The Will Rogers Travel Plaza has been closed for months but now back in buisness!

That is just about as exciting as it gets on a December day on the turnpike :D

On a related note, the lights for the ballfield at the 4-way are on. Nobody is there, either. :bike

Yes Sir, That's really bending the fun meter I know ::) Don't know 'bout you all but I'm ready for spring, and some sunshine ;-T

Maybe they are expecting visitors from another Solar system ;D Actually , we are quite proud of our Will , and I appreciate John taking the time to take and post pics . My comment was directed at our highway robbery system in Oklahoma , commonly known as the Oklahoma turnpike authority .

My comment wasn't based on Will Rogers. I never met the guy, but I understand that if I had, he would have liked me.
I was just noticing that the only identifiable figure in any picture was LEAVING, and the parking lot was empty. :D

Never met him either , which isn't so strange when one realizes he died in 1935 ::) I did attend a speech given by Will Junior in the '70's . He said the famous quote was misunderstood , plenty of folks his dad didn't like after he got to know them , just not upon first meeting them ;D Pretty sure he would have still liked you RK even after knowing you for a bit . Will was the largest media star of his day , we could use someone like him now .

Perhaps it looks better in person, but from the pictures, I have to wonder where the millions that were supposedly spent on renovations actually went.
I vaguely remember when it was the "glass House" restaurant, and looked like this:
But most of my memories are of its turn as the world's largest McDonald's:

The current design is not impressing me as an improvement over either of those.

world's biggest McDonalds.........a t one time

I hope management of the new facility continues to allow local high schools to host proms there.
Would be a shame if the old "You might be an Okie if your Senior Prom was held at a McDonalds" bit was no longer true.
-
Wasn there a Howard Johnson over that years ago?

Yes , HoJo was the restaurant chain on all of the Okie turnpikes in the 60's early 70's .

I went to a prom there...another lifetime ago.

Nobody spoke the Truth more often than Will Rogers back in his day!!...Alan

Thinking of Will Rogers, I have to wonder if anyone could ever hit his status again as a universal pundit of American culture and politics. Are we now too divided and jaded for this to happen?
-
How did they fit all three cars on that highway at the same time? Thank heavens we don't have such problems here in the Nor'east.
Happy trails ;D
-
Yes we're happy you nor-easters have all that extra highway space over there. Interstate 44-40 is the road formerly known as Route 66 and you can still drive it without someone on your bumper (most of the time)

I'm just glad it wasn't torn down. Pretty cool throwback to the Golden Age of Motoring.

The highway looked empty too. I avoid toll roads as much as humanly possible and when i saw that this plaza is on a road between Tulsa and St. Louis I know I will never have an occasion to travel on it anyway.
Glad to see that tolls paid for the travel plaza instead of taxes.
-
If I'm not mistaken tolls go to maintaining the turnpike, not the general fund.

I hate toll roads and I live here. But that stretch has no real alternative route that doesn't add many hours to your trip. So if you are on the road from Tulsa to Mizzery border, that's about it.

Thanks for agreeing with me. :thumb:

The busiest McDonalds I know of is the one in Gettysburg in the summer. One of those places where you hear many languages spoken. I strongly recommend do not go there in the summer.
I learned just recently that one of the biggest reasons Pickett's charge failed was that the Union cavalry manning the round top all had Sharps carbines.
-
Unfortunately, tolls are by the axle and a motorcycle has the same number of axles as a car.
I never met a toll I liked.

Howdy RK,
Good to see you haven't fallen prey to some nefarious virus or other calamity.

OOPS,
I uh..travel a lot and when ever I get a chance to check the WG site its sometimes (most times) a brief encounter so I sometimes miss important details..like what the date of the post is.
A thousand pardons...
Will keep moving as it makes for a more difficult target. Otherwise business as usual, civilization is around here somewhere (I'm told).
Thanks for asking John,
I hear spring is near?? for you guys.
:-)
