool business.  Craftsmen-waaay to loud, and top heavy.  I want one with quality hose and attachments, solid castors-won't tip over and reasonably quiet.  Lots of cheap stuff out there.

I have this one, but the 4-5 year older version. It's pretty nice I think a quite enough. Found mine at a garage sale for $20 bucks  :thumb:

I've had the same 10 gal Shop Vac at home for the last few years and it works fine, but doesn't get daily use. I also have two Ridgid vacs at my shop that's been going strong for 10 years now.

Fein. Expensive, but worth it in my opinion.

Yes, I got a Fein too.  So much quieter than anything else I've owned or used.  The ability to have it switch on when you turn on a sander is a really nice addition.
