Backlash on a new crown and pinion
« on: April 13, 2018, 09:22:01 AM »
A question on backlash on a loop gearset, i have a perfect pattern on my crown gear with bluing . The pinion has .002 of axial movement but when I check for backlash there is none. The pinion and crown turn over perfectly in the case, with auto and heavy duty vehicles there is a few ways to set up backlash. I am using Stein Dinse gears and they use a method called Klingeinberg Palloid toothing which they claim has parallel high teeth along the entire tooth width. The pattern is perfect and turns over easily but I have never installed a gear set without backlash.  I see that there are some different size shims behind the cover but have heard they are unavailable, any advice would be appreciated.

I use a puller on the ring gear to keep it against the cover then check the blueing like the later manuals state. I think you can still get all the shims. At least I could a few years ago. Pinion shims are the same on all, and if you only need a bit more I use extra gaskets.
When checking all bolts & nuts must be torqued.

What Steve said. Try an extra gasket on the ring gear cover.
If there is no backlash, when the gears heat up you may be too tight.

Thanks guys, I was fairly certain that I needed to get some backlash.

I go the same way as Steve and Wayne. With the earlier gears with smaller teeth set-up is more critical than later sets like the 8/33’s but backlash is a critical factor.
